This paper intends to demonstrate on the basis of a case study that rural people's access to modern goods and services is not necessarily a relentless source of deculturalisation, because it sometimes allows a better management and valorisation of the main characteristics of the rural space. Despite socio-economic unrest and successive changes of political regimes that took place in Romania during the last century, the human communities within the Arges foothills have defended with dignity their traditional material and spiritual values, passing them down from generation to generation. In the medium and long-term, the valorisation of the Romanian rural space, in general, and of that belonging to the Arges foothills, in particular, will imply the creation of a balance between the valuable cultural potential and the quality of life of the inhabitants, who are the keepers of rural cultural heritage. At present, the best thing to do to pass on the traditions of this area is to proudly accept the affiliation to this geographical space. This is true not only for the permanent inhabitants of rural settlements, but mostly for those who have left the countryside to carry it in their minds and souls. In our opinion, this fact is a pre-requisite for preventing the loss of material and spiritual values of this cultural-historical space.

The article examines the evolution of Romanian politics in the period 1990-2008, discussing the level of participation, the effective number of parties, the electoral performances of the main political forces, the types of government and their parliamentary support.

The study and interpretation of the media discourse devoted to the family as a universal human value are urgent tasks of modern linguistics. The object of the research presented in the article is the economic discourse about the family of modern Russian, Vietnamese and Danish popular social-and-political national publications, and the purpose is to describe the linguistic and cultural characteristics of this discourse by identifying its value – semantic content expressed in the peculiarities of the actualization of the image of the family. Using the methods of content analysis, comparison of dictionary definitions of the words semya, gia dinh, familie and their distributive analysis, the features of the image of the family in the economic discourse of Russian and foreign media were found. In the Russian media, the image of a family is actualized by lexical means, which indicate the presence of children in it, its need for material support and social protection, the need to protect traditional family values, units that actualize the image of a large family. In the Vietnamese media, the image of the family is formed by lexical means, which characterize the problems of financial distress of families, determining the family's belonging to the working class, actualizing the importance of family support by its members and their responsibility for its well-being. In the Danish media, the image of the family is formed by lexical means, which indicate the presence of a family business, characterizing the financial well-being of families, actualizing the image of the royal family.

This article explores both the ethical and emotional issues that emerge while conducting qualitative research as a Romanian migrant researcher among Romanian migrants settled in the UK. I specifically look at the transformative role played by emotions in the research process and how knowledge is generated by a permanent state of 'objective reflexivity' employed by the researcher and self-reflexivity on the part of the participants. While most emotions and ethical considerations transpire mainly from the interaction and the relationship established between the researcher and the participants, I highlight other aspects of fieldwork which also carry ethical decisions and emotional implications, even though not so evident at first sight. These include the relation between the researcher and the topic of the research, the terminology used, the language choice during the interview, and any potential legal aspects. I conclude that juggling both ethics and emotions does not compromise the scientific standard of the research, but rather adds a new dimension to doing research in one's own social context.
