Antbirds (Thamnophilidae) comprise many insectivorous, mostly understory birds present in all Neotropical biomas. Many species occur specifically in the Amazonia, so a decline in species richness is expected from central Amazonian sites, to peripheral ones; this pattern is due primarily to the evolutionary history of the taxon. Rapid surveys to state the antbird species richness were performed in six sites of terra firme forest in the Belém Center of Endemism, the Easternmost and one of the most threatened regions in the Amazonia. These sites followed a series from more central to more peripheral areas, the latter being located in the edge of the Amazonia. The antbird species richness of every site was stated by presence-absence criteria. Two surveys were made in each site, by walking three transects in each of two trails in every survey. This species richness progressively fell from 19 species in the most central site (Gurupi Biological Reserve) to only two in the most peripheral one (São Luís). Probably, the gradient in the species richness is primarily associated to the evolutionary history of this group, however new studies using methods appropriated to assess the effects of environmental degradation in the regional richness of Thamnophilidae and other forest bird species should be encouraged.

Reduced-dimensional perovskites are attractive light-emitting materials due to their efficient luminescence, color purity, tunable bandgap, and structural diversity. A major limitation in perovskite light-emitting diodes is their limited operational stability. Here we demonstrate that rapid photodegradation arises from edge-initiated photooxidation, wherein oxidative attack is powered by photogenerated and electrically-injected carriers that diffuse to the nanoplatelet edges and produce superoxide. We report an edge-stabilization strategy wherein phosphine oxides passivate unsaturated lead sites during perovskite crystallization. With this approach, we synthesize reduced-dimensional perovskites that exhibit 97 ± 3% photoluminescence quantum yields and stabilities that exceed 300 h upon continuous illumination in an air ambient. In April 2009 Kira Lynn Harris debuted a new body of work in a solo presentation at CUE Art Foundation in New York. This article examines two site-specific installations in that exhibition: 2001, Mirror, which references Stanley Kubrick's film 2001: A Space Odyssey, and Prism, Mirror, Lens, inspired by Samuel R. Delany's landmark science fiction novel Dhalgren. While Harris's large-scale Mylar-and-light installations often refer to the Light and Space artists of her native California, to Robert Smithson, to Land Art, and to minimalism and various other areas of art history, her work is studied here, for the first time, through the lens of Afrofuturism.

AbstractWith the increasing availability of behavioral data from diverse digital sources, such as social media sites and cell phones, it is now possible to obtain detailed information about the structure, strength, and directionality of social interactions in varied settings. While most metrics of network structure have traditionally been defined for unweighted and undirected networks only, the richness of current network data calls for extending these metrics to weighted and directed networks. One fundamental metric in social networks is edge overlap, the proportion of friends shared by two connected individuals. Here, we extend definitions of edge overlap to weighted and directed networks and present closed-form expressions for the mean and variance of each version for the Erdős–Rényi random graph and its weighted and directed counterparts. We apply these results to social network data collected in rural villages in southern Karnataka, India. We use our analytical results to quantify the extent to which the average overlap of the empirical social network deviates from that of corresponding random graphs and compare the values of overlap across networks. Our novel definitions allow the calculation of edge overlap for more complex networks, and our derivations provide a statistically rigorous way for comparing edge overlap across networks.

The Disobedient Museum: Writing at the Edge aims to motivate disciplinary thinking to reimagine writing about museums as an activity where resistant forms of thinking, seeing, feeling, and acting can be produced, and to theorize this process as a form of protest against disciplinary stagnation. Drawing on a range of cultural, theoretical, and political approaches, Kylie Message examines potential links between methods of critique today and moments of historical and disciplinary crisis, and asks what contribution museums might make to these, either as direct actors or through activities that sit more comfortably within their institutional remit. Identifying the process of writing about museums as a form of activism, that brings together and elaborates on cultural and political agendas for change, the book explores how a process of engaged critique might benefit museum studies, what this critique might look like, and how museum studies might make a contribution to discourses of social and political change.The Disobedient Museum is the first volume in Routledge's innovative 'Museums in Focus' series and will be of great interest to scholars and students in the fields of Museum, Heritage, Public History, and Cultural Studies. It should also be essential reading for museum practitioners, particularly those engaged with questions about the role of museums in regard to social activism and contentious contemporary challenges.

The study of feminism as a mark of feminist agency is examined across a range of feminist schol arship, followed by reflections on the concluding scene of Ashapurna Devi's novel in Bangla, Pratham Pratisruti, and ends with some conclusions based upon ethnographic work on Indian women and inheritance. The explorations of different sites of fiction and ethnography indicate that individual acts of women's resistance should be kept separate from the systemic changes that organised movements seek to effect.

11 páginas, 6 figuras, 2 tablas ; Alpine treelines are expected to shift upward due to climate warming, whereas warmer conditions can have negative impacts on forests located near the xeric, equatorward limit of the distribution of tree species (rear edge). We compare tree populations forming the distribution limits of mountain pine (Pinus uncinata) in north-eastern Spain: two cold-limited alpine treeline populations, and a rear-edge drought-prone stand. In the treelines, trees were sampled in three altitudinal belts to evaluate within-site variations considering the forest, the transitional ecotone and the treeline. Tree growth was markedly higher in one of the treeline sites (Tesso), particularly in the forest belt, as compared to the other treeline (Las Cutas), and to the warmest rear-edge stand. Tree growth in the rear-edge population depended on June precipitation. Trees presented also comparatively smaller leaves with higher Specific Leaf Area (SLA) there than in the two treelines. Regarding the differences between altitudinal belts within the treelines, treeline soils showed lower N concentrations and a lower content of sand than in forests. Soil microbiota was dominated by bacteria in the treeline and by fungi in the forest, although with differences between sites. Soil characteristics and microbial composition were strongly related, whereas its relationship with tree growth and functional traits was less clear. The marked differences in leaf traits and growth response to climate found when comparing treeline and rear-edge sites highlights the biogeographical uniqueness of sites forming the equatorward distribution limit. The greater tree growth in the Tesso treeline as compared to Las Cutas indicate that interactions between climate and physical and chemical properties of the soil influence tree growth and its interactions with soil microbial communities in the treeline. AbstractInnovation is generally associated with the creation of something new and with economic growth, and is often understood in relation to modernity and its prime social site, 'the city'. Accordingly, the coupling of innovation and rural areas may seem incongruent. Drawing on ethnographic research on Israel's high‐tech scene, we analyse innovation centres located primarily in kibbutzim in the northern and southern regions of the country. This allows us to juxtapose the ultra‐modernist and individualist ethos of the creative actor against a more communal understanding of social life. In these sites, we observe not just the imitation of 'urban' innovation, but also the strong influence of the community and the contribution of local knowledge in the design of technologically innovative products and services. Examining what is taking place outside urban centres thus enables a more complete and nuanced understanding of the interplay between innovation and society at large.

In this study we examined the potential for positive edge effects on folivorous arboreal marsupials inhabiting upland rainforest in the Wet Tropics region of far north Queensland, Australia. We predicted that the folivores should have increased densities at edges relative to interior forest 90 m from the edge owing to the following causal factors, either separately or in combination: (a) increased foliar biomass, measured as vertical foliage density; and/or (b) increased abundance of preferred food trees. To test these hypotheses, we conducted surveys of the lemuroid ringtail possum (Hemibelideus lemuroides), the green ringtail possum (Pseudochirops archeri), the Herbert River ringtail possum (Pseudochirulus herbertensis) and the coppery brushtail possum (Trichosurus vulpecula johnstonii) at two remnant rainforest sites with 'hard' edges such as roads or pasture. Because arboreal species are often difficult to survey accurately within forests, we utilised pellet counts as an index of the population and compared this to the common survey technique of night spotlighting. Our results indicated that pellet counts, combined over all species, were positively and strongly correlated with spotlighting results. Using pellet counts as a relative index of arboreal folivore populations, we found that edge transects contained a higher abundance of all species combined than did interior transects. Further, total foliage density in the 10–30-m vertical transect was found to be significantly correlated with total pellet counts at edge transects. Total preferred tree species was not significantly different between edge and interior transects. From these results we propose that foliage density, as a surrogate for biomass, is a possible mechanism explaining the higher abundance of arboreal marsupials at the edges of these two highland rainforest sites in north Queensland.
