The article applies a comparative perspective to assess the onset of the two 'successful' eighteen-century revolutions – the American and the French. The Boston events of March 1770 are compared with those of Paris in July 1789: in both cases 'the people' faced the soldiers, riots and politically generated violence led to bloodshed, but the subsequent actions of the insurgents showed a marked difference in understanding the sense of justice and the ways of promoting revolutionary discourse. Boston patriots relied on the English-based system of common law, were ready to condemn their own radicals and did not wish plebeian justice to prevail. They hoped for a perestroika, not for a revolution. Las rebeliones populares modificaron las relaciones de fuerza en Sudamérica. Hubo mejoras sociales, conquistas democráticas y frenos a la agresión imperial. Pero se acentuó el extractivismo exportador y la balcanización comercial. El progresismo quedó afectado por ensayos neo-desarrollistas que no lograron canalizar las rentas agro- exportadoras hacia actividades productivas. La derecha avanza ahora en la región ocultando los magros resultados de sus gobiernos. La preeminencia de la primarización no uniformó los procesos políticos de la última década. El término "pos-liberal" oscurece las continuidades con la etapa precedente. ; The popular revolts changed the balance of power in South America. There were social improvements, democratic gains, and the imperial aggression was stopped. But an increase in the export oriented extractivism and trade balkanization has been observed. Progressivism was affected by neo-developmentalist rehearsals that failed to channel agro-export revenues to productive activities. The right wing now advances in the region hiding the poor results of their administrations.The preeminence of primarization didn ́t standardize the political processes of the last decade. The term "post-liberal" obscures the continuities with the previous period.

Forty years after the military coup that bloodied Chile during the years of military dictatorship, the country is still splitted with a society which is still in a traumatic situation. In this paper we have worked with audio-visual sources, which we call Video Format Documents (VFD), produced from the sixties onwards. This article is based on sources that allow us a deeper understanding of the society in which they were produced; a society −as it is said by a character of one of the most successful films in Chile−, divided into pears and apples.

Han pasado cuatro décadas desde que el Ejército chileno se sublevó contra el Gobierno de Salvador Allende. Los años pasan, pero las memorias individuales y de grupo de ese período ―entendidas como discursos sobre el pasado¿ continúan siendo beligerantemente contradictorias, como evidencia la controversia todavía existente entre las figuras de Allende y Pinochet. Esa realidad nos preocupa en la medida que los jóvenes que no vivieron los años de plomo se adscriben ¿de manera poco crítica¿, a la memoria dominante en su espacio vital próximo. Construir una memoria para el futuro, incrementando la dosis de conocimiento histórico de los jóvenes chilenos, podría favorecer el reconocimiento de las diferencias políticas internas hasta hacerlas compatibles con una convivencia democrática de calidad.
