Building on the European regional science literature, this article argues that the Canadian province of Ontario is emerging as a powerful North American region state. Underpinning this regional-international interface is the reality that roughly 45% of Ontario's GDP is now destined for US markets, nearly three times as large as Ontario's interprovincial exports. Correspondingly, Ontario is shifting its policy focus in the direction of creating "untraded interdependencies," ie, in the direction of privileging Ontario & Ontarians within this new geo-economic reality. The article then addresses the implications of this development for Ontario, for its sister provinces, & for the Canadian federation itself. 2 Tables, 3 Figures, 1 Appendix, 26 References.
