Between the summer of 2019 and the summer of 2021, a violent discussion about trans rights took place in Spain. This paper argues that the discussion can be understood as an instance of 'social problems work', more specifically as part of a moral crusade or a moral panic episode. Implicit in this is the idea that there has been an over-reaction to trans recognition and trans equality laws, publicly presented as a major social problem. This paper also provides legal arguments against the fears voiced in the discussion, by summarizing relevant ECHR case-law that agrees with an alternative feminist account of trans rights that de-pathologizes gender-identity self-determination. The paper thus suggests that a 'cultural war' over gender identity has been ignited and has yet to be fully fought and won.

The notion that the risk problems confronting contemporary society are trans-scientific in character - that is, that while they can be posed to science, they cannot be solved by science alone - has gained currency since Alvin Weinberg coined the term over thirty years ago. His prescription in such circumstances - that recourse must be had to legal procedures in order to find an answer - perhaps invests law with more ability than it actually possesses to deal with such issues. What is it about law that ensures that such problems are not also trans-legal? This article considers this question by examining the relationship between science and law, between the realms of the factual and of the normative, in order to determine what happens when the two come into contact, or communicate, in the context of regulation or of litigation. Focusing on this crucial interface leads to the conclusion that traditional - formal and substantive - paradigms of law are ill adapted to cope with risk issues and that a procedural orientation of law is preferable. The question is then to choose among the leading alternatives available: Habermas's procedural paradigm based on the theory of communicative action or Teubner's reflexive law based on the theory of autopoiesis.
With many Asian countries experiencing increasing economic growth and globalization, infectious diseases that were once contained in certain pockets of the continent now proliferate throughout the continent. The recently publicized outbreaks of SARS, avian flu, and influenza are but a few examples of the growing number of mass infections affecting the Asian populace. Increased travel and tourism worldwide potentially expands the reach of these infectious diseases to a global scale. There is a pressing need for public health professionals worldwide to know and understand the variety of these infections, the methods through which they are transmitted, and the ways to control and prevent them.

In Lao People's Democratic Republic (PDR), we detected 7 patients infected with Centrocestus formosanus (1122 adult specimens) after praziquantel treatment and purgation, together with several other trematode species including Opisthorchis viverrini and Haplorchis taichui. The patients were all men, 2342 yr-of-age. Three subjects were from Vientiane Municipality and 1 each were from Khammouane, Saravane, Champassak, and Xiengkhouang Province. The patients had frequently eaten raw freshwater fish and were experiencing variable degrees of epigastric pain and indigestion accompanied by occasional diarrhea, although the relationship of these symptoms with C. formosanus infection was unclear. Centrocestus formosanus specimens were ovoid, 0.46 mm (0.410.52 mm) long, and 0.18 mm (0.160.20 mm) wide (n = 10) and were equipped with 32 circumoral spines on the oral sucker. The uterine eggs were 33.2 關m long (31.834.9 關m) and 18.5 關m wide (17.419.8 關m) (n = 20). Analysis of the nucleotide sequence of the 18S ribosomal RNA gene of our specimens (Laotian isolate) revealed 100% homology with that of an isolate from the United States reported in GenBank. Several species of freshwater fish collected from Xiengkhouang Province revealed a 17.0% prevalence (9 of 53 fish examined) for C. formosanus metacercariae. The results suggest that human C. formosanus infections have been masked by other trematode infections. ; open
