Too often, we are told that Russia plays a weak hand well. Russia ranks behind the US and China by traditional measures of power like GDP. Yet 25 years removed from its mid-1990s nadir, Russia has become a supremely disruptive force in world politics. How has Russia's resurrection happened and why are observers surprised? Kathryn E. Stoner assesses the revival of Russia and argues that we should look beyond traditional means of power to assess its real strength in international politics. Accounting for Russian domestic policies, Stoner explains how Russia maximizes its resources at home and abroad.

This book examines the economic bases of regional sovereignty movements in the Russian Federation from 1990–1993. The analysis is based on an original data set of Russian regional sovereignty movements and the author employs a variety of methods including quantitative statistical analysis, as well as qualitative case studies of Sverdlovsk and Samara oblasts using systematic content analysis of local newspaper articles. The central finding of the book is that variation in Russian regional activism is explained not by differences in economic conditions but by differences in the construction or imagination of economic interests; to put it in the language of other contemporary debates, economic advantage and disadvantage are as imagined as nations. In arguing that regional economic interests are inter-subjective, contingent, and institutionally specific, the book addresses a major question in political economy, namely the origin of economic interests. In addition, by engaging the nationalism literature, the book expands the constructivist paradigm to the development of economic interests

Examines the three major transformations that the country underwent from the early 1860s to 2000. The three transitions originated within different socio-economic settings, but have had a similar primary goal, namely the changing of the economy's ownership pattern in the hopes of providing a better basis for subsequent development

Rich in natural resources, straddling Europe and Asia, and home to markets of immense scale, Russia is an essential, critical player in an unprecedently complex global economy. Yet it has yet to fully exploit its unique position within this brave new world. Exploring the Future of Russia's Economy and Markets offers the first serious study of Russia's contemporary economic growth and economic aptitude. Based on the April 2017 conference "'New Reality' and Russian Markets" held at Harvard University and co-hosted by Harvard Davis Center for Russian and Eurasian Studies and RUDN University, Moscow, it brings together world-renowned thinkers to offer the latest empirical research on recent financial risks, institutional policies, and financial stability, all while weaving sound economic analyses around countercyclical expansionary macrotrends within the global market, current fiscal and monetary policies, and business cycles. It provides definitive technical insights into fintech, industrial policies and technological parks, TNCs, the oil and natural gas industry, and the impact of international sanctions on Russia's sustainable development. Cumulatively, the chapters gathered here demand that Russia look for alternative key drivers to get its economy going. The distinguished economists gathered here offer flexible bases for economic and financial stability that would foster sustainable economic development for Russia. Exploring the Future of Russia's Economy and Markets is essential reading for economists, policy makers, and students wishing to understand how Russia might take full advantage of its pivotal position within the world economy.

Russia Since 1980 recounts the epochal political, economic, and social changes that destroyed the Soviet Union, ushering in a perplexing new order. Two decades after Mikhail Gorbachev initiated regime-wrecking radical reforms, Russia has reemerged as a superpower. It has survived a hyperdepression, modernized, restored private property and business, adopted a liberal democratic persona, and asserted claims to global leadership. Many in the West perceive these developments as proof of a better globalized tomorrow, while others foresee a new cold war. Globalizers contend that Russia is speedily democratizing, marketizing, and humanizing, creating a regime based on the rule of law and respect for civil rights. Opponents counterclaim that Russia before and during the Soviet period was similarly misportrayed and insist that Medvedev's Russia is just another variation of an authoritarian 'Muscovite' model that has prevailed for over five centuries. The cases for both positions are explored while chronicling events since 1980

The article examines the fundamental changes in the foreign economic strategy of Russia in 2022 and evolution of foreign trade relations between the EU and the Russian Federation. The study hypothesis is that the new mechanism of «sanctions' interaction» between the EU and Russia is emerging. Moscow withstood the pressure of unprecedented restrictions, while Brussels has significantly reduced the competitiveness of its own economic and political space. This problem is particularly relevant because the EU developed a system for monitoring compliance with the adopted ten packages of sanctions, measures to stimulate the exchange of data between countries, and is finalizing the rules for interpreting and applying restrictive measures. It is identified that the EU and German initiatives had a significant negative impact on economic cooperation with Russia in 2022. The consequences of the complex pressure of the European Union on Russia and on their business are demonstrated. Particular attention is paid to the FRG, Russia's main foreign economic partner, that plays a major role in shaping the EU sanctions policy. The forecast for the development of relations is made. The results of calculations of new proportions of EU-Russian and German-Russian trade are presented. Structural shifts in key product groups are analyzed. Significant reduction in exports from the European Union of a number of industrial and technological goods is formed. It is determined that EU imports of energy resources from Russia increased significantly in value terms at the end of the year, but the physical volumes of export have significantly decreased. The development of economic cooperation in non-sanctioned countries of Central Asia and the South Caucasus in the long-term may serve as a "bridge" between the economic and political spaces of the EU and Russia. The matrix of corporate strategies of European companies in terms of presence in the Russian market was developed. It is substantiated that 40% of companies continue to work in Russia. It is concluded that "double risks" develop: for the economic relations of European and Russian companies in the EU economic space due to tightening control and for the remaining European companies in Russia, which are still under pressure from the media.

For a decade Russia has been dismantling communism and building capitalism. Describing a deeply flawed fledgling market economy, Capitalism Russian-Style provides a progress report on one of the most important economic experiments going on in the world today. It describes Russian achievements in building private banks and companies, stock exchanges, new laws and law courts. It analyzes the role of the mafia, the rise of new financial empires, entrepreneurs and business tycoons, and the shrinking Russian state. Thane Gustafson tells how the Soviet system was dismantled and the new market society was born. He argues that this new society is changing constantly, so that any assessment of success and failure would be premature. Identifying investment as vital to preserving Russia's status as a major industrial power, in his final chapter he examines the prospects for an economic miracle in Russia in the twenty-first century
