Abstract
This paper addresses the localization of video games into minority languages by presenting a qualitative study which reports on interviews with professional game localizers and translation scholars from bilingual territories in Spain: the Balearic Islands, the Basque Country, Catalonia, Galicia, and the Valencian Community. The article argues that sociolinguistics has been largely ignored within the emerging field of video game translation, and the implications of and the need to adapt video games into minority languages deserves further investigation. Semi-structured, in-depth interviews were held with 5 experts aiming to recall their perceptions and views of the current situation of game localisation in Spain. The analysis of the interviews suggests there is a mismatch between the current reality of video game localisation, which is clearly market-driven, and the scenario for language diversity developed in the European Union and in Spain in the last few decades.

Individual, micro-level attitudes towards nonprofit organizations (NPOs) can have many potential determinants. In this study, we explore the impact of three categories of potential determinants of attitudes towards NPOs: Political cleavages (the cultural integration vs. demarcation cleavage and the economic integration vs. demarcation cleavage); religiosity and spirituality; and values (the survival vs. self-expression value dimension). Based on a representative survey in Switzerland, we estimate the impact of those factors for five different attitudinal dimensions and six different NPO types. The Bayesian model estimates show that all three categories of determinants have small to moderate impact. The effects of religiosity, spirituality, the self-expression value dimension, and of economic integration are generally positive. The effects of the survival value dimension and of cultural demarcation are generally negative, with the exception of the NPO type of professional associations.

Abstract:During the later years of the Great Depression, birth control advocates in the Birth Control Federation of America (BCFA) developed a program to distribute birth control among California's migrant workers. In order to reach the migrants, these advocates reached out to the Farm Security Administration (FSA), a New Deal agency that was establishing its own programs to "rehabilitate" migrant families. Though the top levels of the FSA were wary of becoming publicly involved with the birth control movement, they lent their tacit support to the program. The resulting "semiofficial" program to bring birth control to California's poor relied heavily on the support of local administrators and professionals. This article examines the on-the-ground operations of this project; in doing so, it challenges the traditional top-down narrative of the New Deal and explores how the forging of alliances at the local level reshaped the political landscape.

Social work graduate education is responsive to and reflective of larger environmental forces, including economic and job market trends, regulations by diverse organizations, and student interests. A national online survey of macro social work educators (n=208) and macro social work practitioners (n=383) explored their perceptions of the intersections between these forces and graduate social work education. Findings indicate that while there remains a consistent level of support for and inclusion of macro social work within MSW programs from both groups, macro practitioners identified a concurrent experience of negative perceptions, attitudes, and experiences toward macro social work education while in their graduate programs. We suggest that social work programs seek out opportunities to integrate macro practice content and field experiences into their curriculum, so that students can be better equipped to respond to the complex systemic challenges they will encounter while in professional practice.

Patient-centered care and health services' co-production are the cornerstones of the health care system of the future. These constructs rely on the reconceptualization of the patient as a co-deliverer of care. While studies about the intrinsic value-added of health services' co-production are prominent, the risks of value co-destruction attached to patient involvement have been widely neglected. In an attempt to fill this gap, this paper draws on the 'health literacy' perspective to conceptually explore the 'dark side' of health services' co-production. Value co-destruction is understood as a two-way street, where both the health care professionals and the patients are likely to walk, either intentionally or unintentionally. Individual and organizational health literacy are proposed as two essential ingredients of the recipe for effective health services' co-production, reducing the risks of value co-destruction in health services' provision.

This article describes the process of collaborative writing between teachers and researchers which constitutes the final phase (results dissemination) of a qualitative-collaborative research project. This study was developed in Cantabria (Spain) with the purpose of promoting and analysing student voice experiences in various schools. The final process of collaborative writing was organised in two parts: one oral, based on an epistemic interview and a second moment of written production based on a shared writing of the report. This process of collegial writing facilitated a new reading and reappropriation of the described student voice experiences by the participants. It also constitutes a way of disseminating the research which challenges traditional social research methodology. The process of collaborative writing presented here has resulted in a book of teacher narrative reports which compiles some of these student voice experiences and is fundamentally aimed at other education professionals, such as teachers or school counsellors.

The article explores how spaces aimed at improving accountability in health systems are socially produced. It addresses the implications of an initiative to promote patient involvement in government-funded research in the context of a large cancer research network in England. We employ a socio-spatial theoretical framework inspired by insights from Henri Lefebvre and Judith Butler to examine how professional researchers, doctors and patients understand and perform accountability in an empirical context. Our data reveal fundamental tensions between formally required and routinely enacted dimensions of accountability as these are experienced by patients. Consequently, our analysis argues for a need to challenge abstract, professionalized discourse about accountability in health services by acknowledging embodied spaces of representation, in which patients themselves can contribute to making participatory accountability a reality. We suggest that such a shift will provide a more rounded appraisal of patient experiences within health research, and health systems more widely.

Crisis has become such a ubiquitous word that its discriminatory power is diminished
across various disciplines. It challenges the word-concept relationship
inasmuch as it is associated with a host of partner words that imbue crisis
with divergent meanings. Not least, it stretches between major upheavals and
minor disturbances, often employed with calculating or rhetorical dramatic
effect. This article explores both professional and vernacular usages of "crisis"
and notes the distinction between theories of crisis and ideologies of crisis.
It then turns to examining two domains closely linked to the language of
crisis: Marxist analyses of capitalism, and legitimation problems. The latter is
explored particularly through Seymour Martin Lipset and Jürgen Habermas.
The role of crisis as filtered through different ideological families is indicated.
Finally, the relationship between the tipping-point connotations of crisis and
the finality drive of political decisions is considered.

Abstract

Objective: The aim of the research was to construct a theoretical model of competences of managers employed in health care institutions in the Warmińsko-Mazurskie Voivodeship.

Methodology: The theoretical list of competences was based on the literature of the subject and the results developed during the workshop session with postgraduate students in the scope of management of healthcare entities. All respondents (266 persons) were health care workers and held managerial positions at various levels of organizations.

Findings: On the basis of the obtained results it can be stated that in the key competency model of the efficient manager dominates professional competence in the field of organization and management. These competences were also diagnosed with the greatest deficiencies that hinder effective work.

Value Added: Results of the research enable the introduction of appropriate curricular content into the educational model of potential healthcare managers, hence improving management quality of medical organizations.

AbstractIn Tijuana, Mexico, middle‐class desires for an open border with neighboring San Diego, California, are riddled with tensions and contradictions that derive from the way in which local ideals of citizenship are entangled with securitized US entry protocols: legal access to the US is basic for local belonging. This article examines the limitations that haunt both these tijuanenses' nostalgic memories of free passage in the past and their projects to reestablish it in the future. The most glaring contradiction, I argue, lies in the forgetting of the predicament of those without authorization to cross the border, even as expedited legal passage is invested with political hopes for a more just future. The article focuses on young, highly binational professionals, whose socioeconomic and legal privilege puts them in the vanguard of the tensions of an emerging global regime of citizenship to which "flexible" borders are key.

Defining and assessing child abuse and maltreatment has long been a challenge to both researchers and practitioners in social work. Taking an intersectional perspective, this article explores the meaning of class and ethnicity in professionals' investigations and assessments in child protection referrals. Overall, findings show that class power was particularly actualised for caseworkers facing parents with high social status. In these cases, the parents often resisted the investigation and the caseworkers therefore had difficulties in disclosing or defining the abuse. In comparison, culture was often made relevant in cases involving minority ethnic parents, where abuse was often actualised as corporal punishment. This practice tended to be seen as a cultural issue rather than related to social problems. In these cases, class power was not articulated. The article sheds light on intersections of class and ethnicity that may affect social work practice with children at risk of abuse and maltreatment.

By examining children as symbols within a Norwegian context and, further, as icons in a larger Western context, the article shows how these ways of understanding children give the Norwegian child protection system both its strength and its potential to misuse power. It is clear that, today, there exist in Norway children whose experiences contravene hegemonic understandings of children. Many of these children encounter child protection professionals who seek to provide them with childhoods in keeping with the Norwegian consensus about how children should be and how childhood should be lived. The situations of such children are often interpreted with reference to two universal images: one involving the discourse of children's rights; and the other involving the discourse of psychosocial rehabilitation. These images need to be changed in order to fit the realities of children's own subjectivity, opportunities and material conditions of life.

This article explores the impact of the binary configuration of disabled bodies as opposite and unequal to able bodies, and whether or not contemporary bodybuilding provides a space where this dualism can be overcome. Drawing on life history interviews with Dan, a professional wheelchair bodybuilder, we consider how his hyper-muscular upper body may position him as a supercrip and thereby reinforce bodily and gender norms. Simultaneously, Dan's powerful, disabled body and a competitive context that applies standard judgement criteria across all bodies potentially subverts this normative configuration. We reflect on the contradictions engendered by Dan's corporeality by drawing on notions of the bodybuilder as body-garde involved in a process of enfreakment that disrupts and transcends contemporary bodily ideals. Here, variable self-reflexive bodybuilding projects can accommodate contingent conceptualisations of perfection, including disability, with implications for disabled bodies and identities more broadly.

Anthropology's response to the West African Ebola epidemic was one of the most rapid and expansive anthropological interventions to a global health emergency in the discipline's history. This article sets forth the size and scale of the anthropological response and describes the protagonists, interventions, and priorities for anthropological engagement. It takes an inclusive approach to anthropological praxis by engaging with the work of nonanthropologist "allies," including qualitative researchers, social workers, and allied experts. The article narrates how the concept of "anthropology" came to serve as a semantic marker of solidarity with local populations, respect for customary practices and local sociopolitical realities, and an avowed belief in the capacities of local populations to lead localized epidemic prevention and response efforts. Of particular consideration is the range of complementary and conflicting epistemological, professional, and critical engagements held by anthropologists. The article also discusses how to assess anthropological "impact" in epidemics.

Policy makers in the UK are looking to technology such as telehealth as a solution to the increasing demand for long term health care. Telehealth uses digital home monitoring devices and mobile applications to measure vital signs and symptoms that health professionals interpret remotely. The take up of telehealth in community health care is slow because there is uncertainty about its use. Findings from a qualitative study of community healthcare show that community nurses are managing uncertainty through a complex set of negotiations. Drawing on Strauss' concept of negotiated order the study found three key areas of negotiation, which are 'supported care interdependencies', 'nursing-patient relationships', and 'risk management'. The relational, communicative and collaborative working practices of nurses shape these areas of negotiation and the resulting negotiated order. This article focuses on the perspectives of nurses in negotiating telehealth with their patients.
