An examination of why Italy's governing Christian Democrat party was vulnerable at the 1976 Election. Stress is laid on Italy's persistent economic difficulties, on the major problem of maintaining law & order, & on the abortion issue as provoking an early election. There follows a detailed description of the election campaign, party by party, & an analysis of the results & their significance. The most likely short-term outcome of the election is a Christian Democrat government with at least tacit Communist support; in the longer term, the two major parties are likely to be drawn closer together, & this might be the prelude to greater political & governmental stability.
