RESUMEN- Las frustradas aspiraciones de una incipiente burguesía, durante el último tercio del siglo XIX filipino, fueron favoreciendo una reacción nacionalista, sensible primero entre los miembros del clero autóctono y los intelectuales, aunque no se recurrió a la lucha armada hasta el último decenio. Figura emblemática del movimiento de emancipación, fusilado por los españoles en 1896, José Rizal, que preconizaba la vía de las reformas y de la legalidad, y no participó en la insurrección, sigue representando para los filipinos el héroe mítico de la lucha por la independencia.

The author analyzes the interplay between two opposing historical forces at work - liberalism versus traditionalism - in the 19th century Spain and the interaction between two Spains - Rizal's Spain and Rizal's Spanish Philippines. The study calls not only for a re-thinking of Jose Rizal and his political ideas, but also for a re-interpretation of Philippine history in the light of the continuity of the "democratic Republican" tradition in Spain since 1812. This essay focuses on the work of the Filipino ilustrado, José Rizal, and his interest in the prevailing debate over whether the sexual behaviour of a culture reflects its level of civilisation. Spanish apologists for colonial rule had persistently argued that the Filipinos remained in many ways a backward and primitive people and delighted in alleging in support of their case that lasciviousness and promiscuity were widespread in the Philippines. These allegations caused deep offence to Rizal and his fellow propagandistas, who wanted, as a matter of patriotic honour, to repudiate such colonialist slurs. Through an examination of a selected sample of Rizal's annotations to Antonio de Morga's Sucesos de las Islas Filipinas, the author explores the ways in which Rizal sought to prove the civilized nature of his people through the assertion of female sexual chastity and sexual honour.

The rewriting of the history of the Philippines from the standpoint of the Filipinos is today one of the major subjects of research in the history of that country. A perspective on Philippine history from the standpoint of the Filipino people themselves and free from the bias of the colonialists, was first attempted in the era of the Propaganda Movement, 1882–1896. In this paper, I should like to probe into the process of the formation of the historical view of the Filipino people taken by the greatest thinker of the Propaganda Movement era, José Rizal, and into the notion of the national solidarity of the people of the Philippines (i. e., their national consciousness), which that historical view heightened.

Los acontecimientos sucedidos en el paraninfo de la Universidad de Salamanca el 12 de octubre de 1936 entre el escritor Miguel de Unamuno y el militar José Millán Astray poseen una importancia simbólica como reflejo de una fractura ideológica española acentuada por el conflicto civil. Su recreación literaria ha silenciado, sin embargo, el fondo del enfrentamiento dialéctico, y las heridas todavía abiertas de una España que no había saldado cuentas de su debacle colonial, y errores políticos como el fusilamiento de José Rizal. The article focuses on the Spanish policy in the Phillippines during the years previous to the Tagal rebellion (1896-1897), according to the report that ''Capitán General" Eulogio Despujol sent to the "Ministerio de Ultramar" on the causes that moved him to order the exile of José Rizal. The study deals, also, whit the main differences between the liberal cabinet policy and the conservative policy, and with the political targets designed by the last "Capitanes Generales" of the Phillippines. ; El trabajo ofrece una aproximación a la política española en Filipinas en los años previos a la rebelión tagala y al cambio de soberanía, partiendo de la memoria que el Capitán General de Filipinas Eulogio Despujol envió al Ministerio de Ultramar dando cuenta de las razones que motivaron el destierro de Rizal en 1892. Se intentan analizar, así mismo, las diferencias más sustantivas entre las políticas de los ministros liberales y conservadores, así como las líneas de actuación de los últimos capitanes generales del Archipiélago.

This article examines themes of revolution, responsibility, and colonial suffering in José Rizal's El Filibusterismo. The second and more confounding of Rizal's two novels, El Filibusterismo is vague about the conditions necessary for anti-colonial revolution. The article argues that this vagueness was deliberate and that it constituted an invitation to a collective reflection on revolutionary responsibility. Using Derrida's concept of the "aporia of responsibility," it shows that Rizal's novel negotiates the tension between individual accountability and collective action. In conjuring a collective impasse, Rizal left a space for the democratic nationalism that he envisioned for the Philippines.
