Western academics, politicians, and military leaders alike have labelled Russia's actions in Crimea and its follow-on operations in Eastern Ukraine as a new form of "Hybrid Warfare." In this book, Kent DeBenedictis argues that, despite these claims, the 2014 Crimean operation is more accurately to be seen as the Russian Federation's modern application of historic Soviet political warfare practices-the overt and covert informational, political, and military tools used to influence the actions of foreign governments and foreign populations. DeBenedictis links the use of Soviet practices, such as the use of propaganda, disinformation, front organizations, and forged political processes, in the Crimea in 2014 to the Warsaw Pact invasion of Czechoslovakia in 1968 (the "Prague Spring") and the earliest stages of the invasion of Afghanistan in 1979. Through an in-depth case study analysis of these conflicts, featuring original interviews, government documents and Russian and Ukrainian sources, this book demonstrates that the operation, which inspired discussions about Russian "Hybrid Warfare," is in fact the modern adaptation of Soviet political warfare tools and not the invention of a new type of warfare.
"What happens when we vote? What are we counting when we count ballots? Who decides what an election should look like and what it should mean? And why do so many people believe that some or all elections are rigged? Moving between intellectual history, literary criticism, and political theory, The Electoral Imagination offers a critical account of the decisions before the decision, of the aesthetic and imaginative choices that inform and, in some cases, determine the nature and course of democratic elections. Drawing on original interpretations of George Eliot and Ralph Ellison, Lewis Carroll and Kenneth Arrow, Anthony Trollope and Arthur Koestler, Richard Nixon and Jean-Jacques Rousseau, the Palm Beach Butterfly Ballot and the Single Transferable Vote, The Electoral Imagination works both to understand the systems we use to move between the one and the many and to offer an alternative to the "myth of rigging."--

An innovative book that provides fresh insights into the neglected field of remedies in both international and domestic human rights law. Providing an overarching two-track theory, it combines remedies to compensate and prevent irreparable harm to litigants with a more dialogic approach to systemic remedies. It breaks new ground by demonstrating how proportionality principles can improve remedial decision-making and avoid reliance on either strong discretion or inflexible rules. It draws on the latest jurisprudence from the European and Inter-American Courts of Human Rights and domestic courts in Australia, Canada, India, New Zealand, Hong Kong, South Africa, the United Kingdom and the United States. Separate chapters are devoted to interim remedies, remedies for laws that violate human rights, damages, remedies in the criminal process, declarations and injunctions in institutional cases, remedies for violations of social and economic rights and remedies for violations of Indigenous rights

Based on the needs of business, marketing and social science students, this book provides an accessible and easy-to-follow guide to survey data analysis. The book avoids the more usual statistics-driven perspective. Rather, it provides an intuitive feel for handling survey data by emphasising that data analysis is more about understanding the research objectives, what kinds of data have been collected, how quantitative data were generated by the process of measurement, how to create a data matrix and how to transform raw data before thinking about appropriate statistical calculations. The author begins by considering what data are, the different kinds of data that surveys generate, and the tripartite format of all quantitative data. The processes of measurement and the errors that may arise are carefully explained. Coverage of the creation and analysis of a data matrix using SPSS is then provided. The author then reviews what kinds of statistical procedure are required for what kinds of data and for what purposes. The book concludes by giving a review of strategies for coping with all the kinds of practical problems that arise in survey research. Reader-friendly throughout, Data Analysis: A Guide to Market and Social Research provides numerous worked examples, end-of-chapter questions and points for further discussion to help reinforce concepts learnt. A data diskette containing the worked examples in SPSS is also provided in the back of the book.
