U.S. experience in raising the armed forces has resulted in persistent political and social tensions. Individual freedom has seldom been held subordinate to national security interests. Executive control and legislative oversight have frequently been in conflict, but with little judicial challenge to either branch. Finally, national controls have assured a continuing influence upon state manning and operation of the militia. Despite inherently conflicting objectives, the resulting balance has provided armed forces sufficient to preserve the nation while largely guaranteeing individual freedoms.
AbstractThis study used qualitative and quantitative method in determining the leadership preferences of the military stakeholders in the Philippines. The qualitative approach was used to determine the stakeholders' ideal military leadership of the randomly chosen 20 stakeholders in Baguio City and in Benguet. The qualitative result shows that the ideal military leadership of the stakeholders is authentic, servant, transformational, and transactional leadership. These results were the basis in constructing the data gathering tool in the quantitative method, wherein the purpose of the quantitative method is to determine the leadership preferences of the AFP stakeholders in the country from Luzon to Mindanao. Quantitative method reveals that military stakeholders preferred a military officer who carries out transformational, transactional, servant, and authentic leadership, respectively. Keywords: Stakeholder theory, authentic, transformational, servant, transactional, and military leadership

Since World War II we have felt compelled for the first time in our history to maintain large standing forces. It is technology though, not numbers, that provides our edge in the continuing military competition with the Soviet Union. Acquiring advanced weapons is a complex process greatly complicated by our governmental system, which intentionally fragments political power. Mechanisms for improving the efficiency of the weapons acquisition process, however, threaten the very values that we seek to protect with our military power.

"There is a wide range of exciting and satisfying military careers available without a college diploma. The military offers thousands of specialized jobs, and the majority of those have direct civilian counterparts. In the military, you earn a steady paycheck from the moment you sign up. If you join at age 18, you can serve a full 20 years and retire at age 38! What's more, the U.S. armed forces offer excellent educational benefits. After your tour of enlistment is over, a program called the Montgomery GI Bill provides financial support for you to continue your education. As a member of the U.S. armed forces, you are part of an organization that is important in the world. You're helping to defend the national security of the United States."--Provided by publisher

Introduction: Natural disasters is one of the real threats which cause the loss of life, property, and refugees. Background Problems: The role of the Indonesian National Armed Forces (TNI) in natural disaster management becomes an interesting thing to study when natural disasters occur in Indonesia. Novelty: This article reveals the analysis result of the implementation of TNI's principles in disaster management, especially in the following regions: Palu, Sigi and Donggala (Pasigala), Central Sulawesi Province. Research Methods: The research was conducted using qualitative research methods. The collected data was analyzed using qualitative data analysis techniques. Finding/Results: Based on the results of the study, it was concluded that the role of TNI's leadership style was very prominent to fill the vacancies of Regional Leaders in certain areas experiencing disaster. The support of TNI personnel in natural disaster management cannot be separated from the implementation of 11 TNI leadership principles, which consist of: Takwa, Ing Ngarsa Sung Tulada, Ing Madya Mangun Karsa, Tut Wuri Handayani, Waspada Purba Wisesa, Ambeg Parama Arta, Prasaja, Satya, Gemi Nastiti, Belaka, and Legawa. The application of these principles can be seen in emergency response situations, where TNI plays an important role, in which their instructions were conformed by the community. In disaster mitigations, they evacuated victims, rebuilt worship places, looked around for logistical sources for the community, were incharged for possible criminal actions, such as eradicated looting acts, arrested the perpetrators and handed them to the local Police. Thus, it can be said that the leadership of TNI has succeeded in handling natural disasters in Pasigala, Central Sulawesi. It can be then recommended that the Indonesian Government and stakeholders should improve the quality of training and education for leadership and disaster management by implementing the leadership principles of TNI, as well as synergizing with TNI in disaster management
