This dissertation explores the implications of borders and boundaries for how forcibly displaced young Georgians from Abkhazia understand issues of belonging and return. My theoretical framework draws from theories on home and belonging as well as theories on border and boundary making, and locates them in geographies of uncertainty – or riskscapes – areas characterized by conflict and/or inequality. Empirical data was collected through two sets of interviews in Zugdidi near the border to Abkhazia and a questionnaire survey in Zugdidi and the capital Tbilisi. These data have been analysed through both qualitative and quantitative methods. The young respondents providing material for this research do not constitute a homogenous group. Some of the respondents have family still living in Abkhazia or even partly grew up in the area; others have never been there. The primary goal of the Georgian government has been that the displaced population should return to their homes, and the government's efforts for local integration has long been insufficient. Since no peace accords have been signed, a lack of security prevents a large-scale return. Notwithstanding increased border controls that have made it difficult to visit former homes, some young people still cross the de facto border. By doing this they contest both the Abkhazian de facto authorities and the border as a symbol of separation and differentiation, while claiming a right to belong in Abkhazia. Property and social relations in Abkhazia contribute to stronger connections and an imperative to return. On the other hand, experience of hardship in contemporary Abkhazia has resulted in some young people not considering return as a viable option. Youth who never visited Abkhazia depend mainly on other peoples' memories and political discourse to create emotional bonds to the area their parents fled and to form their ideas of return. Results from the quantitative survey indicate that youth living in Tbilisi, closer to the political centre, to a higher extent intend to return than their peers in Zugdidi. Meanwhile young people's experiences of everyday life in current dwellings in relative stability create emotional bonds to their present place of living. These experiences challenge both collective processes and experiences from Abkhazia when it comes to maintaining the desire to return. This research offers insights into the human consequences of war and conflict. More specifically, this dissertation sheds light on how young internally displaced persons (IDPs) are living in a borderland (in both temporal and spatial terms) characterized by uncertainty-- between the past and the future as well as between Georgia and Abkhazia. Practices of exclusion and segregation are constitutive of the borders and boundaries that permeate life experiences of the forcibly displaced youth. Furthermore, these borders and boundaries are situated in riskscapes of disputed belongings, which makes this borderland more or less stable for different groups of IDPs. This dissertation contributes to an increased understanding of how political aspirations and personal desire to return preserves instability and uncertainty as long as return is not possible. ; Denna avhandling undersöker konsekvenserna av gränser och gränsskapande för hur unga georgiska internflyktingar från Abkhazien förstår frågor om tillhörighet och återvändande. Jag utgår från teorier om hem och tillhörighet, liksom teorier om gränser och gränsskapande, och lokaliserar dem till geografier av osäkerhet – "riskscapes" – områden som karaktäriseras av konflikter och/eller ojämlikheter. Det datamaterial som ligger till grund för avhandlingen utgörs av två intervjustudier i Zugdidi nära gränsen till Abkhazien; och en enkätstudie som genomfördes i Zugdidi och i den georgiska huvudstaden Tbilisi. Materialet har analyserats genom användande av både kvalitativa och kvantitativa metoder. Avhandlingens respondenter utgör inte en homogen grupp. Några respondenter har familj och släktingar som bor i Abkhazien eller har delvis växt upp i området, medan andra aldrig ens varit där. Det primära målet för den georgiska regeringen har varit att internflyktingarna ska återvända till sina hem, och regeringens ansträngningar för integration i lokalsamhället har länge varit otillräckliga. Det saknas fredsavtal och bristen på säkerhet förhindrar återvändande i stor skala. Trots de ökade gränskontroller som gjort det svårt att korsa de facto gränslinjen tar sig en del ungdomar ändå over gränsen. Genom att göra detta bestrider de både de abkhaziska de facto myndigheterna och gränsen som symbol för separation och åtskillnad, medan de hävdar sin rätt att känna tillhörighet till Abkhazien. Att ha ett hus och sociala relationer i Abkhazien bidrar till emotionella band och en starkare uppmaning till att återvända. Å andra sidan kan erfarenheterna av vardagens umbäranden inne i Abkhazien resultera i att unga människor inte ser återvändande som ett tänkbart alternativ. Ungdomar som aldrig varit i Abkhazien är beroende av andra människors minnen och politiska diskurser för att skapa känslomässiga band och tankar om återvändande till det område deras föräldrar har flytt från. Resultat från den kvantitativa undersökningen visar vidare att ungdomar som bor i Tbilisi, närmare Georgiens politiska centrum, i högre grad anger att de har för avsikt att återvända än deras jämnåriga i Tbilisi. Ungdomars erfarenheter av vardagslivet i sina nuvarande bostäder i relativ stabilitet bidrar emellertid till att skapa känslomässiga band till den aktuella bostadsorten. Dessa erfarenheter utmanar på så vis både de kollektiva processerna och erfarenheter från Abkhazien när det gäller att upprätthålla drömmen om återvändande. Avhandlingen bidrar med insikter om konsekvenser av krig och konflikter för människors vardagsliv. Mer specifikt belyser jag hur avhandlingens unga respondenter lever i en sorts rumsligt och temporalt gränsland mellan det förflutna och framtiden och mellan Georgien och Abkhazien, och detta gränsland kännetecknas av osäkerhet. Praktiker av isärhållande och segregering är konstituerande för de gränser som genomsyrar internflyktingungdomarnas erfarenheter. Dessa gränser är dessutom situerade i "riskscapes" av ifrågasatta tillhörigheter, som gör gränslandet mer eller mindre stabilt för olika grupper av internflyktingar. Anlass der Arbeit ist die Notwendigkeit der Koordination von städtebaulicher und Energieplanung. Die Emissionen des Gebäudesektors können durch räumliche Koordination von Energienachfrage und –angebot gesenkt werden, z.B. durch die räumliche Priorisierung energetischer Sanierung, die Schaffung von Wärmeverbünden und die Einbindung von Abwärmequellen. Wegen der mit Wärmetransport verbundenen Verluste ist die räumliche Konstellation von Quellen und Senken für die Wärmeversorgung hoch relevant. Deshalb braucht es ein besseres Verständnis der räumlichen Verteilung der Wärmenachfrage, d.h. nicht der Bedarfe (ein terminus technicus für die mit Hilfe bautechnischer Information vorausberechnete Nachfrage), sondern der tatsächlichen Verbräuche, die von Bedarfen um oft mehr als 50% differieren und im Wesentlichen von Nutzern bestimmt sind. Mit der zunehmenden Verzahnung von Strom- und Wärmesektor und der Schaffung kleinerer Wärmeverbünde wird nicht nur das räumliche, sondern auch das zeitliche Muster der Wärmverbräuche zunehmend interessant. Hierzu gibt es noch kaum systematische Analysen. In diese Lücke stößt die Arbeit vor. Ziel der Arbeit ist die Entwicklung eines Modells, das den Wärmeverbrauch auf der Mikro-ebene (d.h. für einzelne Gebäude) in seiner räumlich-zeitlichen Verteilung für große städtische Agglomerationen simulieren kann. Dies erfordert: (1) Modelle einzelner Gebäude, (2) die explizite Berücksichtigung des menschlichen Verhaltens in der Bestimmung der Wärmenachfrage und (3) die Simulation einer großen Anzahl unterschiedlicher Gebäude, die ein Stadtgebiet definieren. Dafür kombiniert die Arbeit Methoden aus mehreren Disziplinen: (a) die räumliche Mikrosimulation (in den Wirtschaftswissenschaften entstanden, heute auch von Geografie und Sozialwissenschaften vorangetrieben), (b) die Gebäudesimulation, die Energieflüsse im einzelnen Gebäude nachzeichnet (traditionell in Bauphysik und technischer Thermodynamik verankert) und (c) die Typisierung des Gebäudebestands und die Allokation der Typen auf Einzelgebäude, die von vielen Autoren (meist aus den Ingenieur- und Wirtschaftswissenschaften) benutzt wird, um Politikmaßnahmen für den Gebäudesektor zu evaluieren. Das wichtigste Ergebnis dieser Arbeit ist ein Modell, das (1) einen synthetischen geo-refenzierten Gebäudebestand mit darin wohnenden Haushalten erzeugen kann ("synthetisch" heißt nicht etwa "frei erfunden", sondern Daten über Gebäude und Soziodemografie genügend, die auf relativ niedrigem räumlichen Niveau, aber nicht immer auf Mikro-ebene vorliegen) und (2) die Wärmenachfrage der einzelnen Gebäude mit einer hohen zeitlichen Auflösung unter Berücksichtigung von Haushaltscharakteristika simulieren kann. Das in der Arbeit entwickelte Modell stellt eine einfache städtische Umgebung mit Daten zu einzelnen Gebäuden dar, angereichert mit energetisch relevanten Parametern. Die synthetischen Haushalte, die auf die Gebäude alloziiert werden, entsprechen in Summe und Verteilung vorhandenen soziodemografischen Daten auf höherer Aggregationsebene. Diese Daten werden mit der bundesweiten deutschen Zeitbudgeterhebung angereichert, um Aktivitäten und vor allem Aufenthaltszeiten der Haushaltsmitglieder im Gebäude zu beschreiben. Das Modell ist intern validiert, d.h. der Mechanismus, der den synthetischen Gebäudebestand und die synthetische Population erzeugt, wird in seiner Wirkung mit den aggregierten Ausgangsdaten verglichen. Das primäre Maß für diese Validierung ist der Total Absolute Error (T AE). – Eine externe Validierung des Modells war aufgrund fehlender Verbrauchsdaten in der Breite noch nicht möglich. Die Forschergemeinde arbeitet jedoch daran, solche Datenbanken zu erzeugen und zur Verfügung zu stellen. Die Nutzung der Methode der Spatial Microsimulation ermöglichte die Projektion des Gebäudebestands ins Jahr 2030 ohne großen modell- und datentechnischen Aufwand. Dasselbe gilt für die in dieser Arbeit vorgenommene Skalierung des Modells auf die nationale Ebene. Die Übertragbarkeit des Modells auf andere geografische Gebiete sowie seine Anwendung auf andere Forschungsfragen (z.B. asserverbräuche oder Sanitärtechnik) scheint vielversprechend. ; Motivation for the thesis is the need for coordinating urban planning and energy planning. The emissions of the building sector can be reduced by the spatial coordination of building energy demand and building energy supply, e.g. via the spatial prioritization of building energy retrofits, the creation of heating grids and the integration of waste heat sources into the supply. As heat transport is associated with losses, the spatial constellation of heat sinks and sources are highly relevant for supply concepts. That is why a better understanding of the spatial distribution of heat consumption is needed – that is, real heat consumption, not computed heat demand based on physical building characteristics. Heat consumption can differ as much as 50% or more from pre-calculated heat demands. It is the building users and their behavior and presence times that account for this spread. As heat supply and electric power supply are increasingly integrated, and as there is a trend towards smaller heating grids, the temporal distribution of urban heat demand, too, becomes more interesting. There is little systematic analysis of this as of yet. This is where the present dissertation is making a contribution? Aim of the thesis is to develop a model capable of simulating heat demand at the micro scale (i.e. for individual buildings) in its spatial-temporal spread for large urban agglomerations. This requires: (1) individual building models, (2) the explicit consideration of human behavior in estimating heat consumption and (3) the simulation of a large number of different buildings defining an urban area. Towards this objective, the thesis uses methods from different disciplines : (a) spatial microsimulation (microsimulation originated in economics and has been taken up in geography and the social sciences which enriched it with the spatial dimension), (b) building simulation which traces energy flows in buildings (traditionally anchored in building physics and technical thermodynamics) and (c) the classification of the building stock, and allocation of types onto buildings in various data sets (practiced by many authors, e. g. in engineering and economics, for evaluation of policy measures addressing the building stock). The main result of this thesis is a model which can (1) generate a synthetic building stock with households residing in buildings (whereby "synthetic" does not mean "invented", but rather, satisfying data on buildings and socio-demographics available at a certain (low) level of aggregation, but not at the micro-level) (2) simulate heat demand of individual buildings at high temporal resolution, taking explicit consideration of socio-demographic characteristics of building users. The model developed in the thesis represents a simple urban environment containing geo-referenced buildings enriched with energy relevant parameters. The synthetic households which are allocated to the buildings do match, in sum and distribution of socio-demographic parameters, household data available at a certain level of aggregation. These household data are enriched with national German time use survey data in order to specify activities and occupancy times of household members. The model is validated internally, meaning that the results of the mechanism which generates the synthetic stock and the synthetic population is checked against the aggregated data on which the building and population allocation process started. The primary metric used for this validation is the Total Absolute Error (T AE). It was not possible, at this point, to validate the mechanism externally, as there were too few heat consumption data for this purpose. Consumption data, however, are urgently needed in this field, and there is work in the scientific community to produce this type of data and make it accessible to the research community. Using the spatial microsimulation approach made it possible, in this thesis, to project the building stock into the year 2030, without major effort on data collection or model structure. The same applies for scaling the model to the national level, which was also done in this thesis. The applicability of the model to other geographical areas and research questions (e. g., concerning water consumption or building sanitation technology) seems promising.

Kamin škofijske palače v Ljubljani je eno od najbolj nenavadnih umetniških del z začetka 16. stoletja. S katerimi konteksti je treba povezati to anonimno delo, ki je nastalo okrog leta 1512? To je bistveno vprašanje, ki ga je treba razrešiti brez posploševanj, kar pomeni, da se je treba soočiti s problematiko, namesto da bi se ji izogibali. Ta kamin, ki so mu raziskovalci namenjali le malo pozornosti, naj bi vseboval prvine »gotike« in »renesanse«, toda te besede leta 1512 niso imele nobenega pomena, preprosto niso obstajale. Edina beseda, ki so jo takrat uporabljali v škofijski palači v Ljubljani, je bila »eleganten«, in to besedo je treba postaviti v nasprotje z drugim izrazom, ki je bil takrat v Evropi zelo v modi, »barbarski«. Med osebnostmi, ki jih je treba umestiti okrog tega dela, sta škof Krištof Ravbar in humanist Avguštin Prygl, opredeliti pa je mogoče tudi širši intelektualni krog z Bernardom Pergerjem, Lorenzom Vallo, Angelom Polizianom in Francescom Colonnom. Če smo pozorni na spise teh avtorjev, še posebej na Colonnove, ni pravega vrednostnega nasprotja med njihovim časom in antiko. Pri njej se navdihujejo, da bi ustvarili govorico – nosilko kulture –, ne da bi zavračali srednjeveško umetnost, pri čemer so spoštovali superiornost krščanstva.

Težko je poimenovati bitja, upodobljena na kaminu škofijske palače, in poimenovanje je lahko celo nevarno. Ne smemo prezreti tega semantičnega problema, kajti vsako navajanje imena se sklicuje na določeno kulturno ali jezikovno ozadje, ki nezavedno usmerja naše sklepanje. Prav tako je nemogoče uporabljati besedišče tiste dobe, ker pogosto ne vemo, katere jezike so govorili naročniki in umetniki ter kako so prilagajali ali prevajali določene izraze (to je bil pravi intelektualni problem že okrog leta 1500 – spor o nominalizmu, prve teorije prevajanja, Colonnova semantična oklevanja). Zavedali so se tudi, da ime trdno določi neko poljubno resničnost ter ne razreši problema razmerja med jezikovnimi bitnostmi in miselnimi predstavami. Tako zadnje raziskave na temo hibridizacije in metamorfoze zavzamejo stališče, da je treba bitja predvsem dobro opisati in jim ne dajati imen, ker jih lahko s tem iztrgamo iz njihovega konteksta.

V Ljubljani ne vemo, ali gre za tuja, imaginarna, sanjska ali mitska bitja, preprosto za stare zglede ali igrive stvaritve. Poleg tega je bil proces hibridizacije v tistem času po Evropi zelo razširjen na različnih ravneh kulture, vsak primer je specifi čen. Z enakimi težavami se srečujemo pri dekorativnem rastlinskem okrasju, ki ne napotuje na nobeno posebno kulturno sfero – ali na več sfer hkrati.

Da bi bolje razumeli kontekst, bomo skušali zamejiti problematiko govorice – umetniške, književne in domače. Ob preučevanju, kako je sestavljen kamin, lahko analiziramo tip govorice, ki je uporabljen. Noben jezik še ni določen (niti latinščina ne) in izbrati neki jezik pomeni tudi, da se človek vpiše v zgodovino, v politično in zemljepisno polje. Ker je Ljubljana križišče, so bile izbire nabite s pomenom, ljudje so se hoteli vpisovati v različna kulturna področja, med različne oblasti, od Rima, prek Svetega rimskega cesarstva in tja do slovanskega sveta. V tem kontekstu je bila naloga antike ponuditi celoto modelov, vendar pa je nikakor ne smemo obravnavati kot oviro za udejanjanje umetniške svobode in inteligence. To dvoje je imela, nasprotno, nalogo spodbujati.

Analiza tipologije kamina kaže, da ne ustreza nobeni geografi ji, interpretira tako antiko kakor tudi srednji vek in je inovativna – ne glede na kakovost izdelave. Prisotna je torej jasna volja po razlikovanju od svojih sodobnikov. Da bi bolje preučili to razsežnost, je treba poseči po orodjih, lastnih govoricam. Mogoče je uporabiti splošen izraz »govorica umetnosti«, semiologija ali deli diskurza v retoriki, toda to nam le malo pomaga.

Preveč prvin glede namenov se nam izmika. Zato je praktično nemogoče, da bi se na njihovi osnovi lotili medbesedilnega branja, ki bi razkrilo avtorja, osebo, ki ji je delo posvečeno/naročnika, gledalca. Tudi ni več sledu o razpravah o »arhitekturni govorici«, toda interpretacije Vitruvija so bile še zelo polemične – in torej vir svobode. Dejansko kamin ustreza izjemno nenavadnemu ukvarjanju z oblikami, do katerega je v Avstriji in Evropi prišlo v letih 1500–1520.

Torej je treba kamin škofijske palače v Ljubljani poskusiti gledati in obravnavati zunaj vsakega referenčnega sistema, osredotočenega na Italijo ali na kakšno drugo pokrajino. To delo se opredeljuje samo kot lastno središče svojega referenčnega sistema. Če analiziramo like kot sintagme s sistemom paradigem in leksemov, je mogoče razbrati »jezikovno strukturo«. Najprej, površina ali praznina nimata vrednosti paradigme, če uporabimo teorije Aloisa Riegla in Clauda Zilberberga, liki so torej omejeni na preprost diskurz brez razmerja s kaminom, ki je njihov nosilec. Kar zadeva slovnična obrazila, je sistem števila in spolov zelo poenostavljen, interakcije med različnimi prvinami kamina so torej omejene na najmanjšo možno mero. Sami liki so sestavljeni iz leksikalnih in ne gramatikalnih sintagem, s prehodnimi glagolskimi razmerji. Ta poenostavitev govorice, v kateri pa ostaja nekaj jasnih pravil, vendarle osvetljuje napor in premišljevanje obdobja, kako narediti za svojo govorico in kulturo preteklosti, z namenom utrditi in poveličati sedanjost ter ne obuditi v življenje časa, ki so ga takrat že imeli za mrtvega. Na semantični ravni je velik problem, kako na novo izraziti svoje znanje, da bi ga mogli prenesti dalje. Na primer: obrtnik, ki je delal kamin, ni imel jezikoslovnega, kulturnega in teoretičnega znanja, da bi razumel napotila humanistov škofovskega dvora v Ljubljani, in iz tehničnega vidika je njegova izdelava slab prevod namenov naročnikov.

Zakaj je vredno, da se posvetimo kaminu škofijske palače v Ljubljani in ne kakšnemu drugemu delu, bogatejšemu in bolj kakovostnemu, pri katerem bi se bilo lažje poigravati z izrazi, kjer bi bilo lažje razbirati interakcije? Zato, ker za bogatejša dela že obstajajo številne analitične metode, medtem ko se je ta kamin upiral vsem poskusom analize, ostal je zazidan v molk posploševanj. Treba je izdelati nova orodja, da bi ga pripravili k temu, da »spregovori«, in se osvoboditi splošnosti, ki izbrisujejo bogastvo posamičnega konteksta.

Tako v Ravbarjevem krogu kakor pri Colonni ni umetnost ne antična ne moderna, predvsem je nekaj domišljijskega in duševnega. Treba je opustiti idejo vpliva in uporabiti idejo micelija Gillesa Deleuza in Félixa Guattarija, da bi dojeli medsebojno vplivanje med intelektualnimi in umetniškimi stvaritvami, se pravi, da ni hierarhične podreditve, da lahko vsaka prvina vpliva na vse druge ne glede na njihov položaj. Na Kranjskem je škofijski kamin zelo rodovitno vozlišče v še dokaj neraziskanem miceliju.

Mit Ansätzen des interkulturellen Lernens soll im Geographieunterricht Rassismus entgegengewirkt werden. Der Geographiedidaktik fehlt allerdings bisher eine systematische Auseinandersetzung mit lebensweltlichen Zugehörigkeits- und Rassismuserfahrungen von Lernenden. Birte Schröder füllt diese Lücke und setzt sich in ihrer empirischen Untersuchung mit unterschiedlichen Zugehörigkeitsaushandlungen von Jugendlichen in der Migrationsgesellschaft auseinander. Dabei stehen Brüche, Irritationen und Widerstände im Umgang mit rassismusrelevanten Grenzziehungen und Deutungsmustern im Mittelpunkt. Darauf aufbauend schlägt sie Orientierungslinien für eine rassismuskritische geographische Bildung vor.

This paper is situated in the emerging literature on minority/immigrant internal migration which grew from questions about the population dynamics behind ethnic residential segregation. This work has revealed both that migration within Britain is creating ethnic mixing and that there are considerable ethnic differences in levels and geographies of residential mobility. This paper contributes to our understanding of these differences by examining how being a student is related to residential mobility for different ethnic groups. It suggests that different residential decisions and migration norms at the point of entry into higher education partly explain ethnic differences in mobility. Using 2001 Census microdata (Sample of Anonymised Records), the paper finds that minority ethnic students are less mobile than their White counterparts, that being a student increases the probability of migrating for White British and Chinese young adults but decreases the probability of migrating for Pakistani and Black African young adults, and particularly so for Pakistani females. Given that it is common to migrate away from home for University study in Britain, this raises questions about equality of access to Higher Education. The examination of mobility in relation to key life events in young adulthood enables debates about ethnic geographies to move beyond the concern with segregation. The paper concludes with challenges for further research and a discussion of the policy implications of the findings in the context of current changes to Higher Education funding in the UK. ; L'article se situa dins la bibliografia emergent sobre les migracions internes de les minories immigrants. Aquesta ha augmentat a partir de l'interès sobre la dinàmica poblacional després de la segregació ètnica residencial. L'estudi ha posat de manifest que la migració dins de la Gran Bretanya permet que es produeixin barreges entre ètnies i que existeixin diferències ètniques considerables en els nivells de mobilitat residencial i en els seus patrons territorials. Aquest article contribueix a entendre aquestes diferències a través de l'examen de la relació entre ser estudiant i la mobilitat residencial per diferents ètnies. S'hi suggereix que diferents decisions residencials i pautes migratòries d'accés a la universitat explicarien, en part, les diferències ètniques de mobilitat. A través de microdades censals (mostra anònima de dades) de 2001, s'arriba a la conclusió que els estudiants de les minories ètniques són menys mòbils que els seus homòlegs blancs. Ser estudiant incrementa la probabilitat d'emigrar, tant dels joves britànics blancs, com dels joves xinesos, però disminueix en la dels negres africans i la dels paquistanesos, especialment la de les dones d'aquesta darrera ètnia. El fet que a la Gran Bretanya, normalment, s'emigri lluny de la llar familiar per anar a la universitat, qüestionaria la igualtat en l'accés a l'educació superior. Relacionar la mobilitat i certs esdeveniments clau en la vida dels joves adults permet que els debats sobre geografies ètniques puguin anar més enllà de la preocupació per la segregació. El trabajo realizado ha puesto de manifiesto que la migración dentro de Gran Bretaña permite que se produzcan mezclas entre etnias y que existen considerables diferencias étnicas en los niveles de movilidad residencial y en sus patrones territoriales. Este artículo contribuye a entender dichas diferencias a través del examen de la relación entre ser estudiante y la movilidad residencial para diferentes etnias. En él se sugiere que distintas decisiones residenciales y pautas migratorias de acceso a la universidad explicarían en parte las diferencias étnicas de movilidad. A través de microdatos censales (muestra anónima de datos) de 2001, se llega a la conclusión de que los estudiantes de las minorías étnicas son menos móviles que sus homólogos blancos. Ser estudiante incrementa la probabilidad de emigrar, tanto de los jóvenes británicos blancos, como de los jóvenes chinos, pero disminuye la de los negros africanos y la de los pakistaníes, especialmente la de las mujeres de esta última etnia. El hecho que en Gran Bretaña normalmente se migre lejos del hogar familiar para ir a la universidad cuestionaría la igualdad en el acceso a la educación superior. Relacionar la movilidad y ciertos acontecimientos clave en la vida de jóvenes adultos permite que los debates sobre geografías étnicas puedan ir más allá de la preocupación por la segregación. El artículo concluye planteando retos para futuras investigaciones y con un debate sobre las implicaciones de los resultados sobre las políticas en el contexto de los cambios que en la actualidad sufre la financiación de la educación superior en el Reino Unido. ; Cet article se situe dans l'émergente littérature sur la mobilité interne des minorités/immigrants, qui est accrue en conséquence de l'intérêt par les dynamiques démographiques derrière la ségrégation ethnique résidentielle. L'analyse démontre que la migration interne favorise les mélanges ethniques et qu'il y a de considérables différences entre les ethnies par rapport aux niveaux de mobilité résidentielle et sa distribution géographique. Cet article contribue à comprendre ces différences à travers l'examen de la relation entre le fait d'être étudiant et la mobilité résidentielle, pour différents groupes ethniques. Les résultats suggèrent que différentes décisions résidentielles et normes migratoires d'accès à l'Université expliqueraient, en partie, les différences de mobilité entre ethnies. À travers des micro-données du recensement de 2001 (échantillon de données anonymes), on a découvert que les étudiants des minorités ethniques sont moins mobiles que leurs homologues blancs. Être étudiant augmente la probabilité de migrer des jeunes britanniques blancs et des chinois, mais diminue celle des noirs africains et des pakistanais (et en particulier, pour ce dernier groupe, celle des femmes). This book examines the development of China's national ambitions under its current leader Xi Jinping and the dilemma they present for the United States and also Japan. It emphasises the importance of geopolitics, that is the way national strategies and policies are shaped and in some cases determined by geographic location. Focusing especially on China's national rejuvenation and its rapidly growing military capability and navy, and on the likely impact on the region of China regaining the status and influence it enjoyed in dynastic times, the book highlights the hard choices faced by the United States as it seeks to protect its geopolitical position in the Western Pacific, particularly in the South China Sea, the Korean Peninsula and the Taiwan straits. How far should the United States confront China or accommodate China, possibly at the risk of undermining its geopolitical position and its alliance relationships with Japan, Australia and South Korea?
