AbstractReligious sentiments have become a potent tool for political elites, altering national identities and citizenship criteria. This manipulation, driven by majoritarian ideologies, has marginalized religious minorities, leading to discrimination, violence, and legal persecution against them. Hindu, Islamic, and Buddhist nationalisms seem to collectively erode secular democracy in South Asia. Moreover, right‐wing populist leaders, notably Modi in India and the Rajapaksas in Sri Lanka, have merged religious nationalism with authoritarian political orientations posing a challenge to democratic foundations and impacting significantly on the dynamics of state and societal relations. This is the context in which this World Affairs 2024 special issue delves into the relationship(s) between religion, politics, and authoritarianism in the South Asian region. It examines the evolving "religion‐politics" nexus or "complex" to explicate the relationship between religion and authoritarianism, particularly with respect to authoritarian governments mobilizing religion as a readily available resource for popular political mobilization, legitimization, and power consolidation. India's BJP employs Hindutva ideology to marginalize minorities, Bangladesh's regime uses Islam for political legitimacy, and Sri Lanka's Sinhala‐Buddhist nationalism fosters exclusionary policies. By fostering social and cultural polarization, this fusion of authoritarianism with religious nationalism poses a serious challenge to the secular state. The articles in this special issue explore these themes comprehensively, delving into the ideological foundations of political decisions and their consequences for marginalized communities. By shedding light on this multifaceted interplay, the collection offers valuable insights into South Asia's sociopolitical landscape, serving as a vital resource for scholars, policy makers, and global observers seeking to understand the region's complex dynamics.

Die Autoren thematisieren auf der Basis von eigenen Quellenforschungen in drei Abschnitten die gegenseitigen Beziehungen zwischen der katholischen Kirche und der Arbeiterbewegung. Der erste Teil analysiert die Einstellungen der Sozialisten und der sozialistischen Parteien in verschiedenen europäischen Ländern zur katholischen Religion und Kirche um die Jahrhundertwende bis 1914 und nennt die Gründe für das differenzierte Verhältnis der sozialistischen Bewegung zu Religionsfragen, zum Klerus sowie zur katholischen Kirche. Der zweite Teil charakterisiert die Einstellung dieser Kirche zur Arbeiterfrage und zur sozialistischen Bewegung und konzentriert sich dabei vor allem auf die offizielle Stellungnahme der höchsten Instanzen dieser Kirche bis zum Jahre 1988. Der dritte Teil versucht am polnischen Beispiel die Wirkung der katholischen Kirche und den Einfluß des religiösen Engagements der Arbeiter als Mitglieder der Arbeiterbewegung auf ihre Haltungen und Verhaltensweisen vom Ende des 19. Jh. bis zur Gegenwart darzustellen. Im Vergleich zu anderen katholischen Ländern Europas weisen die polnischen Arbeiter eine sehr starke und beständige Bindung an die Religion und die katholische Tradition auf, wobei diese bis zum Ausbruch des Zweiten Weltkrieges als ein das politische Leben der Arbeiter stimulierender und organisierender Faktor eine geringe Rolle gespielt hat. Erst in der Solidarnosc-Bewegung von 1980-81 kam der Katholizismus in den politischen Protesten zum Vorschein. (ICK)

Der Autor geht der Frage nach, wie die katholische Kirche in den USA zu einem öffentlich agierenden, kollektiven Akteur wurde, der sich zu gesellschaftlichen wie politischen Fragen äußert und dabei zum Teil in deutliche Opposition zum amerikanischen protestantischen Mainstream tritt. Die katholische Kirche geht seiner These zufolge nicht völlig im amerikanischen Prinzip des Denominationalismus auf, das auf der Trennung von Staat und Kirche sowie einer individualistischen Spiritualität beruht. Es lässt sich vielmehr ein distinkter kulturell-religiöser Beitrag des Katholizismus zu den Grundlagen der US-amerikanischen Gesellschaft feststellen, der insbesondere im Bereich der Sozialpolitik und in Fragen sozialer Gerechtigkeit zum Ausdruck kommt. Am Beispiel des Engagements der katholischen Kirche zu sozialpolitischen Fragen lässt sich zeigen, dass dieses auf vielfältigen organisatorischen, sozialen und kulturellen Voraussetzungen beruht. Der Autor stellt zunächst das Konzept der Zivilreligion vor und beschreibt den Ort der Katholiken innerhalb dieses national-religiösen Rahmens. Er skizziert ferner die organisatorische Entwicklung des Katholizismus im 19. Jahrhundert sowie die Bedingungen, die die katholische Kirche zu einer öffentlichen Religion in der Gesellschaft der Vereinigten Staaten werden ließen. Er kontrastiert schließlich das katholische Kirchenverständnis mit dem protestantischen und zieht daraus einige Schlussfolgerungen zum Status des Katholizismus innerhalb der amerikanischen Kultur. Whilst the Olympic Movement states that politics have no place in sport, political events have nonetheless exerted a significant effect on modern Olympic Games. Three of the most 'political' Olympic Games are undoubtedly Berlin, 1936; Mexico, 1968; and Munich, 1972.

This article analyses the use of religion in Indonesian elections. It fundamentally argues that religion has been utilized by both secular and religious politicians to boost their electoral gain. Focusing on national and local elections in the past five years of Indonesian politics, this study suggests that religion is a significant instrument in the electoral decision-making process, both from the perspective of voters and candidates. Much of the data in writing this article derive from my current research project funded by the Indonesian Ministry of Research, Technology and Higher Education. Other data come from leading survey institutes, particularly Lembaga Survey Indonesia (LSI), Saiful Mujani Research and Consulting (SMRC) and Indikator Politik Indonesia.

AbstractThis research examines the influences of artificial intelligence and socioeconomic factors on religious freedom across 20 countries from 2000 to 2022. Employing a detailed model that integrates both specific effects related to individual countries and annual changes, our study offers an extensive empirical analysis of how artificial intelligence relates to religious freedom. The results indicate a notable negative impact of artificial intelligence on religious freedom. Furthermore, the study sheds light on key factors that affect religious freedom, uncovering a positive correlation with elements such as economic growth, political stability, and education levels. However, it was also observed that increased digitalization correlates negatively with religious freedom. These conclusions are reinforced by findings from the system-generalized method of moment estimation, which strongly support our initial results. Consequently, this study establishes that the relationship between artificial intelligence and religious freedom is intricate and shaped by a variety of socioeconomic factors. Our findings emphasize the necessity for thoughtful consideration of the broader societal impacts of artificial intelligence, especially regarding essential human rights like religious freedom.

This book analyses the Uyghur community, presenting a brief historical background of the Uyghurs and debating the challenges of emerging Uyghur nationalism in the early 20th century. It elaborates on key issues within the community, such as the identity and current state of religion and worship. It also offers a thoughtful and comprehensive analysis of the Uyghur diaspora, addressing the issue of identity politics, the position of the Uyghurs in Central Asia, and the relations of the Uyghurs with Beijing, notably analyzing the 2009 Urumqi clashes and their long term impact on Turkish-Chinese relations.
