Este artículo analiza Una vela para el diablo, producida por Eugenio Martín y estrenada en 1973. El objetivo es relacionar históricamente el monstruo femenino con los conflictos en torno a la modernización a partir de los años sesenta. La película revela una serie de conflictos inherentes a los últimos años de la dictadura franquista, especialmente aquellos en torno a la represión y la liberación sexual, así como la respuesta de un gobierno que se negaba a aceptar los cambios. This article analyses the film Una vela para el diablo, produced by Eugenio Martín and released in 1973. The aim is to relate the film's female monster to the conflicts around modernization that started in Spain in the 1960s. It shows the persistent conflicts that permeated the last years of Franco's dictatorship, especially those surrounding repression and sexual liberation, as well as the reactionary response of a government that refused to accept the social changes.

El asesino en serie no puede ser entendido únicamente como una categorización criminológica sino también como un constructo discursivo necesario para mantener el orden social. Su monstruosidad en el cine de terror y en los medios ha servido para reforzar la labor de salvaguardar la "pureza" normativa por parte del psiquiatra/criminólogo. La metodología seguida se ha basado en la interdisciplinariedad de los estudios culturales y, en particular, en el análisis fílmico e histórico del periodo. Además, la muestra de setenta películas analizadas en este estudio nos ha permitido observar la existencia de una serie de tendencias. Entre los principales resultados, cabe destacar la similitud de la monstruosidad y la normalidad en relación con la ordenación jerárquica de las categorías mentales.

[spa] Esta investigación presenta una lectura comparativa de las obras de Jacques Derrida y Emmanuel Levinas con el doble objetivo de medir exactamente hasta dónde llegan las convergencias que la crítica en general ha detectado entre ellos y de conceptualizar, de la manera más sintética posible, los puntos que los separan. Nuestra propuesta es pensar esa compleja relación a través del concepto derridiano de herencia, en lugar de ilustrarla sencillamente con la figura del quiasmo, como a menudo se ha hecho. A diferencia de esta figura, el concepto de herencia no sugiere un encuentro casual entre sus discursos, sino que entiende cada uno de ellos como una respuesta, a la vez fiel e infiel, a la «llamada» del otro. Naturalmente, una lectura como ésa habrá de pasar, de forma obligada, por un análisis de sus respectivos pensamientos. Para llevarlo a cabo, tomamos como marco interpretativo común el concepto de hospitalidad –la acogida de lo otro–, el cual permite aglutinar de principio a fin las trayectorias de ambos filósofos y realizar en consecuencia una meticulosa comparación de sus proyectos. No podemos obviar, por otro lado, la historia escrita que comparten los dos autores, un conjunto de cuatro textos de dedicatoria explícita que habremos de privilegiar ineludiblemente en nuestra lectura. Por la parte de Levinas, hay que citar «Tout autrement» (1973) y, por la parte de Derrida, «Violence et métaphysique» (1964), «En ce moment même dans cet ouvrage me voici» (1980) y Adieu (1997). Sin embargo, la necesaria inmersión en sus respectivos pensamientos que anunciábamos hace un instante nos exigirá extender nuestro corpus de estudio mucho más allá de los textos mencionados. Ello nos permitirá comprobar, asimismo, que las obras de cada uno de estos filósofos contienen una referencia más o menos constante al discurso del otro, aunque en ocasiones esa referencia se manifieste tan sólo en forma de huella. En nuestro recorrido se pone, además, a prueba, para acabar refutándola, la tesis del pretendido giro eticopolítico de la deconstrucción. Se trata de un punto especialmente relevante para este trabajo puesto que, con frecuencia, se ha querido interpretar ese supuesto giro como un acercamiento tardío del discurso derridiano al pensamiento de Levinas. La investigación realizada nos llevará a concluir que, si bien cabe reconocer cierta convergencia en el proyecto general de los dos autores y en algunos de los aspectos de su desarrollo, existen diferencias inconciliables entre ellos. Dichas diferencias vienen marcadas, principalmente, por la negativa de Levinas a renunciar a la noción de sentido, algo que, desde el punto de vista de la deconstrucción, no puede sino bloquear la apertura a la alteridad que constituye la preocupación fundamental de ambos pensadores. ; [eng] This research presents a comparative reading of the works of Jacques Derrida and Emmanuel Levinas. Our purpose is to measure exactly the convergences between them and conceptualize, as concisely as possible, their divergences. Instead of privileging the figure of the chiasmus, which has been often used to represent this complex relationship, we consider more helpful to use the Derridian concept of inheritance. Unlike the chiasmus, this concept does not suggest a casual meeting between their works; it understands each of them as an answer both faithful and unfaithful to the «call» of the other. Naturally, to carry out such a project we will have to analyse deeply enough the thoughts of these two philosophers. With this goal, we will take the concept of hospitality –the welcome of alterity– as a common interpretative framework. It will allow us to follow the development of their works and therefore make a careful comparison of their projects. Our reading also assesses some of the debates that have taken place among the critics of Derrida. In particular, we are talking about the issue of the alleged "ethical" or "political turn" of deconstruction that has been sometimes interpreted like a late approach to Levinas' thought –claims that we try to refute–. The whole research will lead us to conclude that, although some convergence must be recognized in the overall project of the two authors and in many aspects of its development, there are irreconcilable differences between them. Such differences may be reduced to the question of meaning: while Levinas will not renounce to this concept –since it is inherent to his project–, from the point of view of deconstruction the attachment to meaning implies that the opening to otherness becomes closed up.

The World Bank has been increasingly involved in reforming Latin America's education systems. However, compliance with World Bank directives varies greatly. Recent scholarship has made significant progress in fashioning an explanation for this variation by focusing on the presence of democracy. This article takes the literature a step further by identifying the mechanism by which democracy matters. Specifically, variations in executive authority are key factors in explaining the adoption of controversial World Bank directives. The authors argue that a government's ability to implement World Bank reforms and overcome popular dissent, if present, is a function of executive authority. They examine executive authority using several measures to test their hypotheses on a 20-year panel of 17 American states from 1980 to 2000. Results indicate that newly democratized governments and strong executives are indeed more successful in passing World Bank reforms.

Scholars have long suggested a relationship between democracy, capitalistic economies, and the protection of property rights. Yet this link has been contested by a variety of scholars. We test whether a relationship between property rights, measured as risk of expropriation of property, and measures of presidential authority, exists. Where institutional design presents presidents with the capacity and incentives to act on predatory desires, we expect an impact on property rights protections. The empirical results from 17 Latin American countries over a 15‐year time period suggest that executive authority helps explain changes in the risk of property expropriation in ways that regime type do not.Related Articles

Abstract
Background
Reducing the mortality burden associated with urban air pollution constitutes a public health priority, and evidence of unequal exposure and susceptibility across population subgroups is growing. Many European countries have implemented low emission zones (LEZs) in densely populated city centers. Although LEZs decrease air pollution exposure and health impacts, evidence is lacking on their impact across neighborhoods and socio-economic groups.

Objectives
The aim of this study was to evaluate the most equitable approach to implementing the second phase of the LEZ in Paris, France. We also present a literature review of the studies evaluating the benefits associated with LEZs in Europe.

Methods
A health impact assessment (HIA) was conducted to quantify changes in air pollution exposure and expected health benefits by socioeconomic group and neighborhood related to four hypothetical scenarios for the second phase of the LEZ based on French Deprivation Index scores. The study focused on NO2 and PM2.5 as air pollutants and evaluated the impact of the LEZ on the inequitable burden of childhood asthma and all-cause premature adult mortality. We also conducted an economic evaluation associated with the LEZ benefits on prevented deaths and asthma cases.

Results
The scenario with the largest LEZ perimeter and the most stringent vehicle standards prevented the highest number of cases and produced the most equitable distribution of health benefits, especially childhood asthma. It is expected that 810 deaths and 3200 cases of asthma could be prevented from the LEZ extension in this scenario. These results were distributed heterogeneously across three socioeconomic (SES) groups, most noticeably with asthma cases as 230, 180, and 210 cases were avoided per 100,000 inhabitants in high, medium, and low SES groups, respectively. We found substantial economic benefits associated with LEZ, with estimates ranging from €0.76 billion to €2.36 billion for prevented deaths. The benefits associated with asthma reduction ranged from €2.3 million to €8.3 million.

Discussion
Conducting HIAs with a focus on equity will further inform policy makers of the impact of LEZ models on air pollution, health, and environmental justice. Developing these systematic methods and applying them to future LEZs and other air pollution policies will increase their effectiveness to reduce the burden of ambient air pollution on society and the environment.

En un entorno económico donde los impuestos son una fuente esencial de financiamiento gubernamental surge la cuestión de como las cargas tributarias descienden la capacidad de las empresas para generar valor económico sostenible. Por ello, el objetivo de la investigación radicó en analizar las determinantes de la estructura de capital a través del modelo de mínimo cuadrado ordinarios para determinación de la creación de valor de las empresas manufactureras de Cotopaxi. Para ello, se utilizó un diseño metodológico con un enfoque cuantitativo, ya que, se analizó estados financieros. Como muestra de estudio se eligió a 15 empresas de la provincia que cumplían con los requisitos para proceder al análisis previo. Al realizar un análisis correlacional se evidenció que fueron contrastados frente al EVA. Los resultados manifestaron que tiene un alto nivel de significancia el factor tamaño de la firma de las empresas. Por otro lado, el factor rentabilidad fue todo lo contrario, esto corrobora que a medida que un indicador incrementa el otro decrece. Se concluyó que es importante considerar que para futuras investigaciones se debería analizar la composición de los estados financieros para establecer cuál es su estructura y como se modifica en tiempos de crisis económica.
