This dissertation examines a mode of photographic practice in contemporary India marked by intimate, long-term engagement between artist and subject. I argue that the aesthetic of intersubjectivity embodied in this work lays claim to a sophisticated, progressive politics of gender and alterity through attention to complex negotiations of social hierarchy within contemporary India. In exploring the under-examined role of photography in the development of recent South Asian art, I further argue that this work anticipates the participatory paradigm that came to prominence in South Asia in the early 2000s, and that the unique history of photographic practice in the subcontinent opened significant possibilities for more substantially relational engagement between artist and subject. Building on this history allowed the three photographers at the heart of my project to develop a form of quiet activism, exemplary within the trajectory of contemporary art in South Asia.My analysis is grounded in the work of three Delhi-based photographers: Sheba Chhachhi (b. 1958), Dayanita Singh (b. 1961), and Gauri Gill (b. 1970). Each embraces a mode of social outreach across boundaries of cultural difference over long periods of time, often more than a decade. Chhachhi began her work with women activists, and later explored the lives of female sadhus (Hindu religious renunciates). Singh photographed Mona Ahmed—a member of the highly insular hijra (transgender/eunuch) community in South Asia, and later focused on the equally insular communities of India's social and economic elite. Gill pursued relationships with several rural communities in Rajasthan, and spent more than eighteen years photographing girls and their families as they negotiated harsh conditions of survival often beyond the purview of the state. This dissertation proposes a framework for understanding the intersubjective aesthetic embodied in these works on the basis of three interrelated qualities: a long temporal duration that enables complex representations of time within the work; a struggle for personal and cultural recognition on the part of both photographer and subject within South Asia's complex social hierarchy; and ethical agency on the part of the photographer to represent her subjects responsibly and bear witness to the complexity of their lives.

BackgroundPerson-centered care during childbirth is recognized as a critical component of quality of maternity care. But there are few validated tools to measure person-centered maternity care (PCMC). This paper aims to fill this measurement gap. We present the results of the psychometric analysis of the PCMC tool that was previously validated in Kenya using data from India. We aim to assess the validity and reliability of the PCMC scale in India, and to compare the results to those found in the Kenya validation.MethodsWe use data from a cross-sectional survey conducted from August to October 2017 with recently delivered women at 40 government facilities in Uttar Pradesh, India (N = 2018). The PCMC measure used is a previously validated scale with subscales for dignity and respect, communication and autonomy, and supportive care. We performed psychometric analyses, including iterative exploratory and confirmatory factor analysis, to assess construct and criterion validity and reliability.ResultsThe results provide support for a 27-item PCMC scale in India with a possible score range from 0 to 81, compared to the 30-item PCMC scale in Kenya with a 0 to 90 possible score range. The overall PCMC scale has good reliability (Cronbach alpha = 0.85). Similar to Kenya, we are able to group the items in to three conceptual domains representing subscales for "Dignity and Respect," "Communication and Autonomy," and "Supportive Care." The sub-scales also have relatively good reliability (Cronbach alphas range from 0.67 to 0.73). In addition, increasing scores on the scale is associated with future intentions to deliver in the same facility, suggesting good criterion validity.ConclusionsThis research extends the PCMC literature by presenting results of validating the PCMC scale in a new context. The psychometric analysis using data from Uttar Pradesh, India corroborates the Kenya analysis showing the scale had good content, construct, and criterion validity, as well as high reliability. The overlap in items suggests that this scale can be used across different contexts to compare women's experiences of care, and to inform and evaluate quality improvement efforts to promote comprehensive PCMC.

Yet while their representations have influenced the perception of Muslims up until the present day, the interwar press discourse has remained remarkably under-studied. This thesis tries to fill that gap and draws attention to the diversity of newspaper representations: How did popular European newspapers frame Muslims in the 1920s and 1930s? Which frames were used for different Muslim-related topics? And to what extent did national contexts matter in this regard? To answer these questions, I examine the French and Dutch newspaper framing of three key themes: mosques, the pilgrimage to Mecca and the position of Muslim women. France and the Netherlands both had colonial empires with a large number of Muslim subjects, yet adopted different approaches for dealing with religion and colonialism. A quantitative content analysis of over 1,400 articles is used to systematically identify the news frames. I then zoom in on individual articles to understand the social, cultural, political and historical context in which the texts were produced. This thesis shows that the interwar newspaper discourse was rich and complicated. Seemingly contradictory representations of Muslims co-existed throughout the 1920s and 1930s. French and Dutch representations reflected the national contexts in which they were produced. Yet despite some notable differences, the French and Dutch press largely framed Muslims in similar ways, which suggests the existence of a European discourse that transcended national boundaries. This thesis puts forward three imperialist discursive strategies that dominated the interwar press discourse on Muslims: exoticism, criticism and appropriation. These discursive strategies often seemed contradictory at the surface and led to very different arguments. However, all three of them offered substantial support for the civilising mission and, consequently, the continuation of European imperialist rule over Muslim societies.

International audience ; Our study concerns the correlation between the perception of negative emotions and discursive productions to express them. Our study is based on 26 transcribed oral interviews to be analyzed with Lexico3 (13 men and 13 women). We study the way in which healthy volunteers react verbally to the conditioned production of negative emotions after viewing the government realized video stop jihad, broad casted on television after the 2015 attacks. Interviews were collected between November 2016 and February 2017 through out the COREV 1 project framework (understanding verbal violence in reception). At the same time, following an identical protocol, we showed another "neutral" video to the same people in order to have a control group. All the subjects saw both videos, but in different orders, after 11hours of intervals. According to our methodology of analysis with Lexico3 we were able to extract the linguistic data allowing to have an over view of the emotional feelings perceived by the volunteers after viewing each neutral or violent video and to propose a synthetic card of them. The analysis was conducted with three tools for statistic alanalysis of textual data proposed by Lexico3:search for specificity according to the partitions using the PCLC tool (Main Lexicometric Characteristics of the Corpus), the concordances, the graphs of ventilation by partition. The over all analysis of the results shows firstly that the emotions are distributed according to the nature of the videos (neutral video: positive emotions and /or neutral-violent video: negative emotions) and that the violent video provokes a quantity of speech longer than the neutral. Then, if the intensity of perceived emotions seems to differ according to the person wehere show it also is globally correlated to the order of diffusion of the videos. The legal blood morphine concentration limit for driving is 20 μg/L in France/Poland/Netherlands and 80 μg/L in England/Wales. There is no guidance as to the morphine dose leading to this concentration. Aim: The in silico (computed) relationship of oral morphine dose and plasma concentration was modelled to provide dose estimates for a morphine plasma concentration above 20 and 80 μg/L in different patient groups. Design: A dose–concentration model for different genders, ages and oral morphine formulations, validated against clinical pharmacokinetic data, was generated using Simcyp®, a population-based pharmacokinetic simulator. Setting/participants: Healthy Northern European population parameters were used with age, gender and renal function being varied in the different simulation groups. In total, 36,000 simulated human subjects (100 per modelled group of different ages and gender) received repeated simulated morphine dosing with modified-release or immediate-release formulations. Results: Older age, women, modified-release formulation and worse renal function were associated with higher plasma concentrations. Across all groups, morphine doses below 20 mg/day were unlikely to result in a morphine plasma concentration above 20 μg/L; this was 80 mg/day with the 80 μg/L limit. Conclusion: This novel study provides predictions of the in silico (computed) dose–concentration relationship for international application. Individualised morphine prescribing decisions by clinicians must be informed by clinical judgement considering the individual patient's level of impairment and insight irrespective of the blood morphine concentration as people who have impaired driving will be breaking the law. The aim of the work is to analyze gender parity as a national interest of the modern state and to give recommendations on the implementation of gender equality as a national interest. It is noted that gender equality is one of the indicators of the democratization of society, the level of its development. As a consequence, gender parity is one of the national interests of a sovereign modern state. The main criteria of democracy are, in particular, the political and legal equality of all citizens regardless of gender, their social activity, participation in the life of the state, in solving public problems. Equal access to political resources of men and women is one of the priorities for the modernizing state.It is at the present stage of the development of the Ukrainian state, when the formation of political culture and the intensive development of political institutions are underway, it is necessary to find mechanisms for ensuring gender equality as a national interest of the modern state.To implement gender parity as a national interest, a system of practical recommendations on mechanisms for ensuring gender equality was proposed – the Gender Integration Program. Саме на сучасному етапі розвитку української держави, коли йде формування політичної культури та інтенсивний розвиток політичних інститутів, необхідно віднайти механізми забезпечення ґендерної рівності як національного інтересу сучасної держави.Для реалізації ґендерного паритету як національного інтересу держави запропонована система практичних рекомендацій щодо механізмів забезпечення ґендерної рівності – Програма ґендерного інтегрування. This dissertation explores four major themes in my life: childhood, body image, relationships, and teaching. Using memoir to theorize my life experiences, I examine issues of femininity, agency, oppression of women voices and spirits in the South, place, patriarchy, and gender norms that contribute to social, cultural, and political issues. To theorize my experience I build upon a wide array of Critical Feminist Work, such as: Living a Feminist Life (Ahmed, 2017), Gender Trouble, Giving an Account of Oneself (Butler, 1990, 2005), The Second Sex (De Beauvoir, 1987), Existential Encounters for Teachers (Greene, 1967), Feminism is for Everybody (hooks, 2015), and Sounds of Silence Breaking (Miller, 2004). These theorists contribute to my understanding of Critical Feminist Theory as they illustrate the beliefs and passions their work. Memoir allows me to invent the truth through fictionalizing. To compose my memoir I particularly refer to the works of Didion (2005), Karr (1995), Smith (1994), and Welty (1984). I also delve into the literatures espousing the idea of place as curriculum is affirmed in the works of Casemore (2008), Kincheloe and Pinar (1991), and Whitlock (2007). Currere, or lived experiences as curriculum, validates memoir as methodology in the work of Morris (2015). The challenges I have faced writing memoir are emotional and psychological. As I reached back toward the past, my present was overcome with old pain made fresh by memory work. Writing academically about my personal experiences has also been challenging, since I am usually less emotionally connected to the content of academic writing. I have also struggled with personal issues during the dissertation process, which, at times, threatened my ability to focus and produce work at my critical best. To complete the dissertation will be a miracle achievement in lieu of the life that it has been encapsulated within. My hope is that through the self-doubt, immobilizing fear of meeting expectations, and life-consuming demands that I become a deeper thinking, less insecure, more fulfilled person with heightened awareness.

This dissertation consists of four independent research papers. All four papers include their own abstracts, introductions, references, and appendices, and can be read individually. The first paper of this dissertation (co-authored with Prof Manfred Königstein) is titled "Comparing Capitalism and Socialism: A Laboratory Experiment". In this paper we compare a capitalist and socialist market in a laboratory experiment. We find that the socialist market reaches only about 75% efficiency whereas the capitalist market is near 100%. Paper 2 titled "Improving Efficiency in Socialism: A Laboratory Experiment" investigates the effect, political bias in the price-setting committee of a socialist market, has on market efficiency. The findings indicate that bias in the constitution of the price-setting committee affects trade price and profit distribution, but has no effect on efficiency and trade quantity. Paper 3 is titled "Female Labour Force Participation in Urban and Rural Cameroon: An Empirical Study". This paper is motivated by the fact that, although there has been a huge number of studies done on the determinants of female labour force participation worldwide, to the best of my knowledge, only two has been done in Cameroon. Binomial logit regression analysis revealed that some of the statistically significant determinants of female labour force participation in urban and rural Cameroon are age, number of children in the household ages 5 and under, and region of residency. Marital status was also a key predictor in rural, but not urban Cameroon. The results also reveal that there is an urban/rural residency gap in female labour force participation. To explore this further I employ a decomposition analysis. The decomposition analysis reveals that only 36% of this difference is accounted for by differences in the characteristics of women in the urban compared to their counterparts in the rural areas. Paper 4 titled "Is Sibling Gender Composition a Good Instrumental Variable for Fertility in Cameroon?" seeks to determine if sibling gender composition is a good instrument for fertility in Cameroon. The result of this study shows that sibling gender composition is a poor instrument for fertility in Cameroon.

The fall of the Qing dynasty seemed more and more likely, and the presence of the foreign (people, goods, ideas) on the imperial soil aroused confl icting reactions: shame and pride, the desire to emulate and the desire to rekindle "traditional" culture(s), as well as the evidence of the necessity of rapid modernization, at least in the technical fi eld. Stretched between these overlapping poles, cinema as a technical development and as a new form of entertainment appeared very quickly as a formidable way to get to know the West, as well as a medium to be appropriated by local standards. Early movies made by the Lumière Company were travelling to China, and it was easy to understand the clamor made by the depiction of contemporary Europe. BACKGROUND: Maternal and child undernutrition have adverse consequences for pregnancy outcomes and child morbidity and mortality, and they are associated with low educational attainment, economic productivity as an adult, and human wellbeing. 'Nutrition-sensitive' agriculture programs could tackle the underlying causes of undernutrition. METHODS/DESIGN: This study is a four-arm cluster randomised controlled trial in Odisha, India. Interventions are as follows: (1) an agricultural extension platform of women's groups viewing and discussing videos on nutrition-sensitive agriculture (NSA) practices, and follow-up visits to women at home to encourage the adoption of new practices shown in the videos; (2) women's groups viewing and discussing videos on NSA and nutrition-specific practices, with follow-up visits; and (3) women's groups viewing and discussing videos on NSA and nutrition-specific practices combined with a cycle of Participatory Learning and Action meetings, with follow-up visits. All arms, including the control, receive basic nutrition training from government community frontline workers. Primary outcomes, assessed at baseline and 32 months after the start of the interventions, are (1) percentage of children aged 6-23 months consuming ≥ 4 out of 7 food groups per day and (2) mean body mass index (BMI) (kg/m2) of non-pregnant, non-postpartum (gave birth > 42 days ago) mothers or female primary caregivers of children aged 0-23 months. Secondary outcomes are percentage of mothers consuming ≥ 5 out of 10 food groups per day and percentage of children's weight-for-height z-score 70%) proportion of Scheduled Tribe or Scheduled Caste (disadvantaged) households. A process evaluation will assess the quality of implementation and mechanisms behind the intervention effects. A cost-consequence analysis will compare incremental costs and outcomes of the interventions. DISCUSSION: This trial will contribute evidence on the impacts of NSA extension through participatory, low-cost, video-based approaches on maternal and child nutrition and on whether integration with nutrition-specific goals and enhanced participatory approaches can increase these impacts. Background: There is a substantial body of evidence supporting the association between maternal active smoking during pregnancy and child development, but the association between prenatal exposure to environmental tobacco smoke (ETS) and early child development has not been well documented. This cross-sectional study examines the association between prenatal exposure to ETS and the development of children in their first two years of life. Methods: We interviewed the primary caregivers of 446 children under two years old in rural Guizhou Province, China. Based on self-reported assessments about whether the mother was exposed to ETS during pregnancy, we divided the children into the ETS-exposed group or the non-exposed group. Sociodemographic information was collected through a questionnaire. The cognitive, language, motor, and socioemotional abilities of children were assessed using the Bayley Scales of Infant Development III (BSID-III). A multivariate linear regression model adjusting for confounding variables was used to estimate the association of interest. Results: About 60% of mothers experienced ETS exposure during pregnancy. Cognitive and language scores were lower among children in the ETS-exposed group. When adjusting for characteristics of the child, the mother, the household, and village fixed effects, prenatal exposure to ETS was associated with lower cognition scores (&minus ; 3.41 ; 95% confidence interval (CI): &minus ; 6.39 to &minus ; 0.42 ; p = 0.03) and language scores (&minus ; 3.01 ; 95% CI: &minus ; 5.39 to &minus ; 0.09 ; p = 0.04). Frequency of prenatal exposure to ETS was also negatively associated with language development (&minus ; 0.48 ; 95% CI: &minus ; 0.87 to &minus ; 0.09 ; p = 0.02) before children reached two years old. Conclusions: Prenatal exposure to ETS is negatively associated with the cognitive and language development of rural young children within their first two years of life. The government should take action to raise public awareness about the negative effects of tobacco use, with an emphasis on the protection of pregnant women and their children, in order to carry through comprehensive smoke-free laws in rural areas, while also increasing tobacco taxation.

Protection of public health from zoonoses directly or indirectly transmitted by animals to humans is of utmost importance. Yersinia enterocolitica is widely spread in the environment and animal populations, which poses a threat for people to get infected with yersiniosis. Objective. To assess epidemiologic patterns of yersiniosis in Vilnius County. Tasks of the study. To assess relevance of yersiniosis in a group of intestinal tract infections transmissible through food and water in Lithuania and the European Union; to identify epidemiologic patterns of yersiniosis in Lithuania and Vilnius County in a period of 2005-2015. Material and methods. A descriptive epidemiological analysis was conducted. The data of Division for Prevention and Control of Communicable Diseases of Vilnius Public Health Centre, the Centre for Communicable Diseases and AIDS, the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control, the European Food Safety Authority, and the Statistics Department of Lithuania have been used. A model of brokenstick regression (segmented regression), Fisher's exact test, the Pearson's and Spearman's correlation coefficients were applied for the analysis. Results. A long-term dynamics of yersiniosis morbidity rate in Vilnius city and Lithuania exhibits significant changes in the general trend: in 2005-2009 the morbidity rate was increasing, and in 2009-2015 the morbidity rate of yersiniosis was decreasing. The decreasing trend was characteristic of Vilnius County in the period of 2005-2015. The morbidity structure in terms of gender differs: men were at a higher risk to contract yersiniosis than women (Vilnius County had RR=1.50, 95 % C.I. 1.27; 1.81; Lithuania had RR=1.99, 95 % C.I. 1.13; 1.28). The main risk group for yersiniosis consists of children of 0-3 years of age. During the analysed period, hospitalised yersiniosis cases constituted 57.3 perc. in Vilnius County, and 69.2 perc. in Lithuania. Conclusions. The observed epidemiologic patterns of yersiniosis in the analysed period may be associated with intake of certain risky foods, ensuring of safety of their placing on the market, and certain changes in the epidemiologic supervision system. Despite the decreasing trend in its morbidity rates, yersiniosis remains a critical problem of public health, especially among children.

Particular attention has been paid to the elucidation of the characteristic features of the negative social and legal phenomenon of domestic violence. It has been established that the conceptual principles of protecting a person from violence by the society and the immediate environment of this person (microcommunity) were first articulated by the United Nations in the context of building a global comprehensive system of protecting human rights based on the recognition of human rights of the third generation as special rights of certain social categories (children, women, seniors, disabled, etc.). EU legislation in the field of combating family violence ("domestic violence") is generally grounded on international and legal platform. Modern European anti-discrimination legal paradigm is based on the postulate for the recognition of a family as the "basic organizational formation in a democratic society" and the need to protect all its members from existing forms of violence. Domestic violence is mostly considered as a manifestation of discrimination based on gender feature. Yersinia enterocolitica is widely spread in the environment and animal populations, which poses a threat for people to get infected with yersiniosis. Objective. To assess epidemiologic patterns of yersiniosis in Vilnius County. Tasks of the study. To assess relevance of yersiniosis in a group of intestinal tract infections transmissible through food and water in Lithuania and the European Union; to identify epidemiologic patterns of yersiniosis in Lithuania and Vilnius County in a period of 2005-2015. Material and methods. A descriptive epidemiological analysis was conducted. The data of Division for Prevention and Control of Communicable Diseases of Vilnius Public Health Centre, the Centre for Communicable Diseases and AIDS, the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control, the European Food Safety Authority, and the Statistics Department of Lithuania have been used. A model of brokenstick regression (segmented regression), Fisher's exact test, the Pearson's and Spearman's correlation coefficients were applied for the analysis. Results. A long-term dynamics of yersiniosis morbidity rate in Vilnius city and Lithuania exhibits significant changes in the general trend: in 2005-2009 the morbidity rate was increasing, and in 2009-2015 the morbidity rate of yersiniosis was decreasing. The decreasing trend was characteristic of Vilnius County in the period of 2005-2015. The morbidity structure in terms of gender differs: men were at a higher risk to contract yersiniosis than women (Vilnius County had RR=1.50, 95 % C.I. 1.27; 1.81; Lithuania had RR=1.99, 95 % C.I. 1.13; 1.28). The main risk group for yersiniosis consists of children of 0-3 years of age. During the analysed period, hospitalised yersiniosis cases constituted 57.3 perc. in Vilnius County, and 69.2 perc. in Lithuania. Conclusions. The observed epidemiologic patterns of yersiniosis in the analysed period may be associated with intake of certain risky foods, ensuring of safety of their placing on the market, and certain changes in the epidemiologic supervision system. Despite the decreasing trend in its morbidity rates, yersiniosis remains a critical problem of public health, especially among children.
