Investigates how postcoloniality is currently being superseded by the emergence of new modernities, especially in Asia. Since postcoloniality remains embedded within the Western historical continuum, it is contended that new modernities that challenge the hegemonic Western conception of modernity & postmodernity are rising. It is maintained that anthropology must attempt to detach itself from its entrenchment within Western thinking & present a truly multipolar anthropological methodology independent of a dominant philosophical framework. David Scott's (1996 [see abstract 9713722]) postcolonial alternatives to capitalism & A. Ong's (1996) examination of the redefinition of Chinese ideology effected by increased economic activity are delineated as challenging dominant Western anthropology. It is concluded that the notion of a multipolar modernity will produce a multipolar anthropology free from ethnocentrism. 2 Photographs, 37 References. Adapted from the source document.
