Using an original and unique database of state charter school laws that we have developed, we analyze how state policymakers have incorporated two key values into state charter school laws: flexibility and accountability. We supplement this database with other state‐level measures to answer two specific questions: What factors influence the degree of flexibility and accountability in state charter school laws? How does the content of state charter school laws, and the different values those laws embrace, affect the formation of charter schools in the United States? Overall, we show that state political and contextual factors help account for the degree of flexibility, but not accountability, in state charter school laws. Further, we show that the degree of flexibility, accountability, and political and contextual factors influence the number of charter schools that form in the states.

A search of the psychological, technical, and promotional literature was conducted to compile information relevant to key, keyboard, and operator characteristics. The most recent and significant articles were discussed and evaluated. Where possible, general conclusions have been drawn to aid the keyboard designer.

An optional stopping experiment was performed in which the subject had to decide not only how much information to gather prior to making a two-choice decision, but also which of three information sources to consult. The cost of consulting these sources was varied systematically, with each source having a known, fixed diagnosticity. Two loss structures were used: (1) penalty for miss = penalty for false alarm, and (2) penalty for miss = 3 × penalty for false alarm. Results indicated subjects bought too little information relative to an optimal Bayesian model. The subjects indicated a reluctance to expend the resources required to obtain the best information available. Although subjects responded to the loss variables in the appropriate direction, they did not respond with sufficient magnitude to be mathematically optimal. Future research areas are suggested.

[EN] Background: Essential anticancer medicines are an indispensable component of multidisciplinary treatment of paediatric malignancies. A European Society for Medical Oncology (ESMO) study reported inequalities in the availability of anticancer medicines for adult solid tumours and provided a model for the present survey. The aim of this survey was to assess the accessibility of essential medicines used in paediatric cancer patients aged 0 to 18 years across Europe from 2016 to 2018. Methods: A list of medicines was drawn with input from the European Society for Paediatric Oncology (SIOP Europe) Clinical Research Council referring to the World Health Organization Model List of Essential Medicines for Children (WHO EMLc) 2017. A survey was sent to nominated national clinician and pharmacist rapporteurs and parent associations in up to 37 countries; answers were obtained from 34 countries. Results: The full survey list contained 68 medicines, including 24 on the WHO EMLc 2017. Health professionals reported that 35% of all medicines were prescribed off-label in at least one country and that 44% were always available in >90% of countries. Only 63% of the EMLc 2017 medicines were reported as always available. The main determinant of unavailability was shortages, reported for 72% of medicines in at least one country. Out-of-pocket costs were reported in eight countries. Twenty-seven percent of orally administered medicines were never available in childfriendly formulations. Parents detailed individual efforts and challenges of facilitating ingestion of oral medicines as prescribed. Inequalities in access to pain control during procedures were reported by parents across Europe. Conclusions: Children and adolescents with cancer in Europe experience lack of access to essential medicines. Urgent actions are needed to address shortages, financial accessibility, availability of safe age-appropriate oral formulations, and pain management across Europe. ; This work was supported by the EU Health Programme (2014-2020) in ...

[EN] Within the European Network for Cancer research in Children and Adolescents (ENCCA), SIOPE and the European paediatric haematology-oncology community have established a long-term sustainable Strategic Plan to increase the cure rate and the quality of survivorship for children and young people with cancer over the next ten years. The ultimate goal is to increase the diseaseand late-effect- free survival after 10 years from the diagnosis, and beyond. As a result of several initiatives to involve all stakeholders and ensure that all their points of view would be taken into account in the document, this long-term sustainable Strategic Plan has achieved a broad consensus, and will serve as the "European Cancer Plan for Children and Adolescents". ; This publication has received funding from the European Union's Seventh Framework Programme for research, technological development and demonstration under the project ENCCA (European Network for Cancer research in Children and Adolescents), grant agreement nr.
