International audience ; Background: The genus Spelaeomyia includes four African species considered as being cavernicolous: Spelaeomyia darlingi, Spelaeomyia mirabilis, Spelaeomyia emilii and Spelaeomyia moucheti. Despite a potential role in Leishmania major leishmaniasis transmission in Mali, no molecular studies and only few morphological studies have addressed relationships between species of Spelaeomyia.Methods: Specimens of Sa. moucheti were collected in two different sites in Gabon. Spelaeomyia emilii and Sa. darlingi specimens came from Gabon and Mali. Specimens of Sa. mirabilis were collected in the Democratic Republic of Congo and Gabon. All specimens were caught using CDC miniature light traps, then dissected, both heads and genitalia were kept for morphological analysis and the rest of the bodies were kept for molecular processing and analyses.Results: Some unidentified males are associated to Sa. moucheti females using molecular tools and are described for the first time. A new morphological feature is observed on the spermathecae of the female and new drawings are provided. For the first time a phylogenetic analysis is carried out on rDNA and mtDNA markers and it shows that Sa. moucheti is the sister species of Sa. mirabilis.Conclusions: Spelaeomyia moucheti is the sister species of Sa. mirabilis. This result is in agreement with the sharing of morphological characters between these closely related species. Moreover, these two species are not as cavernicolous as literature previously indicated. They were caught in open rainforest in Gabon.

International audience ; Pest risk analyses (PRAs) are conducted to determine whether an organism is a pest and whether and how it should be regulated. Estimation of the potential area of establishment and pest spread are key factors of this analysis. Tools for modelling and mapping of these key factors have to be quick and easily applicable for a wide variety of organisms with limited data for parameterization. For this purpose, a dispersal kernel model based on a 2Dt-distribution had been developed in a European Union project (PRATIQUE). The aim of the present study was the evaluation of this spread model hitherto tested on insects, plants, fungi and nematodes in order to determine its applicability to bacterial pests. Therefore, the potential distribution and spread of kiwifruit bacterial canker Pseudomonas syringae pv. actinidiae in Europe was investigated based on climatic suitability and host plant availability. The results of the modelling were compared with the spread history of the pest in Europe. It is shown that this generic spread model can also be applied to a bacterial pest. ; Des analyses de risque phytosanitaires sont conduites afin de déterminer si un organisme est nuisible, s'il doit être réglementé, et comment il doit l'être. International audience ; The monotypic genus Afridiolorryia Kaźmierski was collected from the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Two new species belonging to this genus are described here both collected from Psychotria capensis (Eckl.) Vatke (Rubiaceae), in the Eastern Cape Province, South Africa. A key to all the species of the genus as well as the Tydeidae species found during this survey is given.

International audience ; The prevalence and regional distribution patterns of seven different honeybee viruses, i.e. Acute bee paralysis virus (ABPV), Sacbrood virus (SBV), Black queen cell virus (BQCV), Deformed wing virus (DWV), Kashmir bee virus (KBV), Chronic bee paralysis virus (CBPV), and Israeli acute paralysis virus (IAPV) were investigated using reverse transcription PCR (RT-PCR) analyses. Bee samples were collected in 82 apiaries located in 20 different districts of Croatia, mainly from bee colonies with various health problems. 9.75 % of investigated samples (apiaries) proved to be infected with CBPV, while ABPV, BQCV, SBV, and DWV were found in 10.97 %, 29.26 %, 40.24 %, and 95.12 % of apiaries, respectively. No samples tested positive for KBV and IAPV. Thus, the prevalences of BQCV, ABPV, SBV, and CBPV were generally lower in Croatia compared to other European Union member states, whereas the prevalence of DWV was similarly high. The possible reasons for these differences are discussed. This study provides the first molecular evidence for the presence of honeybee viruses in Croatian honeybees.

International audience ; The worldwide maintenance of the honeybee has major ecological, economic, and political implications. In the present study, electromagnetic waves originating from mobile phones were tested for potential effects on honeybee behavior. Mobile phone handsets were placed in the close vicinity of honeybees. The sound made by the bees was recorded and analyzed. The audiograms and spectrograms revealed that active mobile phone handsets have a dramatic impact on the behavior of the bees, namely by inducing the worker piping signal. In natural conditions, worker piping either announces the swarming process of the bee colony or is a signal of a disturbed bee colony.

International audience ; We sampled the mites present on individuals of Rhynchophorus phoenicis collected at different sites in the Kisangani region of the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Two species belonging to two families (Uroactiniidae and Urodinychidae) were identified: Centrouropoda almerodai and Uroobovella phoenicola. This is the first time that C. almerodai has been reported on R. phoenicis. The number of mites per adult may reach 39 and differs between sexes and regions.

International audience ; Understanding the fundaments of colony losses and improving the status of colony health will require cross-cutting research initiatives including honeybee pathology, chemistry, genetics and apicultural extension. The 7th framework of the European Union requested research to empirically and experimentally fill knowledge gaps on honeybee pests and diseases, including 'Colony Collapse Disorder' and the impact of parasites, pathogens and pesticides on honeybee mortality. The interactions among these drivers of colony loss will be studied in different European regions, using experimental model systems including selected parasites (e.g. Nosema and Varroa mites), viruses (Deformed Wing Virus, Black Queen Cell Virus, Israeli Acute Paralysis Virus) and model pesticides (thiacloprid, τ-fluvalinate). Transcriptome analyses will be used to explore host-pathogen-pesticide interactions and identify novel genes for disease resistance. Special attention will be given to sublethal and chronic exposure to pesticides and will screen how apicultural practices affect colony health. Novel diagnostic screening methods and sustainable concepts for disease prevention will be developed resulting in new treatments and selection tools for resistant stock. Research initiatives will be linked to various national and international ongoing European, North- and South-American colony health monitoring and research programs, to ensure a global transfer of results to apicultural practice in the world community of beekeepers.
