Based on extensive fieldwork in East Asia (an epicenter of globalization) & southern Africa (a key node in the most marginalized continent), a cross-regional study explores what constitutes resistance to neoliberal globalization. An ecological reading of master theorists of resistance, especially Karl Polanyi (eg, 1957) focuses attention on protectionist movements as a response to the spread & deepening of the market (solid patterns & cumulative action) &, to a lesser degree, on the soft, or latent, forms of protest that may or may not harden sufficiently to challenge globalizing structures. Attention is given to submerged forms of resistance in civil society insofar as they are emerging into networks. Empirical evidence includes 75 interviews designed to elicit the voices of the subjects of globalization engaged in environmental resistance politics. Counterglobalization strategies are identified, & the impact of countervailing forces is assessed. Adapted from the source document.
