Fauna Europaea provides a public web-service with an index of scientific names (including important synonyms) of all extant multicellular European terrestrial and freshwater animals and their geographical distribution at the level of countries and major islands (east of the Urals and excluding the Caucasus region). The Fauna Europaea project comprises about 230,000 taxonomic names, including 130,000 accepted species and 14,000 accepted subspecies, which is much more than the originally projected number of 100,000 species. Fauna Europaea represents a huge effort by more than 400 contributing taxonomic specialists throughout Europe and is a unique (standard) reference suitable for many user communities in science, government, industry, nature conservation and education. The Diptera-Brachycera is one of the 58 Fauna Europaea major taxonomic groups, and data have been compiled by a network of 55 specialists. Within the two-winged insects (Diptera), the Brachycera constitute a monophyletic group, which is generally given rank of suborder. The Brachycera may be classified into the probably paraphyletic 'lower brachyceran grade' and the monophyletic Eremoneura. The latter contains the Empidoidea, the Apystomyioidea with a single Nearctic species, and the Cyclorrhapha, which in turn is divided into the paraphyletic 'aschizan grade' and the monophyletic Schizophora. The latter is traditionally divided into the paraphyletic 'acalyptrate grade' and the monophyletic Calyptratae. Our knowledge of the European fauna of Diptera-Brachycera varies tremendously among families, from the reasonably well known hoverflies (Syrphidae) to the extremely poorly known scuttle flies (Phoridae). There has been a steady growth in our knowledge of European Diptera for the last two centuries, with no apparent slow down, but there is a shift towards a larger fraction of the new species being found among the families of the nematoceran grade (lower Diptera), which due to a larger number of small-sized species may be considered as taxonomically more challenging. Most of Europe is highly industrialised and has a high human population density, and the more fertile habitats are extensively cultivated. This has undoubtedly increased the extinction risk for numerous species of brachyceran flies, yet with the recent re-discovery of Thyreophoracynophila (Panzer), there are no known cases of extinction at a European level. However, few national Red Lists have extensive information on Diptera. For the Diptera-Brachycera, data from 96 families containing 11,751 species are included in this paper.

INTRODUCTION: Sentinel lymph node biopsy (SLNB) is a diagnostic procedure developed in the 1990s. It is currently used to stage patients with primary cutaneous melanoma, provide prognostic information and guide management. The Australian Clinical Practice Guidelines state that SLNB should be considered for patients with cutaneous melanoma >1 mm in thickness (or >0.8 mm with high-risk pathology features). Until recently, sentinel lymph node (SLN) status was used to identify patients who might benefit from a completion lymph node dissection, a procedure that is no longer routinely recommended. SLN status is now also being used to identify patients who might benefit from systemic adjuvant therapies such as anti-programmed cell death 1 (PD1) checkpoint inhibitor immunotherapy or BRAF-directed molecular targeted therapy, treatments that have significantly improved relapse-free survival for patients with resected stage III melanoma and improved overall survival of patients with unresectable stage III and stage IV melanoma. Australian and international data indicate that approximately half of eligible patients receive an SLNB. METHODS AND ANALYSIS: This mixed-methods study seeks to understand the structural, contextual and cultural factors affecting implementation of the SLNB guidelines. Data collection will include: (1) cross-sectional questionnaires and semistructured interviews with general practitioners and dermatologists; (2) semistructured interviews with other healthcare professionals involved in the diagnosis and early definitive care of melanoma patients and key stakeholders including researchers, representatives of professional colleges, training organisations and consumer melanoma groups; and (3) documentary analysis of documents from government, health services and non-government organisations. Descriptive analyses and multivariable regression models will be used to examine factors related to SLNB practices and attitudes. Qualitative data will be analysed using thematic analysis. Recently, a Salmonella Typhi isolate producing CTX-M-15 extended spectrum β-lactamase (ESBL) and with decreased ciprofloxacin susceptibility was isolated in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. We have selected bacteriophages that show strong lytic activity against this isolate and have potential for phage-based treatment of S. Typhi, and Salmonella in general.

This randomized trial compared the effects of prolonged exposure therapy (10 sessions over 2 weeks vs 8 weeks) vs present-centered therapy vs minimal contact on posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptom severity among active duty military personnel.

The taxonomic position of members of the Mycobacterium abscessus complex has been the subject of intensive investigation and, in some aspects confusion, in recent years as a result of varying approaches to genetic data interpretation. Currently, the former species Mycobacterium massiliense and Mycobacterium bolletii are grouped together as Mycobacterium abscessus subsp. bolletii. They differ greatly, however, as the former M. bolletii has a functional erm(41) gene that confers inducible resistance to macrolides, the primary therapeutic antimicrobials for M. abscessus, while in the former M. massiliense the erm(41) gene is non-functional. Furthermore, previous whole genome studies of the M. abscessus group support the separation of M. bolletii and M. massiliense. To shed further light on the population structure of Mycobacterium abscessus, 43 strains and three genomes retrieved from GenBank were subjected to pairwise comparisons using three computational approaches: verage ucleotide dentity, enome to enome istance and single nucleotide polymorphism analysis. The three methods produced overlapping results, each demonstrating three clusters of strains corresponding to the same number of taxonomic entities. The distances were insufficient to warrant distinction at the species level, but met the criteria for differentiation at the subspecies level. Based on prior erm(41)-related phenotypic data and current genomic data, we conclude that the species M. abscessus encompasses, in adjunct to the presently recognized subspecies M. abscessus subsp. abscessus and M. abscessus subsp. bolletii, a third subspecies for which we suggest the name M. abscessus subsp. massiliense comb. nov. Aims: Left atrial (LA) fibrosis can be identified by late gadolinium enhancement cardiac magnetic resonance (LGE-CMR) in patients with atrial fibrillation (AF). However, there is limited information about anatomical fibrosis distribution in the left atrium. The aim is to determine whether there is a preferential spatial distribution of fibrosis in the left atrium in patients with AF. Methods and results: A 3-Tesla LGE-CMR was performed in 113 consecutive patients referred for AF ablation. Images were post-processed and analysed using ADAS-AF software (Galgo Medical), which allows fibrosis identification in 3D colour-coded shells. A regional semiautomatic LA parcellation software was used to divide the atrial wall into 12 segments: 1–4, posterior wall; 5–6, floor; 7, septal wall; 8–11, anterior wall; 12, lateral wall. The presence and amount of fibrosis in each segment was obtained for analysis. After exclusions for artefacts and insufficient image quality, 76 LGE-MRI images (68%) were suitable for fibrosis analysis. Segments 3 and 5, closest to the left inferior pulmonary vein, had significantly higher fibrosis (40.42% ± 23.96 and 25.82% ± 21.24, respectively; P 60 years was significantly associated with increased LA fibrosis [95% confidence interval (CI) 0.19–8.39, P = 0.04] and persistent AF approached significance (95% CI −0.19% to 7.83%, P = 0.08). Conclusion: In patients with AF, the fibrotic area is preferentially located at the posterior wall and floor around the antrum of the left inferior pulmonary vein. El derrame de 11 900 barriles de petróleo en la refinería La Pampilla (Ventanilla, Callao) contaminó 98 sitios (playas, acantilados, puntas y otras formaciones costeras) causando una oleada de efectos. Surgiendo la problemática, ¿cuáles son los efectos y respuestas emergentes del derrame de petróleo en las condiciones de vida de los pescadores afectados? La metodología fue cualitativa con diseño fenomenológico-narrativo. Se utilizaron como técnicas de investigación (y recolección de información) la observación participante, entrevistas semi estructuradas, y la recopilación de noticias periodísticas. El muestreo fue no probabilístico, guiado por la observación (muestra intencional). Las entrevistas y observación se realizaron en Ancón (muelles) y Ventanilla bajo consentimiento informado. El análisis fue temático (mediante la codificación inductiva) de las entrevistas y observaciones en el software Nvivo. Fruto de los temas emergentes, se recopiló noticias periodísticas y literatura existente para triangular la información. Dentro de los resultados se identificaron tres efectos del derrame de petróleo en las condiciones de vida de los pescadores artesanales: i) contaminación del hábitat marino y recursos hidrobiológicos, ii) pérdida de trabajos o desempleo, iii) afectación a la salud. Por otro lado, se encontraron tres respuestas emergentes: i) fortalecimiento organizacional, ii) trabajos emergentes, y iii) redes de solidaridad. Se concluye que frente a los efectos surgen respuestas emergentes de carácter complejo, y en cierto grado contradictorios, insostenibles durante el tiempo y que no logran balancear la afectación multidimensional vigente. Por ello, urgen soluciones y propuestas a nivel institucional-político-legislativo (por parte del Estado peruano) y empresarial-económico (por parte del Grupo Repsol del Perú S.A.C) que sean sostenibles en el tiempo, eficaces y multidimensionales.

Public health travel restrictions (PHTR) are crucial measures during communicable disease outbreaks to prevent transmission during commercial airline travel and mitigate cross-border importation and spread. We evaluated PHTR implementation for US citizens on the Diamond Princess during its coronavirus disease (COVID-19) outbreak in Japan in February 2020 to explore how PHTR reduced importation of COVID-19 to the United States during the early phase of disease containment. Using PHTR required substantial collaboration among the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, other US government agencies, the cruise line, and public health authorities in Japan. Original US PHTR removal criteria were modified to reflect international testing protocols and enable removal of PHTR for persons who recovered from illness. The impact of PHTR on epidemic trajectory depends on the risk for transmission during travel and geographic spread of disease. Lessons learned from the Diamond Princess outbreak provide critical information for future PHTR use.

We search for the baryon acoustic oscillations in the projected cross-correlation function binned into transverse comoving radius between the SDSS-IV DR16 eBOSS quasars and a dense photometric sample of galaxies selected from the DESI Legacy Imaging Surveys. We estimate the density of the photometric sample of galaxies in this redshift range to be about 2900 deg−2, which is deeper than the official DESI emission line galaxy selection, and the density of the spectroscopic sample is about 20 deg−2. In order to mitigate the systematics related to the use of different imaging surveys close to the detection limit, we use a neural network approach that accounts for complex dependences between the imaging attributes and the observed galaxy density. We find that we are limited by the depth of the imaging surveys that affects the density and purity of the photometric sample and its overlap in redshift with the quasar sample, which thus affects the performance of the method. When cross-correlating the photometric galaxies with quasars in the range 0.6 ≤ z ≤ 1.2, the cross-correlation function can provide better constraints on the comoving angular distance DM (6 per cent precision) compared to the constraint on the spherically averaged distance DV (9 per cent precision) obtained from the autocorrelation. Although not yet competitive, this technique will benefit from the arrival of deeper photometric data from upcoming surveys that will enable it to go beyond the current limitations we have identified in this work. © C 2021 The Author(s). ; PZ would like to thank John Helly for his help modifying TWOPCF.
