"Intimate partner violence (IPV) is a serious social problem affecting both men and women worldwide that can lead to a variety of negative mental and physical health effects. This book contains nine chapters that address the problem of IPV, exploring methods of preventing IPV as well as treatment for victims of IPV. Chapter One centers on the issue of blame, reviewing current research on the associations between self-blaming attributions and psychological outcomes among survivors of IPV. Chapter Two proposes a theoretical reflection on the phenomenon of domestic violence based on its understanding as a problem sustained by cultural beliefs and discourses and which can be tackled through education and the promotion of public debate, by means of institutional advertisements. Chapter Three highlights the importance of capacity building Brazilian police forces to tackle cases of IPV as well as to protect and enable victims to fully exercise their rights. Chapter Four argues that the Domestic Violence Risk instrument used by Portuguese police to assess IPV cases should be reworked, as it tends to assign a medium level of risk in cases that the scientific community would likely associate with high risk. Chapter Five discusses the relationship between IPV and academic stress. Chapter Six reviews research on factors affecting women's treatment engagement in the aftermath of IPV, including characteristics of the violence/violent relationship, types of mental health problems following IPV, and individual differences in personality and demographics. Chapter Seven deals with the coping mechanisms available to women living with HIV/AIDS in Tanzania who experience IPV. Chapter Eight details the relevance of methodological and ethical aspects of studies on violence involving children and how these requirements may affect research validity in this domain. Finally, Chapter Nine presents a study of violence against women media campaigns that use graphic imagery and how they impact fears of behaving assertively and of victimization, safety self-efficacy, and collective female self-esteem"--

"This book has examined some of the pressing issues and challenges related to modernity, modernization, and globalization of the 21st century. The challenges facing Africa today have changed little since the end of colonial rule. Once the optimism that characterized the African struggle for independence dissipated in the 1960s, statesmen of the continent's respective nations were quick to realize how many unsettling issues had developed during the period of European colonial rule. For the most part, these new statesmen focused so much on retaining their political power that they focused little attention and resources to the socioeconomic welfare of their subjects. As a consequence, sixty years after independence, African nations still find it difficult to face a number of challenges: to establish meaningful democratic-governing institutions that could permanently eradicate graft, unwarranted patronage and corruption; to configure self-reliant economies capable of redressing the poverty gap and adapt to the developmental needs of the people of the continent; and to establish concrete social structures centered on the advancement of gender equality, the protection of women's rights, and the promotion of education and healthcare. Many researchers and policy analysts have emphasized the consequences of bad political leadership on the continent, limiting the discussion to one about power and the powerful. This volume shifts the focus to the plight of the powerless, poor, and destitute millions on the continent who continue to search for opportunities despite the accumulated negatives of bad colonial, political, and economic policies. For these millions, the day-to-day challenges of dealing with the negative effects of debt-ridden and corrupt societies, diseases such as HIV/AIDS, population growth and poor family planning, ineffective attention to human and environmental rights issues, and the flight of many of their brightest sons and daughters remain their plight. The collection's strength lies in its approach to contemporary African challenges with a twenty-first-century framework--namely, the UN's Millennium Development Goals (MDG)--while also presenting important issues from various African perspectives. Unlike the pessimistic emphasis on corruption and conflict articulated by many scholars, the studies gathered here constitute a more balanced view of African agency, both positive and negative, in the face of global pressures.

The article deals with the study of everyday virtual business communication. The digital age has a huge impact on individuals, significantly changing their lives, and the life of society is increasingly immersed in the virtual space. The material of the study is Internet communication, specifically group communication of citizens, residents of Saratov, in one of the commercial chats: the speech of women's clothing sellers and buyers. The purpose of the study is to show the development of the chat genre and its functioning in business communication. The methods applied are those of participant observation and of discursive analysis. The specific features of the chat were manifested in a steadily followed topic of communication (no changes of topic occur). This reflects one of the important communication practices in people's daily lives – the one related to the purchase / sale of goods. The business sphere leaves its mark on the choice of the type of communication: a mixed type of communication (semi-official) is being implemented. The dominant communicative strategy is the strategy of cooperative speech interaction, including courtesy tactics (tactics representing initial and final contact, gratitude expression tactics, compliment tactics, etc.). These developments represent the process whereby a culture of virtual business communication based on the principle of mutual respect is being formed. The article also studies linguistic features of the chat. In the speech of the communicants, the vocabulary of the thematic group "Clothes and hats" is mainly used: blouse, turtleneck, jeans, jumper, bonnet, etc. Another word group constitutes foreign vocabulary related to the world of fashion which has not yet been fixed in the Russian language (jeggings, snood, skinny, moms, etc.). Conversational signals used in the chat include diminutives (blouse, skirt, novelty), communicatives (for example, the conjunction A used in the initial position in interrogative constructions). Applying a qualitative content-analysis methodology, this article sets out a transversal study providing a brief chronological journey through the historical context of sound-creation. On the one hand, it presents contributions made by women to electronic music-creation, such as their influence on the development of different synthesizers for the creation of sound. On the other, it takes a look at contemporary artistic practices in sound-creation and explores how technology has contributed to the democratization of women's work in electronic-music studies. This shows how the creative process is becoming increasingly inclusive through technology. One example is that of the trends in computer-based art-making relating to live coding. This article joins a growing research impulse in the Spanish-speaking world calling for contributions to its development that speak to its creative processes while avoiding discrimination against people based on their social context. The purpose of writing/research to answers to legal problems experienced by female journalists in a gender perspective and to know strategy of legal protection for female journalists in the future. This type of research is normative legal research. The type of approach used is the statutory and conceptual approach. The results of this study showed that the problem of gender in media is more or less related to the position of marginalization and subordination for women in various fields, among others, the lack of involvement for women in journalism activities, legitimacy regarding gender bias, economic and political interests that dominate, regulation in media that is insensitive about gender and the gap between conventional and gender sensitive journalism. Prevention of protracted gender inequality concerning women, especially against female journalists, it is necessary to have a legal reconstruction considering that women are citizens in the development of women's resources certainly have the same position as men in terms of their position, their rights and obligations so as to get equal opportunities in various fields. Tujuan penulisan/penelitian adalah mengetahui jawaban mengenai permasalahan hukum yang dialami oleh jurnalis perempuan dalam perspektif gender dan mengetahui strategi perlindungan hukum terhadap jurnalis perempuan dimasa yang akan datang. Pencegahan ketimpangan gender yang berlarut-larut mengenai perempuan khususnya terhadap jurnalis perempuan maka perlu adanya rekonstruksi hukum mengingat perempuan merupakan warga negara dalam pembangunan sumber daya perempuan tentu mempunyai kedudukan sama terhadap laki-laki dalam hal kedudukannya, hak-haknya serta kewajiban-kewajibannya sehingga memperoleh kesempatan yang sama dalam berbagai bidang.
