The article is inspired by intensified attention to the esoteric in humanities. The author tries to find out what are the roots of esoterism in tradition, what are the links between esoterism and an idealistic explanation of art and creative nature. The connection between esoterism and modernism is being stressed. The main attention is paid to Lithuanian literature of the beginning of the 20th century: it programically declared the longing towards the secret, the mystical. Links are established between esoterism, occultism, mysticism and partly hermetism.From the methodological point of view, the main orientation is towards phenomenological notion of literature and literary process. The creative activity of consciousness has many various levels of experience, however, it is impossible divide this activity into rational levels of reason and result. In the literary process there are important not only external (social, political, economical factors) but internal movements of consciousness as well. They are linked with the state of longing, anxiety, seeking, more or less explainable, and with personal experience of artists.Esoterism is rooted in ancient mysterious religions and shows the secretness of religious doctrines and cults. In cultural history esoterism denotes an attention to the mystical, unexplainable (both in personal life and in the world); the attention is of a more general type. Magic and ocultism in some cases are the broader, in other cases the narrower frames of esoterism.

In den Jahrzehnten nach dem Krieg kommt die Antwort von Louis Henry am INED, der eine historische und überwiegend statistische Demographie begründet, die in den Arbeiten von Fernand Braudel und der Schule der Annales aufgegriffen werden. In den 1980er Jahren jedoch durchläuft die Disziplin eine Periode der Verunsicherung: die von Michel Foucault beeinflusste Dekonstruktion der Kategorien, die Kritik des Objektivismus, die von der Statistikgeschichte aufgedeckten, unsicheren ideologischen Wurzeln der Demographie (Natalismus, Eugenik, Wille zur biopolitischen Kontrolle). Um zu verhindern, dass die Reflexivität an die Stelle der Wissensproduktion tritt, werden neue Methoden (die Mikrogeschichte) und neue Studienobjekte (die Institutionen) eingeführt. Auf die frühere historische Demographie folgt eine soziale und politische Bevölkerungsgeschichte. Ihr Ziel ist die gleichzeitige Konstruktion von Institutionen, Politiken und Wissen im Bereich der Bevölkerung. Der von Malthus bekämpfte Condorcet, Achille Guillard, Erfinder des Wortes Demographie und selbstverständlich Maurice Halbwachs haben die 'soziale' Beschaffenheit der Bevölkerung formalisiert. Im Gegensatz zu den soziobiologischen Versuchungen der Gegenwart stellt die organische Verbindung zwischen Bevölkerung und sozialer Sicherung die Frage nach der Selbst-Kreierung der Gesellschaft.' Fonthill, in Wiltshire, is traditionally associated with the writer and collector William Beckford who built his Gothic fantasy house called Fonthill Abbey at the end of the eighteenth century. The collapse of the Abbey's tower in 1825 transformed the name Fonthill into a symbol for overarching ambition and folly, a sublime ruin. Fonthill is, however, much more than the story of one man's excesses. Beckford's Abbey is only one of several important houses to be built on the estate since the early sixteenth century, all of them eventually consumed by fire or deliberately demolished, and all of them oddly forgotten by historians. Little now remains: a tower, a stable block, a kitchen range, some dressed stone, an indentation in a field. Fonthill Recovered draws on histories of art and architecture, politics and economics to explore the rich cultural history of this famous Wiltshire estate. The first half of the book traces the occupation of Fonthill from the Bronze Age to the twenty-first century. Some of the owners surpassed Beckford in terms of their wealth, their collections, their political power and even, in one case, their sexual misdemeanours. They include Charles I's Chancellor of the Exchequer, and the richest commoner in the nineteenth century. The second half of the book consists of essays on specific topics, filling out such crucial areas as the complex history of the designed landscape, the sources of the Beckfords' wealth and their collections, and one essay that features the most recent appearance of the Abbey in a video game.

This book explores the English verb-particle construction from a historical and cross-linguistic perspective. Challenging established views and tracing their origins in the normative tradition, the author shows the evolution of theconstruction to follow a widely attested path and argues that the apparentpeculiarities of phrasal verbs in Modern English are epiphenomenal to otherstructural characteristics of the language.

This article examines different intellectual-historical approaches to the work of Georg Lukács, arguing that a methodology similar to that of the Cambridge School is, curiously, that most in line with Lukács's own approach. I begin with some general methodological comments on intellectual history, before showing that a proper appreciation of the discourses within which Lukács was situated is essential to understanding both the specifics and the overall project of History and Class Consciousness. Finally, I argue that situating thinkers like Lukács properly within their time does not reduce them to museum pieces; rather, by seeking to capture the alterity of the past without reducing it to familiarity, we may de-reify our own world-views.
