The social and political context of Hispania in the second half of 7th century was very difficult. San Fructuoso and his ideas were different from the habitual ones. His religious model and his monastic reform are new in the visigoth world. In this work we analyze the foundations of Fructuoso in the Southeastern of the Iberian Peninsula (Vid. Fruct. 14). This work reflects the religious, social and political consequences of the monacato in the reorganization of Iberian society at the end of the antiquity. ; En el marco de un contexto socio-político particularmente difícil, como es el que correspondería a la Hispania visigoda de la segunda mitad del siglo VII d. C., la aparición de una figura como Fructuoso supondría un auténtico tournant no sólo en lo que respecta al modelo religioso que propugna, sino, sobre todo, en el conflicto latente entre el tipo de vida monástica «fructuosiana» y el Estado visigodo, personalizado aquí en la figura del monarca. En este breve trabajo, el episodio referente a las fundaciones monásticas de Fructuoso en el Sureste Peninsular (narrado en la Vit Fruct. 14) nos servirá de hilo conductor para hacer una pequeña reflexión sobre las implicaciones no sólo religiosas, sino, sobre todo, sociales y políticas del monacato como uno de los exponentes del proceso de desestructuración que conduce al 'final de la Antigüedad' en la Península Ibérica.

The main focus of this text will centre around the two peculiar problems: 1. The transition of the territories inhabited by the Serbs from the period of the Byzantine imperial restoration established after the successful wars of Basil II from 1018, into the period of the first twilight of the Byzantine empire from 1180 to 1204; 2. The emergence of the Serbian kingdom and autocephalous Greek-Orthodox church in the fragmented Byzantine world from 1204 to 1220. An examination of the cultural components of these relations, although many of them were of powerful political and ideological significance, has intentionally been omitted from this overview.

This paper analyses the military use of holy relics, images, and other Christian apotropaic devices in the Roman-Persian wars. I examine a wide range of literary evidence from the 4th to the 7th century exploring where, why, and how different Christian objects were used in military contexts. Moreover, I consider different factors, as the local religious practices or the rivalry between the Christian Roman Empire and Zoroastrian Persia. I argue that the earliest military uses of relics and holy images happened in the context of the Roman-Persian conflict and frontier region, and that, during the 4th-7th centuries, these uses were much more common there than anywhere else. Also, that some local practices of this region could have been adopted by military officers and the Imperial elite. I propose that three factors could explain this: First, the intensity of the cult of relics and images in Syria and the Near East. Second, the growing identification of the Roman Empire as a Christian power between the 4th and 7th centuries. Finally, the Roman-Persian conflict and the climate of religious confrontation that grew over the course of the Byzantine-Sassanian wars. ; Este artículo analiza el uso militar de reliquias sagradas, imágenes y otros dispositivos apotropaicos cristianos en las guerras entre romanos y persas. Examino una amplia gama de evidencia literaria del siglo IV al VII explorando dónde, por qué y cómo se usaron diferentes objetos cristianos en contextos militares. Además, considero diferentes factores, como las prácticas religiosas locales o la rivalidad entre el Imperio Romano Cristiano y la Persia Zoroastriana. Abstract
To show how a frontier power of pre-modern South Asia defined its history and identity in different ways in changing political contexts, this article presents an analysis of the unusual asura lineage of three lesser-known dynasties between the seventh and twelfth centuries in succession: the Varmans, the Mlecchas and the Pālas, who sequentially all ruled Kāmarūpa, a historical region located in the present state of Assam. Examination of three distinct phases of genealogical claims enables us to understand the ways in which the peripheral rulers negotiated with dominant supra-regional discourses, challenged political tradition of their predecessors, and carved out their own space in a new world of regional sovereignty.

The concern of this paper is historical: it is an inquiry into aspects of the emergence of accounting in Indonesia. Although the earliest forms and use of money can be traced back to the Moslem (the 7th century) and even the Hindu (the 4th century) periods in Indonesia, little evidence has been found to indicate the early development of record-keeping. It is argued that the early establishment of the Dutch East Indies Company (1609), undoubtedly, is a starting point in the adoption of modern techniques of bookkeeping and that its development has been heavily moulded by the political, social, and economic penetration of Dutch colonialism in Indonesia. The aim of this study is to analyse the images, the representations and idiom of those in power in Cappadocia at the time of the iron age. We hope to demonstrate that the ideology, practices and propaganda of these rulers can be examined and fully understood in a context characterized by both strong permanences from the hittite imperial past and important changes. The study is divided into six parts. The first one deals with the external sources (biblical, Urartian and Assyrian) and reviews the situation in terms of historical geography and geopolitics. The second presents the internal epigraphic and iconographic sources while proposing several new datations. The third section is devoted to a panorama, which we hope to be complete, of the society, the urbanization, the religion and the various rulers of our area. The fourth shows that the images (political and religious iconography) and the phraseology (topical, « royal» anthroponymy, annalistic formulas) used by those in power revolve around three elements : mountain and rock, vine and cereals, fair justice and « good government ». After a fifth part that centers on an examination over a long period of the iconography, the open air rock sanctuaries and the archeology of the cappadocian landscapes, the last section contextualizes our research in different koiné, seen as a meeting point between east and west, producing and absorbing various elements (commercial products, symbols, politcal titles and anthroponyms) and spreading them over the East (Assyria and the neo-hittite, Aramaic, Urartians and Phoenicians) and the West (Phrygia, Lycia, and the Greek and Lydian worlds). ; Ce travail se propose d'analyser les images et les langages des pouvoirs en Cappadoce à l'âge du fer.
