The article is devoted to the analysis and assessment of the modern state of Rus­sian religious studies as a research field, scientific discipline and educational program of higher education in the context of digital transformations of culture and society. The ways of reaction of the religious studies community to the re­thinking of the principles of rationality and the production of scientific knowl­edge are described. The issues of the autonomy of religious studies in relation to other socio-humanitarian disciplines are discussed, it is stated that in the Russian context, it is possible to talk about disciplinary unity only in the educational sphere. The features of the current educational standards in religious studies are considered, the change in the number of budget places, including, in comparison with the direction of "Theology", a significant reduction in the number of gradu­ating universities is recorded. The problems of professional orientations of reli­gious scholars and the expansion of career trajectories are discussed. Promising areas of religious studies are outlined: cognitive approaches, an appeal to envi­ronmental and bioethical problems. The authors justified the relevance of the de­velopment of the field of mediology of religion as a religious studies analysis of the processes of mediatization of religious ideas and practices in a changing me­dia sphere.

This volume contains the texts from the symposium on the occasion of the 10th Anniversary of the M.A. Programme Intercultural Theology. The contributions address the challenges and consequences of an intercultural approach in academics as well as in the churches and in society. Since globalisation has significantly changed the face of contemporary Christianity in the 21st century, the task of doing theology has become more complex. The cultural, geographic and denominational varieties of Christianity worldwide challenge the traditional Western face of academic Christian theology and demand new and global forms of theological thinking across lines. Intercultural Theology seeks to embrace these dynamics with a constructive dialogue, opening up new spaces of collaborative thinking and academic reflection.

The phenomenology of religion and cognitive religious studies are perceived in scientific circles as two fundamentally different strategies for studying religion, since the reductionist basis of cognitive religious studies does not agree with the anti-reductionism of the phenomenological tradition. Despite this difference, the article substantiates the idea that these traditions have intersections, the pres­ence of which helps to take a fresh look at the study of religion in the past and present. Firstly, it is the place that both programs occupy in religious studies, their claim to be key strategies for understanding religion as a whole. Secondly, it is a common philosophical basis: both traditions ideologically go back to the basic principles of Kantian epistemology. Thirdly, it is evolutionism, the whole system of argumentation of cognitive religious studies is explicitly based on it, implic­itly it is present in all classical theories of phenomenologists of religion. Fourth, a two-process model that asserts the existence of two cognitive processes that generate two corresponding levels of religious life: intuitive and reflexive. The presence of these intersections allows to consider the logic of the study of re­ligion in a different way: the difference of research strategies on the principle of reductionism/anti-reductionism is not sufficiently heuristic. It is concluded that the commonality of ideas about the two levels of religion, shared by both tradi­tions, confirms that phenomenologists and cognitive scientists, moving in com­pletely different ways, apparently discovered a fundamental feature of the "hu­man" dimension of religious life.

School and university teachers of Religious Studies are caught between presenting the irreducible complexity of their subject matter, and the practicalities of selection and simplification that pedagogy entails. The entanglements of culture, politics and ideology within RS, along with the colonialist and hegemonic histories of the subject, make questions of just representation especially acute. How can educators be inclusive and selective? The central strand of my argument concerns the 'translation' between the academic study of religion in universities and religious education in schools. I argue that this translation necessarily involves 'pedagogical reduction' – the selections and simplifications that teaching involves – and that we must carefully consider the basis upon which we form our pedagogical reductions. Establishing that basis depends on interdisciplinary dialogue between scholars of religion, scholars of education, and educators more generally. I argue that there is a conspicuous disconnection between critical scholarship in the scientific study of religion(s) and critical scholarship in the 'educational sciences.' I justify the need for, and outline the nature of, dialogue between these scholarly communities through consideration of four interrelated pedagogical concepts that I offer as preliminary outlines towards the development of more robust and systematic criteria for developing a religious education that is simultaneously inclusive and selective.
