Mittelman reflects on his intellectual formation as a student at the University of East Africa, Kampala and, later, as a member of Makerere University's academic staff and researcher there as well as at universities in Tanzania, Mozambique, and South Africa. He sets his sights on engaging the global in ways that might strike a chord with CODESRIA colleagues. Here, he highlights his three lectures at the CODESRIA Institute, sharpens some of the formulations that he offered there, and addresses major intellectual puzzles in the Dakar proceedings.
