Hintergrund: Mit Einführung der fallpauschalierenden Diagnosis Related Groups (DRG) im Jahr 2003 wurde die bis dahin bestehende Kostenorientierung des deutschen Vergütungssystems von einer Leistungsorientierung abgelöst. Das DRG-System zielt mit seinen Anreizwirkungen auf eine effizientere Erbringung der Leistungen und ermöglicht gleichzeitig Leistungsverlagerungen zwischen den Kliniken. Neben solchen beabsichtigten Mengenveränderungen werden jedoch auch Tendenzen zur Über- und Fehlversorgung bzw. Indikationsausweitung vermutet, welche dem Grundsatz der Bedarfsgerechtigkeit (§ 70 SGB V) im gesetzlichen Gesundheitssystem widersprechen. Mit dem Krankenhausstrukturgesetz 2016 wurden nun gezielt Instrumente zur Mengensteuerung einzelner stationärer Leistungen etabliert, die über Bewertungsabsenkungen am fallpauschalierenden Finanzierungssystem der DRGs ansetzen. Hierüber soll nicht indizierten Leistungsausweitungen begegnet werden. Eine objektive Versorgungslast ist medizinisch in vielen Bereichen kaum zu ermitteln. Über Analysen der Versorgungssituation anhand vorhandener Krankenhausabrechnungsdaten lässt sich aber die Leistungsentwicklung verfolgen und es lassen sich demografische von anderen Einflüssen trennen. Damit können Anhaltspunkte für möglicherweise bestehende Über-, Unter- und Fehlversorgungen gewonnen werden. Die Krankenhausabrechnungsdaten (DRG-Statistik) ermöglichen für den stationären Bereich solche Analysen, die dazu beitragen können, Trends mengenanfälliger und nicht mengenanfälliger Leistungen im Sinne der Bedarfsgerechtigkeit zu identifizieren. Methodik: Die vorliegende kumulative Dissertation nutzt die DRG-Statistik auf Fallebene (Mikrodaten) in drei Projekten, um Mengenentwicklungen und regionale Unterschiede einzelner stationärer Behandlungs- und/oder Eingriffsarten detailliert zu analysieren. Als Beispiel potentiell von einer Fallzahlsteigerung betroffenen Leistung wurden stationäre Behandlungs- und/oder Eingriffsarten im Wirbelsäulenbereich gewählt. Als Beispiel für Leistungen ohne die Vermutung einer Leistungsausweitung wurden Amputationen der unteren Extremität herangezogen. Abschließend wird anhand der im Jahr 2016 zum ersten Mal getroffenen politischen Entscheidungen zur Definition mengenanfälliger (§ 9 Abs. 1c KHEntgG) und nicht mengenanfälliger Leistungen (§ 9 Abs. 1 Nummer 6 KHEntgG) diskutiert, inwieweit sich Analysen auf Basis der Mikrodaten eignen, um solche Definitionen empirisch zu unterlegen. Ergebnisse: Die vorgestellten Manuskripte konnten zeigen, dass sich die Mikrodaten der DRG-Statistik eignen, um retrospektiv bis zum Jahr 2005 Fallzahlentwicklungen einzelner Behandlungen deskriptiv zu beschreiben. Über eine geschlechts- und altersspezifische Standardisierung kann der Anteil der demografisch bedingten Veränderung und somit näherungsweise die dadurch bedingte Bedarfsentwicklung geschätzt werden. Inwieweit der nicht-demografisch bedingte Anstieg wirtschaftlichen Anreizen folgt oder aber durch Entwicklungen der medizinischen Behandlungsverfahren bedingt ist, kann anhand der DRG-Statistik nicht abschließend beurteilt werden. Die Analysen der nicht-demografisch bedingten Entwicklungen können aber detaillierte Informationen über die Indikationen und Verfahren liefern, bei denen sich Veränderungen ergeben haben. Schlussfolgerung: Analysen der DRG-Statistik können Trends für mengenanfällige und nicht mengenanfällige Leistungen identifizieren. Kleinräumige Analysen helfen ferner, anhand regionaler Versorgungsunterschiede Hinweise auf Über- und Unterversorgungsprobleme zu finden. Dies ermöglicht es den Fachvertretern, unter Berücksichtigung bekannter Veränderungen der Behandlungskonzepte und ggf. der Leitlinien, die medizinische Sinnhaftigkeit von Veränderungen zu beurteilen. Zur Interpretation der nicht-demografisch bedingten Fallzahlentwicklung sind dabei neben wirtschaftlichen Anreizen insbesondere Prävalenzentwicklungen der zugrundeliegenden Erkrankungen, neue Behandlungstechniken, medizinisch begründete Indikationsausweitungen und Veränderungen in der Erwartungshaltung der Patienten zu diskutieren. ; Background: With the introduction of the Diagnosis Related Groups (DRGs) in 2003, the existing cost orientation of the German hospital payment system was replaced by a performance oriented system. With its incentive effects, the DRG-System aims at an efficient provision of services and at the same time makes it possible to shift services between hospitals. In addition to intended changes in case volumes, however, tendencies towards overuse and misuse or expansion of indications are also suspected, which undermine the principle of need-based supply (§ 70 SGB V) in the statutory health system. The Hospital Structure Act of 2016 (Krankenhausstrukturgesetz) established targeted instruments for controlling the volume of individual inpatient services. Those instruments lower the relative weight of certain DRGs. This is intended to compensate for non-indicated case increases. An objective need of supply can hardly be determined medically in many areas. By analysing the care situation on the basis of existing hospital discharge data, however, it is possible to monitor the development of services and separate demographic from other influences. This can provide clues for possible overuse, underuse and misuse. The hospital discharge data (DRG-Statistics) enable inpatient analyses that can help identify trends in "volume sensitive" and "non volume sensitive" services in terms of need-based supply. Methodology: This cumulative dissertation uses the DRG-Statistics at case level (microdata) in three projects to analyse in detail volume developments and regional differences of individual inpatient treatment and/or intervention types. As an example of potentially volume sensitive services inpatient teatments for spinal disease were chosen. As an example for services without the assumption of volume sensitivity amputations of the lower limb were analysed. Finally, this dissertation will use the unprecedented political decisions from 2016 on the definition of volume sensitive (§ 9 para. 1c KHEntgG) and non volume sensitive services (§ 9 para. 1 no. 6 KHEntgG) to discuss whether analysis on the basis of the DRG-Statistics could be used to rationalise such definitions. Results: The manuscripts presented show that the microdata of the DRG-Statistics are suitable for describing case number developments of individual treatments retrospectively up to the year 2005. By means of gender and age specific standardisation, the proportion of demographically induced changes and thus the approximate development of the need of supply can be estimated. The extent to which the non-demographic increase follows economic incentives or is due to developments in medical teatment procedures cannot be conclusively assessed on the basis of the DRG-Statistics. However, the analyses of non-demographic developments can provide detailed information on the indications and procedures that have changed. Conclusion: Analyses of the DRG-Statistics can identify trends for volume sensitive and non volume sensitive services. Small-scale analyses also help to find indications of over- and undersupply poblems on the basis of regional supply differences. This enables the experts to assess the medical significance of changes, taking into account known changes in treatment concepts and guidelines. In order to Interpret the non-demographic development of the number of cases, special prevalence trends of the uderlying diseases, new treatment techniques, medically justified extensions of indications and changes in patient expectations must be discussed in addition to economic incentives.

The paper is devoted to a comparative analysis of the popular culture of the Cold War in the United States and in the USSR, namely, to the genres, which were stimulated by the public moods of the Cold War (noir, spy detective, etc.). It is argued that despite the refusal of Soviet critics to use Western terminology, the genres of noir and spy detective existed in the Soviet literature and cinema, but had their own national and cultural content. In particular, the images of "fatal women" and "female adventurers", who were central in the noir poetics, were not typical in the Soviet popular culture, excluding works devoted to the life abroad (in particular, novels by A. Tolstoy "Emigrants", "Hyperboloid of engineer Garin", etc.), however, noir motifs have appeared in the Soviet literature and cinema since the mid-1950s, when the official optimism of the Soviet public culture has been replaced by emotions of disappointment and tragic past (after J. Stalin's death and denunciation of his personality cult). The novels of the little-studied writers L. Ovalov ("The Copper Button") and H.-M. Muguev ("Doll of Mrs. Bark", "The Quiet City", "Fire Paw") were analyzed in the context of the biographies of their authors, gender politics of the novels and the Soviet concepts of "freedom" and the opposition of "friend" and "enemy". It is proved that the images of "adventurers" and style in the spy novels by Ovalov and Muguev reproduce the poetics of "noir" in the Soviet literature, which looked as authentic view in depicting war, emigration, espionage, captivity, conspiracies, and other existential situations. It was argued that the noir motifs in the late Soviet cinema were used in depicting the bipolar and hostile world in the spy genre ("The Secret Agent's Blunder", "17 Moments of Spring"), and also in depicting the postwar period of Soviet culture, losses of ideals and destroying a large number of people' destinies. It was argued that the "Soviet project" was not separated from the cultural mainstream of the 20th century, it experienced the influences of Western popular culture and its values. ; Статья посвящена сравнительному анализу популярной культуры в США и в СССР периода Холодной войны, а именно жанрам, расцвет которых был стимулирован общественными настроениями Холодной войны (нуар, шпионский детектив, др.). Утверждается, что несмотря на отказ советской критики использовать западную терминологию жанров, нуар и шпионский детектив существовали в советской литературе и кино, однако обладали собственным национально-культурным содержанием. В частности, образы «роковых женщин» и «авантюристок», центральные для стиля нуар, были не характерны для советской популярной культуры, исключая произведения, посвященные заграничной жизни (в частности, А. Толстой «Эмигранты», «Гиперболоид инженера Гарина», др), однако мотивы нуар появляются в советской литературе и кино с середины 1950х, когда на смену официальному оптимизму советской публичной культуры приходят эмоции разочарования, трагизма (после смерти И. Tez (Yüksek Lisans) -- İstanbul Ticaret Üniversitesi Kaynakça var. ; Evlilik bireylerin hayatındaki en önemli kararların başında gelir. Bu karar beraberinde maddi manevi birçok sorumluluk getirir. Bu sorumlulukların yerine getirilebilmesi için fiziksel, duygusal, ekonomik ve toplumsal olgunluğa ulaşmış olmak gerekirken, evlilik olgunluğuna ulaşmadan ve gerçekçi olmayan beklentilerle yapılan evliliklerin pek de uzun ömürlü olmayacağı düşünülmektedir. Araştırma üniversite öğrencilerinin olgunluk düzeyleri ile evlilik beklentisi arasındaki ilişkisinin incelenmesi amacıyla yapılmıştır. Bu bağlamda yapılan çalışmaya 290?ı kadın 86?sı erkek olmak üzere toplam 376 kişi katılmıştır. Veri toplamak amacıyla, araştırmacı tarafından hazırlanan kişisel Bilgi Formu (Ek-1), Evlilik Olgunluk Ölçeği (Ek-2) ve Evlilik Beklentisi Ölçeği (Ek-3) kullanılmıştır. Araştırmada verilerin analizi için SPSS for Windows 15.0 programı kullanılmıştır. Demografik veriler frekans dağılımı verilerek tablolaştırılmıştır. Niceliksel verilerin karşılaştırılmasında iki grup arasındaki farklılığı belirlemek için Bağımsız Örneklemler T-testi ve Çift Yönlü Varyans Analizi, araştırmanın bağımlı ve bağımsız değişkenleri arasındaki ilişkiyi test etmek amacıyla Pearson Korelasyon Testi ve Regresyon Analizinden yararlanılmıştır. Araştırma bulgularına göre üniversite öğrencilerinin evlilik olgunluğu ve evlilik beklentisi arasında anlamlı ve pozitif bir ilişki bulunmuştur. Araştırmaya göre evlilik öncesi olgunluğu arttıkça evlilik beklentisinin de arttığı görülmüştür. Ancak katılımcıların evlilik olgunluğu ve evlilik beklentisi değerleri yaş ve cinsiyete göre farklılaşmamıştır. Kişilerin evlilik olgunluğu ve evlilikten beklentileri arttıkça evlilik yaşının öteleneceği düşünüldüğünden, aşırı beklentinin yaşattığı zorluklar hakkında eğitimler verilmesinin faydalı olacağı düşünülmektedir. ; Marriage is the one of the most important decisions in the lives of individuals. This decision brings with it many material and moral responsibilities. While it is necessary to achieve physical, emotional, economic and social maturity in order to fulfill these responsibilities, it is thought that the marriages made with unrealistic expectations will not be long lasting. The research was conducted to investigate the relationship between the maturity level of the university students and the expectation of marriage. In this context, a total of 376 people , 290 of whom were female and 86 were male included in the study. . In order to collect data, Personal Information Form prepared by the researcher (App-1), Marriage Maturity Scale (App-2) and Marriage Expectation Scale (App-3) were used. SPSS for Windows 15.0 program was used for data analysis. Demographic data were tabulated by giving frequency distribution. In order to determine the difference between the two groups in the comparison of quantitative data, Independent Samples t-Test, and Bidirectional Analysis of Variance were used, Pearson Correlation Test and Regression Analysis were used to test the relationship between the dependent and independent variables of the study. According to the findings of the research, a significant and positive relationship was found between marriage maturity and marriage expectancy of university students. According to the research, it was observed that the marriage expectancy increased as the pre-marriage maturity increased. However, marital maturity and expectation of marriage did not differ according to age and gender. Since it is thought that marriage age will increase as the maturation and expectations of the marriage increase, it is thought to be useful to provide training about the difficulties caused by excessive expectations. ; İÇİNDEKİLER ÖZET . Las disputas por la despenalización y legalización del aborto movilizan a diferentes actores (personas, grupos y organizaciones) de la sociedad argentina. En las controversias públicas por el reconocimiento y el acceso a este derecho, se reconoce la presencia de argumentos y explicaciones que se emplazan en cosmovisiones ideológicas antagónicas. La construcción de sentidos y significados sobre esta problemática gira en torno a temas de referencia (la vida, el derecho y la salud), así como también sobre la definición de los lugares sociales y políticos que son asignados al sujeto "mujeres". Esta tesis propone analizar los discursos de dos organizaciones (La Campaña y Pro-vida) que actualmente protagonizan la controversia en la arena pública, y que encarnan posicionamientos particulares sobre esta problemática social. En esta dirección, la tesis realiza una aproximación sociológica al estudio de los aspectos jurídicos, socio-sanitarios y discursivos que atravesaron la problemática en las dos últimas décadas, analizando cómo se construyó el problema público así como la elaboración de una demanda social. Considerando este marco sociocultural, político e histórico, y a partir de los aportes teóricos de diferentes campos de estudio de las ciencias sociales, la investigación propone analizar cuáles son las estrategias retórico-argumentativas presentes en los discursos de ambas organizaciones en la plataforma digital Facebook, dispositivo activamente utilizado por las mismas, en la comunicación de sus consignas, reclamos y demandas. Se aborda un corpus conformado por publicaciones que ambas organizaciones realizaron en páginas de Facebook durante el período 2014-2016. La tesis problematiza cómo se produce la persuasión de los destinatarios, a partir de la identificación de aspectos ligados al ethos, pathos y logos de los discursos. De manera transversal, se indaga y se analiza qué imaginarios sobre las mujeres se modelizan en ambos discursos. Sostenemos que las estrategias retórico-argumentativas de ambos discursos se diferencian no sólo por el modo como es tematizada esta problemática social, sino también por la presencia, en el caso de Pro-vida, de una marcada orientación de la argumentación hacia los aspectos emocionales, y en el caso de La Campaña, hacia los aspectos racionales. Asimismo, sostenemos que los discursos plantean imaginarios diferenciales sobre el sujeto "mujeres". En el discurso de Pro-vida, predomina el imaginario de la mujer que aborta como pecadora, irracional y patológica, el cual funciona como reverso del imaginario de una mujer "normal", consagrada -en términos identitarios- a través de la maternidad y la reproducción. En el discurso de La Campaña, predomina el imaginario de "mujeres vulneradas" por las consecuencias del aborto inseguro y clandestino, así como también de "mujeres politizadas" a través de la lucha por su autonomía sexual y reproductiva. La tesis se plantea como un aporte para comprender cómo se ha desarrollado esta disputa político-ideológica en un contexto sociocultural e histórico reciente, así como para pensar el desarrollo de los debates actuales, en un clima de época en el cual las desigualdades de género y particularmente la demanda por la despenalización del aborto, se encuentran en el centro de la agenda social y política. ; The last few years, argentinean society has seen the growth of disputes over decriminalization and legalization of abortion. Individual's and orgazation's points of view have not only expressed contrasted ideas on women rights, but also deep ideological differences. Women's position in society, as well as the meaning of life, rights and health have been the main issues of de discussions among opposing groups. In this thesis we analyze the public discourses on Facebook between 2014 and 2016 of the two main organizations pro and against abortion in Argentina: La Campaña y Pro-vida. Our goal is to study the different topics concerning abortion, such as the legal grounds, the public health problem, and the ideological and political perspectives, in order to understand how decriminalisation and legalization of abortion became a pressing demand and a controversial issue in Argentina. In particular, we analyze communication strategies on Facebook to gain support for or against abortion. In addition we study women's stereotypes in Pro-vida and La Campaña public discourses. We argue that Pro-vida's communication strategy tends to focus on feelings regarding motherhood while La Campaña usually highlights the importance of making a choice based on women's own decision and their individual life project. Moreover, Pro-vida's discourses tend to assume that women who abort have a sinful lifestyle, opposed to a mother, that would be the ideal of a "normal woman". On the contrary, La Campaña highlights the struggle of women for their right to choose over their own body as well as the need to address abortion as a public health issue, and to take into consideration the severe problems that women face when the get an illegal abortion. Traditionally, the study of the relation between stratification and migration has been focusing on features such as origin, ethnicity or gender, paying special attention to migrants at the bottom of the stratification. Recent studies (Shachar, 2011, 2016; Shachar & Hirschl, 2013) have shifted this lens by proving that there are worldwide ways to facilitate access to citizenship to applicants having exceptional talents —in sports, in academia or in industry—, most of them privileged by discretional decisions. Much less attention has caught the relation between stratification and programmes fast-tracking the route to citizenship in exchange for economic transactions. These are usually called citizenship by investment programmes (CIPs) and come in different forms. Yet all of them have in common the factor that economic capacity of the applicant is the key to access citizenship. By facilitating and speeding up the acquisition of citizenship on grounds of economic capacity, CIPs entail stratification in accessing citizenship that is established de jure or by law. This stratification in naturalisation requires further investigation and raises several questions: Is it fair to remove some requirements, such as civic and language tests, for checkbook citizens while keeping them for other naturalisation applicants? Should money be accepted as the main requirement to grant citizenship? Are these policies arbitrary? This paper has three objectives. First, to present the phenomenon of CIPs, focusing on programmes established by EU member states. Second, to compare the requirements applied to general applicants and to applicants following CIPs in order to prove that the programmes entail a de jure stratification in the access to citizenship. Last remarks ; Tradicionalmente, los estudios centrados en las relaciones entre migración y estratificación han prestado especial atención a la influencia de características tales como el origen, la etnia o el género a la hora de determinar la posición dentro de la estratificación migratoria, interesándose, a su vez, particularmente por los inmigrantes que se encontraban en la base de dicha estratificación. Sin embargo, estudios recientes (Shachar, 2011, 2016; Shachar & Hirschl, 2013) han cambiado esta tendencia virando su interés hacia aquellos migrantes situados en la cúspide de la estratificación, beneficiados por la apertura de una vía exprés para la obtención de la ciudadanía en razón de sus excepcionales talentos en ámbitos tan diversos como el deporte, la academia o la industria. Esta nueva forma de acceso a lo alto de la estratificación migratoria, en expansión, existe en todo el mundo y suele darse normalmente de forma particularizada y discrecional. Menos atención han obtenido otro tipo de programas que igualmente facilitan el acceso a lo más alto de la estratificación migratoria, esta vez basándose en la condición económica del postulante. Me refiero a los citizenship by investment programs (CIPs por sus siglas en inglés), los cuales acortan la ruta a la ciudadanía a cambio de inversiones económicas, que se dan de formas altamente diversas dependiendo del país y del programa a la sazón. A pesar de la citada diversidad, aquello que caracteriza a los CIPs es que para estos la capacidad económica del postulante se convierte en la llave que da acceso a la ciudadanía del país que implanta el programa. Facilitando y acelerando la adquisición de la ciudadanía en razón de la capacidad económica, los CIPs conllevan así una estratificación en el acceso a la ciudadanía que es establecida de jure o por ley. Dicha estratificación en la naturalización requiere de una investigación ulterior y suscita diversas cuestiones de gran importancia: ¿es justo eliminar algunos requisitos, tales como los exámenes cívicos y de idioma, a los ciudadanos de chequera, mientras los mismos se mantienen para otros solicitantes de naturalización? ¿Debería la capacidad económica del postulante ser aceptada como el requisito principal a la hora de garantizar la ciudadanía? ¿Son dichas políticas arbitrarias? Este artículo tiene tres objetivos. En primer lugar, presentar el fenómeno de los CIPs, centrándose especialmente en aquellos programas establecidos entre los miembros de la Unión Europea. El interés principal de centrarse en dichos estados es que en su caso las decisiones unilaterales de otorgar la ciudadanía nacional a cambio de una inversión económica conllevan igualmente el otorgamiento de la ciudadanía europea, la cual garantiza derechos supranacionales e impone obligaciones a otros estados miembros. En segundo lugar, comparar los requisitos solicitados a los postulantes generales de naturalización y a aquellos que siguen la vía exprés abierta por los CIPs. Esto se hará a fin de probar que los CIPs comportan una severa estratificación, establecida y plasmada de jure en el acceso a la ciudadanía en favor de los solicitantes que siguen esta vía. Por último, ofrecer argumentos que despierten la sospecha sobre la posible arbitrariedad de dichas políticas de naturalización, arbitrariedad que no tiene cabida ni respaldo legal en el contexto del constitucionalismo contemporáneo.

CHAPTER 1 It has been intensively and controversially discussed whether 'good' economic policies and governance in the recipient countries render foreign aid more effective in alleviating poverty and stimulating economic growth. By contrast, the question of whether aid recipient countries would benefit from stronger income effects if foreign donors provided higher quality aid has received scant attention so far. In Chapter 1, we make use of the index of donor performance from the Center for Global Development to compare the effects of quality-adjusted aid and unadjusted aid on changes in GDP per capita. Our difference-in-differences analysis reveals significant and quantitatively important treatment effects for quality-adjusted aid after the introduction of the Paris Declaration on Aid Effectiveness in 2005, while we do not find significant treatment effects for unadjusted aid. This implies that only recipient countries with increased aid inflows of high quality benefit in terms of increasing GDP per capita. The quality of aid matters most when accounting for delayed effects. However, our results depend on the sample of recipient countries. CHAPTER 2 Over 300 government members have had the main responsibility for international development cooperation in 23 member countries of the OECD's Development Assistance Committee since the organization started reporting detailed ODA data in 1967. Understanding their role in foreign aid giving is crucial since their decisions can influence aid effectiveness and thus economic development on the ground. Chapter 2 examines whether development ministers' personal characteristics are associated with aid budgets and aid quality. To this end, we create a novel database on development ministers' gender, political ideology, prior professional experience in development cooperation, education, and time in office over the 1967-2012 period. Results from fixed-effects panel regressions show that some of the personal characteristics of development ministers matter. Most notably, we find that more experienced ministers with respect to their time in the development office obtain larger aid budgets. Moreover, our results suggest that female ministers as well as officeholders with prior professional experience in development cooperation and a longer time in office provide higher-quality ODA. CHAPTER 3 The bulk of IFC lending benefits companies from rich countries, and projects in countries with middle income. Large conglomerates such as Lidl or Mövenpick have been among its direct beneficiaries. This contrasts to some extent with the IFC's official mandate, which is to finance poverty-reducing projects for which private capital is not available on reasonable terms. In Chapter 3, we investigate the drivers of this mismatch. According to our theory, the governments of industrialized countries where borrowing companies are based form coalitions with governments of middle-income countries where the projects are implemented. We therefore expect preferential treatment to be most pronounced when the representatives of both the recipient's and the company's countries are best able to collude in exerting their influence. We argue that this will be the case when both countries' governments are represented among the IFC's Board of Executive Directors, and when they have extraordinary clout with major IFC shareholders. Using data for more than 3,000 IFC projects over the 1995-2015 period we show that the (joint) influence of these countries helps them to receive a disproportional share of IFC funding. CHAPTER 4 The success of development interventions crucially depends on their uptake in the targeted population. We investigate incentives for uptake of those interventions, making use of a framework grounded in psychological theory, "The Theory of Planned Behavior". The framework suggests three determinants for intervention uptake: personal attitudes, the social influence of important others and the perceived ease of intervention use. We use the setup of two randomized controlled trials in Indonesia and Pakistan to test the theory for development intervention purposes. Our findings show that the proposed determinants are indeed associated with increased uptake. We investigate further on the determinant personal attitudes, which is most relevant to our intervention, by conducting a framed field experiment in Indonesia. The experiment shows that the study population in the Indonesian context exhibits higher levels of support for the project if the participation of international actors is highlighted. Consequently, our results encourage international research and development cooperation, first, to consider the determinants suggested by the "Theory of Planned Behavior" in the design of projects in order to increase intervention uptake. Second, depending on the country context, explicitly framing international participation in the conducted project might be a cost-effective way to increase supportive behavior towards the intervention. CHAPTER 5 This chapter assesses the impact of impact evaluations based on impact evaluation studies in developmental health interventions, collected through the International Initiative for Impact Evaluation's repository. Considering the steady increase in impact evaluations and financial resources already spent, policy and research are demanding evidence on whether the growing effort indeed leads to learning, improved projects and finally, improved outcomes. I analyze this empirical question for the period 1995-2014 in a cross-country panel for general health outcomes and at a sub-national level for the country Uganda with regard to infant mortality rates per districts. Results are very robust and show a significant correlation between impact evaluations in health and improved outcomes on a cross-country level. Based on more precise data measurement and linkages, also sub-national findings indicate that impact evaluations in maternal and neonatal health conditional on increased corresponding ODA disbursements lead to reduced infant mortality.

This thesis is composed of three independent essays studying the role of the schooling and social environment in which individuals make their educational, work or family decisions. The first chapter studies the impact of enrollment at a more selective Parisian high school on students' performance and choice of field of study. We compare students' educational outcomes depending on whether their 9th grade standardized score fell just above or below an admission threshold, and we find that enrollment at a more selective high school has no impact on students' performance but induces female students to turn away from scientific fields and settle for less competitive ones. Our results are consistent with lab-experiment findings on gender differences in attitude towards competition and bad grades. The second chapter analyzes grade repetition in higher education and focuses on the spillover effects induced by grade repeaters on undergraduate freshmen. We distinguish between spillovers effects induced by higher- or lower- achieving repeaters to disentangle class size from composition effects, and we find that grade repetition generates little congestion effects but has important negative composition effects. We show that the performances of freshmen are very sensitive to the number of higher-achieving repeaters while they are not impacted by the number of lower-achieving repeaters. One potential mechanism would be distortion in teaching practices. The last chapter studies the impact of temporary contracts and youth unemployment to explain observed delays in age at first cohabiting relationship and in age at first child. Using French data on the work and family history of large samples of young adults, this chapter provides evidence that access to permanent jobs has a much stronger impact than access to temporary jobs for family formation. According to our estimates, about 25% of the increase in age at first cohabitation and about 40% of the increase in age at first child observed during the second half of the century can be explained by the rise in unemployment and in the share of temporary jobs among young workers. ; Cette thèse se compose de trois essais indépendants dont le dénominateur commun est d'étudier le rôle du contexte institutionnel et de l'environnement social dans lesquels se décident les trajectoires scolaires, professionnelles et familiales. Une moitié environ des lycées parisiens (les plus prestigieux) reçoivent chaque année davantage de demandes d'admission de la part des collégiens qu'ils n'ont de places disponibles. Le logiciel d'affection utilisé (Affelnet) est contraint de définir, pour chacun de ces lycées, un niveau minimum (en termes de note moyenne obtenue en troisième) nécessaire pour l'admission. En comparant les trajectoires des derniers collégiens admis dans des lycées parisiens sélectifs avec celles des premiers recalés, nous montrons dans le premier chapitre que l'accès à un établissement scolaire sélectif n'a aucun impact sur les performances ultérieures au baccalauréat, mais un impact très négatif sur la propension des jeunes lycéennes à s'orienter dans la filière générale scientifique en fin de seconde. Dans le contexte parisien, l'accès à un lycée sélectif s'accompagne surtout d'une amélioration du niveau académique des camarades de classe, notamment en science. Nos résultats concorderaient donc avec les travaux d'économie et psychologie expérimentale suggérant que les filles seraient plus réticentes que les garçons à choisir des voies compétitives. Le deuxième chapitre porte sur les effets des politiques de redoublement en classes préparatoires scientifiques, en distinguant les effets directs observés pour les redoublants eux-mêmes et les effets indirects induits sur les autres élèves au moment de la préparation des concours. Nous montrons que les redoublements ont des effets très largement positifs pour les redoublants eux-mêmes, mais que la présence de nombreux redoublants dans une classe a des effets plutôt négatifs pour les autres élèves, notamment quand ces redoublants sont forts académiquement. Plus une classe compte de redoublants de haut niveau académique (niveau mesuré lors de leur première participation aux concours) plus les nouveaux arrivants sont en difficulté au moment des concours, alors que les performances des nouveaux arrivants sont largement insensibles au nombre de redoublants de niveau moyen ou faible. Les redoublements ne semblent pas influer sur les autres élèves parce qu'ils contribuent à surcharger les classes, mais parce qu'ils en modifient le profil et peuvent induire les enseignants à produire des cours d'un niveau trop ambitieux. Le troisième chapitre s'intéresse aux conséquences pour les trajectoires familiales de l'institutionnalisation des emplois précaires et des difficultés accrues rencontrées par les jeunes adultes pour s'insérer durablement dans l'emploi. Nous y développons une analyse de durée à partir du modèle d'Abbring et van den Berg (2003) et de deux enquêtes rétrospectives sur de larges échantillons de jeunes adultes, et montrons que l'accès à l'emploi stable constitue une étape bien plus décisive que l'accès à un emploi précaire pour la mise en couple et l'arrivée des premiers enfants. Ainsi, entre les générations nées au milieu des années cinquante et celles nées au début des années soixante-dix, la montée de la part des emplois précaires et du chômage des jeunes expliquerait environ 25% des retards observés dans l'âge de mise en couple, et 40% des retards dans l'âge au premier enfant.

This dossier is the result of the 1st International Conference on Language Ethnography Studies, which in 2015 brought together researchers from different areas and research fields to discuss the multiple aspects of language, especially narrative, treated here from the ethnographic prism. As a first edition, we tried to reflect on a set of issues in order to problematise epistemological, aesthetic and political assumptions, often reduced to the opposition between orality and writing. Faced with this classic dichotomy, we chose to open a broad debate about language, through different ethnographic fields, diverse theoretical perspectives and not always converging analytical focuses, so that this multiplicity would be able to represent, on the one hand, the wide range of alternatives around approaches to discourse and, on the other, to draw attention to the impossibility of keeping the discussion focused on these two concepts still in force. Currently, narrative studies are claimed and worked on by the most varied fields of knowledge, from canonical areas such as, for example, those linked to the Faculty of Letters (discourse analysis, linguistics, among others), to gender studies, or even the most varied fields of medical sciences, psychology, philosophy, and so on. If we wanted to expand the argumentative potential, we could include here the uses made of these concepts by countless social movements, among them, feminist movements, LGBTs, vindicatory movements linked to the question of land, movements around ethnic or religious causes, among so many others that have testimony in the most varied parts of the planet. Thus, the idea, in that first moment, was to conceive an encounter where the conformation of the group did not pass so much through an analytical homogeneity (in terms of fields of knowledge and / or theoretical approaches), but that the researchers converged in methodological terms. We were then interested in providing a collection of ethnographic materials that, produced in different temporalities and spaces, could allude to the infinite richness that narrative studies can unleash. Thus, this collection is inclined to debate processes and research questions around language. One of the challenges emerging from this discussion is, as mentioned above, the transversality with which the theme of discourse / narrative operates. Consequently, it is common that in works on such themes, we find them associated with the discussion on memory, performance, texts, emotions, ethnography of speech, orality, folklore, etc.Here, our initial orientation around the treatment of the idea of narrative/discourse arose from localized questions, especially in the anthropological field. ; Este dossier es fruto de la I Jornada Internacional de Estudios sobre Etnografías del Lenguaje, que reunió en 2015 a investigadorxs de diferentes áreas y campos de investigación para discutir los múltiples aspectos del lenguaje, en especial, la narrativa, tratada aquí desde el prisma etnográfico . En tanto primera edición, pretendimos reflexionar sobre un conjunto de cuestiones en función de problematizar presupuestos epistemológicos, estéticos y políticos, reducidos a menudo a la oposición entre oralidad y escritura. Frente a esa clásica dicotomía, elegimos abrir un amplio debate acerca del lenguaje, a través de campos etnográficos distintos, perspectivas teóricas diversas y focos analíticos no siempre convergentes, de manera que esa multiplicidad fuera capaz de representar, por un lado, la amplia gama de alternativas en torno a abordajes sobre el discurso y, por otro, de llamar la atención sobre la imposibilidad de mantener la discusión centrada en esos dos conceptos aún vigentes. Actualmente, los estudios sobre narrativas son reivindicados y trabajados por los más variados campos de conocimiento, desde áreas canónicas como, por ejemplo, aquellas ligadas a la facultad de Letras (análisis del discurso, lingüística, entre otras), hasta estudios de género, o incluso, los más variados campos de las ciencias médicas, de la psicología, filosofía, etc. Si quisiéramos ampliar el potencial argumentativo, podríamos incluir aquí los usos hechos de esos conceptos por incontables movimientos sociales, entre ellos, movimientos feministas, LGBTs, movimientos reivindicatorios ligados a la cuestión de la tierra, movimientos en torno a causas étnicas o religiosas, entre tantos otros de los que e tienen testimonio en las más variadas partes del planeta. Así, la idea, en ese primer momento, fue la de concebir un encuentro donde la conformación del grupo no pasara tanto por una homogeneidad analítica (en términos de campos de conocimiento y / o de abordajes teóricos), sino que lxs investigadorxs convergieran en términos metodológicos. Nos interesó entonces proporcionar una reunión de materiales etnográficos que, producidos en temporalidades y espacios distintos, pudieran aludir a la riqueza infinita que los estudios sobre las narrativas pueden desencadenar. Así, esta colección se inclina a debatir procesos y cuestiones de investigación en torno al lenguaje. Uno de los desafíos que emergen de esta discusión es, como citamos anteriormente, la transversalidad con la que el tema del discurso / narrativa opera. En consecuencia, es común que en trabajos sobre tales temáticas, las encontremos asociadas a la discusión sobre memoria, performance, textos, emociones, etnografía del habla, oralidad, folclore, etc.Aquí, nuestra orientación inicial en torno al tratamiento de la idea de narrativa / discurso surgió de cuestiones localizadas, especialmente, en el campo antropológico.

Stefanie Göweil, Philosophin und Germanistin, die die Fächer Deutsch, Psychologie/Philosophie sowie Deutsch als Zweit- und Fremdsprache an einem Wiener Gymnasium unterrichtet, stellt die Frage, was "gar nicht so neu im angeblich so Neuen des neoliberalen Ideals der Selbstunternehmer_in?" (S. 39) ist, und erarbeitet sowohl detailliert als auch tiefschürfend Grenzen und Chancen einer individualisierten Geschlechterordnung. Unter Anerkennung von gesellschaftlichen Transformationsprozessen blickt sie – ausgehend von Österreich – auf das Bildungssystem als einem der Orte, wo "der neue Geschlechtervertrag an die Frau gebracht wird" (S. 39). Die Begeisterung und Hingabe der Autorin ist deutlich spürbar und stärkt die Bereitschaft der Leser_innen, sich auf die anspruchsvolle Darstellung von philosophischer, psychoanalytischer und feministischer sowie post-feministischer Theoriebildung einzulassen. Das 300-seitige Buch ist nichts zum schnell Lesen, aber ideal für vertiefende Auseinandersetzung mit dem Patriarchat als komplexem System von Benennung und Verschiebung sowie mit der symbolischen Ordnung der Geschlechter (weshalb die Begriffe Frau und Mann im Buch ohne Gendersternchen* benannt werden, sonst setzt Göweil verschiedene Möglichkeiten der gendergerechte/re/n Sprache ein). Dabei dient die Problematik der Subjektwerdung als roter Faden in den verschlungenen und immer wieder in weiteren und neuen Zusammenhängen wiederkehrenden Überlegungen. Das Buch bleibt jedoch nicht bei der dialektischen, inter- und transdisziplinären Analyse stehen, sondern zeigt Auswege auf, die weit über den schulischen Bereich hinausgehend gesellschaftlich relevant sein können und sollen. Göweil versucht durch einen Exkurs in das feministische, diskursanalytische Theoriegebäude zu belegen, dass speziell "in einer Zeit, in der vorgegeben wird, 'der' Feminismus habe all seine Ziele erreicht, sei erfolgreich gewesen, […] durch das implizite 'Verbot' des Begriffs 'Frau' eine sprachliche Geschichtlichkeit bzw. die leisen Spuren einer sich entwickelnden sprachlichen Geschichtlichkeit zum Verschwinden gebracht" (S. 282) werden. Ihre These zu diesem zunehmenden Verschwinden des Begriffs "'Frau' aus dem Wortschatz zur Thematisierung geschlechtlicher" (S. 21) und gesellschaftlicher Ungleichheit ist, dass "Frauen gerade durch die Dethematisierung von Geschlecht in der Immanenz gehalten und ökonomisch-gesellschaftlich funktionalisiert werden" (S. 46). Als "Ausweg aus dieser De-Thematisierung von Geschlecht" (S. 106) und um diese "mit der Individualisierung zusammenzudenken" (S. 106) hinterfragt Göweil die moderne Freiheit und Individualität hinsichtlich ihres Zusammenhangs mit kapitalistischen Produktionsweisen. "Ohne das Potenzial der Individualisierung per se zu leugnen" (S. 39), erforscht sie die "Grenzen der modernen Individualisierung von Geschlecht" (S. 39) und die Konsequenzen, die "sich daraus für feministisches Engagement und emanzipatorisches Handeln ergeben" (S. 39). Sie fragt: "Was wäre nötig, um die weibliche Individualisierung aus ihrer Komplizenschaft mit dem neoliberalen Regime zu befreien und wo böten sich dafür Ansatzpunkte?" (S. 39). Methodisch geht es Göweil mit ihrem Buch um einen "fruchtbaren, produktiven Dialog zwischen zentralen Theoretiker*innen des Poststrukturalismus, der Psychoanalyse und der feministischen Philosophie/Theorie" (S. 49). Insbesondere bei Judith Butler und Luce Irigaray will sie "falschen Polarisierungen und reduktionistischen Gegenüberstellungen der Theorien entgegen [.] arbeiten" (S. 49). Wenn sie etwa die "Konstruiertheit von geschlechtlichen Unterschieden selbst" (S. 45) als ein Konstrukt und die Reduktion des weiblichen Geschlechts wieder auf einen Spiegel des Männlichen hinterfragt, argumentiert Göweil mit Irigaray. Deren Theorie der sexuellen Differenz erscheint ihr "als eine Möglichkeit, dem Narzissmus dieser neoliberalen 'Übermenschen'" (S. 221), beziehungsweise der neoliberalen Aushöhlung der ursprünglichen Bedeutung des Gender-Begriffs durch die Imperative der Selbstoptimierung zu entgehen. Sie vermutet darin, "auch im Angesicht der sich europa- und weltweit aufdrängenden Thematik der Migration neue Lösungsansätze jenseits des männlichen Imaginären von Abschottung und Einverleibung" (S. 277). Mit Butler hingegen schlägt Göweil statt der Souveränität des Individuums vor, "die Verletzbarkeit jedes menschlichen Lebens zum Ausgangspunkt" (S. 69) von Forderungen nach "Recht auf Mitsprache, auf politische Ansprachen unabhängig von Geschlecht, Herkunft, Religion, Ethnie oder Alter" (S. 69) zu machen. Dieses Fordern finde aber zu wenig statt, viel zu oft werde auch seitens der Frauen geschwiegen. Das "Schweigen der Frauen, der Verzicht auf Kritik" (S. 48) ist laut Göweil eine der zentralen Konditionen des neuen Geschlechtervertrags, den es zu brechen gilt. Wenn Frauen 'alles', also Karriere und Haushalt, Kindererziehung und glückliche Beziehung etc. schaffen wollen, sieht sie eine "Komplizenschaft der Frauen mit dem neoliberalen Regime bzw. dem, was Butler als leidenschaftliches Verhaftetsein mit der Macht" (S. 140) bezeichnet. Die Frau als Subjekt werde vom selben Diskurs, der "stillschweigend die Erledigung reproduktiver Arbeiten durch sie voraussetzt" (S. 161), als befreit angerufen. So verschleiere beispielsweise die für Schulbücher immer wieder geforderte Nicht-Mehr-Darstellung von hausfraulichen Tätigkeiten die Benennung der faktischen Situation und unterbindet so eine Diskussion darüber, wie reproduktive Tätigkeiten und Zuständigkeiten in der Gesellschaft gerecht aufgeteilt bzw. gesellschaftlich organisiert werden könnten. Göweil sieht das als "eine neue Spielart des Schweigens. Das Reden kreist dabei um ein neues Interpretationsverbot: die Differenz der Geschlechter. In der traditionellen Ordnung der Geschlechter 'anatomisch' und 'biologisch' fixiert, wird sie heute tendenziell geleugnet. Oder, anders ausgedrückt: Die Geschlechterdifferenz ist aus dem zeitgenössischen Katalog der legitimerweise thematisierbaren und thematisierten Differenzen gestrichen worden" (S. 183). Grundlegend wichtig wäre, dass Frauen die Möglichkeit haben, "gegenhegemoniale Lesearten einbringen zu können und damit die Konzeption von Freiheit, Gleichheit und Gerechtigkeit einer Weiterentwicklung zu unterziehen" (S. 117). Doch um Gerechtigkeit einfordern zu können, braucht es zunächst ein Bewusstsein der erlebten Ungerechtigkeit. Wird der Zusammenhang von Benachteiligungen mit dem weiblichen Geschlecht nicht mehr als solcher wahrgenommen, besteht die Tendenz, dass geschlechtliche Diskriminierung individualisiert und psychologisiert wird, konstatiert Göweil. Auch im Bildungsdiskurs und speziell in der Institution Schule sieht die Autorin im Benennen der Differenz (vor allem der Geschlechter) eine zentrale Kategorie, kritisiert allerdings, dass den "Erfahrungen von Schüler_innen vorschnell einen Namen zu geben, sie voreilig auf einen Begriff zu bringen" (S. 125) eine massive Offenbarung von heterosexueller Macht manifestiere. Das Modell der psychoanalytischen Pädagogik hingegen fordere dazu auf, "als Lehrer_in selbst Forscher_in und Erkennende_r im Umgang mit dem eigenen Unbewussten und der eigenen psychischen Abwehr zu werden" (S. 196) und sich "dem Anderen aus[zu]setzen, die Erfahrung der Begrenztheit auf sich [zu] nehmen, die Negativität auf sich [zu] nehmen" (S. 204), also sich als Lehrer_in "von institutionellen Allmachtsfantasien, von dem Bedürfnis, von Schüler_innen gemocht zu werden, von dem Verlangen nach unmittelbarem positiven Feedback und vor der Angst vor Differenz und Konflikt" (S. 204) zu lösen. Das bedeutet zugleich eine reibungsvolle Auseinandersetzung mit dem System Schule und "ein gewisses Maß an Bedrohung für alle Beteiligten" (S. 267). Das Buch ist in sieben Kapitel inklusive Zusammenfassung mit Schlussfolgerungen und Ausblick (S. 279-288) gegliedert, wobei nach den sehr dichten theoretischen Diskussionen in der Einleitung/Kapitel 1 (S. 13-49) und Kapitel 2 "Selbstkannibalismus – ein neoliberales Novum?" (S. 49-106), in Kapitel 3, "Entsubjektivierung als ethisches Commitment und emanzipatorisch-politische Praxis" (S. 107-162), dann eben diese Praxis nahe rückt, was durch Einbeziehung der praxisrelevanten Fragen eine zugängliche oder alltagsrelevante Perspektivierung der philosophisch-theoretischen Kapitel davor bietet und so die Lesbarkeit merklich erleichtert. Kapitel 4, "Das Performative Potenzial des Ethischen" (S. 163-193), variiert im Vorangegangenen dargestellte Gedankengänge in neuen Zusammenhängen. Trotzdem gingen mir (nicht nur) hier mehr Zwischenkapitel für die Orientierung im Gesamtkonvolut ab. Das vergleichsweise schlanke Kapitel 5 zu den "Prinzipien der psychoanalytischen und Kritischen Pädagogik" (S. 195-214) ist ebenso wie Kapitel 6, "Die Kultivierung sexueller Differenz und ihre Bedeutung für die schulische Praxis" (S. 215-277), wieder entsprechend praxisnah. Hier bietet diese Publikation unter anderem detailliertes Zahlenmaterial zum früh zwischen den einzelnen Schultypen und somit Bildungswegen differenzierenden österreichischen Schulsystem. Ebenfalls sehr anschaulich und aufschlussreich ist Göweils Kritik am kompetenzorientierten Unterricht im Anschluss an Foucaults Prinzipien der Disziplinierung (wie etwa der Detailversessenheit, Organisation eines analytischen Raumes, der Funktionalisierung des Raumes oder der Organisation serieller Zeit und von Übung) aus Überwachen und Strafen (1994) (S. 251f). Ihre Diagnose ist, dass "jedes schulische 'undoing' schnell seine Glaubwürdigkeit" (S. 243) verliert, solange sich "Sexismus und Rassismus institutionell und individuell 'rechnen'" (S. 243). Doch wenn es – nicht nur – Jugendlichen gelingt, so schließt Göweil, "die Frage nach dem Begehren und damit die Frage nach dem Für-sich- und Für-andere-Sein neu zu klären, bietet sich damit auch die Möglichkeit für eine bewusstere Gestaltung der eigenen Geschlechtlichkeit. Nicht eine geschlechterlose Gesellschaft wäre das Ziel, sondern eine 'geschlechterbewusstere'." (S. 270) In Stefanie Göweils vielfältigen, letztendlich auch explizit praxisaffinen, über weite Strecken allerdings sehr komplexen Gedanken und Argumentationsketten, die teils (für mich als Nicht-Philosoph_in) höchst anspruchsvoll zu lesen waren, finden sich immer wieder wunderbare Fundstücke, Aha-Momente zum Mitnehmen. Und hoffentlich im Alltag umsetzen – denn derzeit gilt leider immer noch: "Einen Platz haben, der keiner ist – dies ist eine sehr passende Bezeichnung für die Situation von Frauen und Mädchen in einer heteronormativen Gesellschaft." (S. 283)

The Regional History Project at UC Santa Cruz has rich collections of interviews with generations of narrators, ranging across the administration, faculty, and staff. In the early years of the campus, founding director Elizabeth Spedding Calciano conducted two rounds of interviews focused on the student experience at what was then the newest campus of the University of California. Those interviews, conducted in 1967 and 1969 as the campus was still adding a new college every year, give a window into the original UCSC experiment, and into a time of sociocultural transformation as students responded to the Vietnam War and other social justice issues of the time. While the Project's archive includes various individual interviews with students conducted in the intervening years, in 2016 a decision was made by director Irene Reti to launch a follow-up endeavor focused specifically on the student perspective at UCSC today. The ensuing project, Student Interviews: 50 Years Later, consists of fourteen interviews conducted in April and October 2017 in a conference room the McHenry Library. In many ways, it was a very different endeavor from the original Student Interviews. At the beginning of 1967, there were only two colleges at UCSC; in 2017, there were ten, and the student population had boomed exponentially from less than 1,000 to more than 18,000. UCSC has grown into a major research university, offering more than sixty undergraduate majors and dozens of graduate programs across the divisions. In selecting students, there were new challenges of scale, and the challenge of finding a scope of voices that could speak to meaningfully different and diverse experiences on campus became a project in itself. However, while many things have changed at UCSC, this was a venture of continuities as well. Like the original Student Interviews, we accepted from the beginning that it was neither possible nor desirable to strive for a group that could fully represent the student story at UCSC. In addition to that story being far too plural and varied, we know that surprise and singularity are as much an element in oral history work as trends and commonalities. This is a gathering of unique and powerful life histories. That said, we did seek a group that could illustrate distinct points along the range of student experience here. Taking our cue from the '67 and '69 interviews, we contacted the provost of each college for recommendations, compiling a long list that we narrowed down to our final candidates. We also reached out to the directors of the resource centers, EOP, the graduate division, and selected student organizations. As a result, all ten colleges are represented here, as are many resource centers. While the group is mostly undergraduates, we do have graduate students as well. We also made certain that we had majors from all divisions, and strove for an intersectionally diverse and dynamic group, exploring relationships to place and space through the lens of racial and ethnic identity, sexuality, gender, class, and other markers of social difference. For 50 Years Later, this task was baked into our larger exploration of our narrators' academic and extracurricular work at UCSC, as well as their life histories, inspirations, struggles, and aspirations. One notable bias of our selection process is that, since we largely relied on faculty and staff recommendations, we tended to locate students that were exceptionally involved in their residential or academic communities, and were therefore especially visible to their recommenders. There are, of course, many other students who choose different spheres of involvement, or who, especially in the context of a growing research university, may simply not find the same recognition. For those who are struck by the thoughtfulness, eloquence, and importance of the stories included in this compendium, it is our hope that this reading can be the beginning of a greater curiosity and connection with the breadth of the student experience at UCSC. These are voices that need to be heard more widely and more clearly when it comes to the present and future of this campus. An unexpected parallel between the '67 and '69 student interviews and this new '17 project came through the rise of political awareness, activism, and debate at UCSC in the aftermath of the election of Donald Trump. The Sixties interviews took place in the Johnson and Nixon presidencies, a time when many students here were asking pointed questions about the priorities of their school, the Vietnam War, the nature of their education, and the future of justice in their society. These themes return in our 2017 interviews, as students share their life journeys of coming to this campus, their work finding a place here—more than one narrator describes our campus as a "PWI [predominantly white institution]"—and their hopes for how their UCSC education can shape their opportunities and outlook going forward. While some of their stories are particular to certain colleges or majors, many shine a light on deeper issues about this campus, including who is welcome here, how students adapt and make their way in their education, and what debates, dialogues, and differences mark the institution today. These are stories of community, stories of creativity, and stories of critique alike.

Susan Leigh Star war eine US-amerikanische Soziologin, Feministin, Technik- und Wissenschaftsforscherin deren Denken in der Chicago School of Sociology und dem symbolischen Interaktionismus verwurzelt ist. Sie beschäftigte sich in Kooperation mit anderen Forscher_innen ab den 1980ern mit Wissenschaftsphilosophie, Sozio-Informatik, Artificial-Intelligence-Forschung und Bürokratie-, Wissens- und Wissenschaftskulturen. Es war ihr ein Anliegen über die kooperative Produktion von Wissen unter heterogenen Bedingungen zwischen Menschen und zwischen menschlichen und nicht-menschlichen Entitäten in Erarbeitung einer jeweils adäquaten Grounded Theory zu reflektieren. Interessant für die Medienforschung im engeren Sinn sind vor allem ihre medienethnografischen und medientheoretischen Zugänge zur Informationsverarbeitung anhand "vermittelnde(r) Praktiken und Objekte" (S. 14), ihre frühen Arbeiten zu Computerforschung (Computer-Supported Cooperative Work, CSCW) und marginalisierter Arbeit sowie ihre Kritik an der Akteur-Netzwerk-Theorie von Michel Callon, John Law und Bruno Latour. Sebastian Gießmann und Nadine Taha von der Universität Siegen haben 2017 ein Buch zu Susan Leigh Stars wissenschaftlichen Arbeiten herausgegeben. Das Buch erfüllt dabei verschiedene Funktionen: Einerseits werden damit Stars wichtigste Texte gebündelt und in deutscher Sprache publiziert, andererseits bot sich damit auch die Möglichkeit einer systematischen Kontextualisierung und Kommentierung der Texte. Das Buch ist infolgedessen so aufgebaut, dass neben übersetzten Texten von Star und Schreibpartner_innen kommentierende Texte anderer Medien- und Praxistheoretiker_innen gestellt wurden, sodass diese in unmittelbaren Dialog treten und eine Einbettung in aktuelle medienwissenschaftliche Debatten und eine Nuancierung auf jeweils spezifische Fragestellungen erfahren können. Die kommentierenden Texte entstanden im Rahmen des Workshops "Translation of Boundary Objects", der im Mai 2015 an der Universität Siegen stattfand. Hervorzuheben ist auch der besonders dichte und umfangreiche Einleitungstext von Gießmann und Taha, der in das wissenschaftliche Denken und Arbeiten von Star einführt. Das Buch gliedert sich hiernach in drei Hauptkapitel, die sich um die Begriffe 'Grenzobjekte', 'Marginalität und Arbeit' sowie 'Infrastrukturen und Praxisgemeinschaften' drehen. Die umfangreiche Einleitung spinnt einen roten Faden zu Stars Werk, der den Leser_innen hilft Stars Konzepte einzuordnen, und bespricht wichtige Stationen ihres Lebens und einflussreiche Menschen und Ereignisse, um besser zu verstehen, wie sie ihre Positionen entwickelt hat. Susan Leigh Kippax wurde 1954 in Rhode Island in eine Working-Class-Familie geboren. Sie studierte zuerst Social Relations am Radcliff-College in Harvard und belegte dort vor allem Philosophie-Kurse, brach ihr Studium aber ab, heiratete und zog nach Venezuela um eine Kommune mitzugründen. Sie kehrte jedoch bald ans College zurück um sich intensiviert mit feministischen und ökologischen Fragen zu beschäftigen. Die wichtigen Themen der 1968er-Bewegung prägten Stars wissenschaftliche Auseinandersetzung stark. Insbesondere methodologische Fragen wurden für sie interessant, da sie durch die Hinwendung zu Vertreterinnen eines intersektionalen Feminismus, wie Cherríe Lawrence Molaga und Gloria Anzaldúa, begann race-, klassen- und geschlechterkritisch bspw. blinde Flecken der zu dieser Zeit entstehenden Hirnforschung aufzuzeigen, die die Gehirnhälften streng in 'männlich' und 'weiblich' einteilte. Star promovierte zu diesem Thema 1983 bei Anselm Strauss, der zu Medizinsoziologie arbeitete und den Ansatz der Grounded Theory als Weiterentwicklung des symbolischen Interaktionismus in den 1960ern erarbeitete. Stars Doktorarbeit wurde 1989 als Regions of the Mind publiziert und ist den Laboratory Studies zuzuordnen. 1989 erschienen zudem die Aufsätze zum Naturkundemuseum von Berkley und "Structure of Ill-Structured Solutions" – die wichtigsten Texte zum Konzept der 'Grenzobjekte' bei Star. Grenzobjekte entstehen für Star aus kooperativer Bearbeitung (nicht unbedingt unter Konsens) aber in "Interaktionen und unter Machtverhältnissen" (S. 33). Sie entstehen durch diese Bearbeitung, indem "Informationen sichtbar, lesbar, berechenbar und zugänglich gemacht werden" (S. 34) und können daher zwischen heterogenen sozialen Sphären vermitteln. Sie haben keine Medienspezifik als solche, sondern "handeln von einer situierten Vermittlungsspezifik des Sozialen" (S. 39), sind "n-dimensional" (S. 215) und entsprechen damit medienökologischen Auffassungen von Relationalität im buchstäblichen Sinne. 'Grenze' meint bei den Grenzobjekten damit eher eine Schwelle zwischen unterschiedlichen sozialen Wissensformationen und wird als Ort des Übersetzungsprozesses 'vieler zu vielen' aufgefasst. In einem von Stars letzten Texten, "This is not a Boundary Object", widmete sie sich 2010 noch einmal den Grenzobjekten und bespricht sie in Zusammenhang mit Standardisierungen und Kritik, die an das Konzept herangetragen wurde. Zentrale Fragen sind für sie daher die Beschaffenheit und "das Ausmaß der unsichtbaren Arbeit, der alle wissenschaftlichen Experimente und Darstellungen unterliegen, und die Materialität, die dazu dient, die Durchführung von Wissenschaft zu vermitteln" (S. 218). Für Star hängt Standardisierung stark mit unsichtbarer Arbeit zusammen, etwa so wie auch Identität mit Marginalität zusammenhängt. Anhand des sog. "Zwiebelaufsatzes" (1990/91) konnte sie zeigen, wie über Marginalität (ihre eigentlich unbedeutende Zwiebelallergie) Gemeinkosten verteilt werden, "die mit der Art verbunden sind, wie Individuen, Organisationen und standardisierte Technologien aufeinandertreffen." (S. 250) Wenn Star nämlich Essen ohne Zwiebeln bestellte, musste sie feststellen, dass sie bspw. im Fastfood-Lokal wesentlich länger warten musste, oder ihr nicht geglaubt wurde oder sich Zwiebeln zumindest als Deko auf ihrem Essen wiederfanden und zwar überall auf der Welt und in Restaurants und Lokalen mit ganz unterschiedlicher Servicequalität. Daraus zog sie Schlüsse zum Umgang mit Standardisierungen: Hätte eine signifikante Anzahl von Menschen nämlich ähnliche Bedürfnisse gehabt wie sie, wären Standardisierungen in der Gastronomie und im Einzelhandel vermutlich eher zu ihren Gunsten ausgefallen. Star beschreibt Abweichungen aber nicht als Randbereiche oder Abgesonderte, sondern als Mutationen: "Diese sind das, was sich permanent entzieht und widersetzt, aber gleichwohl in Beziehung zum Standardisierten steht. Das ist nicht Nonkonformität, sondern Heterogenität. Oder um es mit Donna Haraway zu formulieren: Dies ist das Cyborg-Ich." (S. 255) Im zweiten großen Kapitel des Buches geht es um Auseinandersetzungen mit der "Sichtbarkeit oder Unsichtbarkeit von Arbeit" im Kontext von Computer-Supported Cooperative Work (CSCW), denn was als Arbeit gilt und dementsprechend auch entlohnt wird, wird unterschiedlich definiert. Im Text "Schichten des Schweigens, Arenen der Stimme" (1999) den Star gemeinsam mit Anselm Strauss geschrieben hat, wird von mindestens vier unterschiedlichen Modi der (Un-)Sichtbarkeit gesprochen, je nachdem ob die Arbeitnehmerin oder ihre Arbeit (un-)sichtbar ist oder beides. Im Fall von Hausangestellten wird anhand von Judith Rollins Between Women (1987) aufgezeigt, wie diese zumeist von den Arbeitgeberinnen beaufsichtigt, aber sozial nicht wahrgenommen werden, ähnlich 'Nicht-Personen' nach Goffman. Durch stummen Widerstand und Sabotage können sich Hausangestellte jedoch auch unter ihren extremen Arbeitsbedingungen (Isolation und Diskriminierung aufgrund von race und Gender) ihre Autonomie erhalten oder Freiräume schaffen. Ein weiteres Beispiel dieses Forschungsinteresses ist ein Projekt zur Identifizierung unsichtbarer Arbeit von Pflegekräften ("Infrastructure and Organizational Transformation. Classifying Nurses' Work", 1995). Die Erkenntnisse aus diesen Studien flossen in die Beschäftigung mit CSCW, denn "in der Gestaltung großangelegter vernetzter Systeme kann dieser Prozess [Verhältnis der (Un-)Sichtbarkeit von Hintergrundarbeit] kaskadieren" (S. 300) und negative Effekte bis zum Zusammenbruch des Systems produzieren. Solche Beobachtungen haben jedoch für alle Bereiche, in denen es zu unsichtbarer Arbeit kommt, einen gewissen Geltungsanspruch – denken wir nur an das Verhältnis von (Un-)Sichtbarkeit von Hintergrundarbeit in der wissenschaftlichen oder kulturellen Praxis. Unsichtbarkeit sei aber auch nicht immer schlecht, weil sie vor übertriebener Kontrolle schützen kann und unsichtbare Arbeiten sollen auch nicht immer notwendigerweise sichtbar gemacht werden, aber dass sie vorhanden sind, muss erkannt und mitbedacht werden, so Star. Im abschließenden Kapitel kommen viele Stränge in gesteigerter Komplexität zusammen, die über die Befassung mit Grenzobjekten und unsichtbarer, marginalisierter Arbeit kenntlich geworden sind: Es geht nämlich um Infrastrukturen und ihre Bedeutung als "großangelegte Informationsräume" (S. 359). So verhandelt der Text "Schritte zu einer Ökologie von Infrastruktur" (1995/96) anhand des Worm Community Service (WCS) (Software zur Forschung an Nematoden die zur Entschlüsselung des menschlichen Genoms gebraucht werden) Überlegungen zu Informations- und Wissensverarbeitungssystemen, die für die alltägliche wissenschaftliche Praxis unerlässlich sind. Vernetzt wurden mit dem WCS ca. 1400 Wissenschafter_innen in 120 Laboratorien verstreut über die ganze Welt. Die Texte, die von Star in diesem Kapitel versammelt sind, verstärken ihren Anspruch, dass es lohnend ist, sich auch mit vordergründig langweiligen Dingen wie Infrastrukturen zu beschäftigen. In diese scheinbar neutralen Strukturen sind nämlich politische Kämpfe eingeschrieben oder es treten bei genauerer Betrachtung Medienspezifiken zutage, die zunächst unsichtbar bleiben. Seeds are central to agrobiodiversity, and farmers have historically bred a rich array of crop seeds to sustain rural and urban communities. Over the past 150 years, however, trajectories in macroeconomic development, science and research, and agricultural policy have dovetailed with environmental changes to diminish seed diversity and the living agricultures it supports. While genetic erosion has emerged as a global challenge, access to that diversity has also come into stark relief: Industry consolidation, the development of transgenic crops, and intellectual property rights are now seen as constraints on free exchange of seeds and the ability of farmers and breeders to adapt and breed resilient crop cultivars. How can seed diversity – and access to it – be expanded once more?To address this question, my dissertation develops a 'political ecology of seeds.' Building on the foundational account of seed primitive accumulation by Kloppenburg (1988), I examine several dimensions left underexplored in this and other accounts: new, countervailing forces of repossession working against primitive accumulation; the knowledge politics of seed production and of seed science; and the co-production of institutions, policies, discourse, and knowledge together. Using a constructivist theoretical framework, my project explores how knowledge politics and coproduction are instrumental in carving out new – and retracing old – territories for seed enclosures in the contemporary era. By examining how often-invisible discourses and practices underpin seed dispossession, we are better equipped to organize alternatives – not only to reject colonial and capitalist habits of thought/practice, but to revitalize communal, ethical, and economic strategies of repossession. My thesis includes three core papers, alongside introduction, theory, and conclusion chapters. In the first paper, I critically interrogate meanings of 'diversity' via rivaling discourses of seed 'loss' and 'persistence' visible in the scientific, international policy, and farmer movement literatures over 40-plus years. On one hand, numerous studies and stories indicate that crop genetic diversity is rapidly eroding worldwide. On the other hand, much data suggests that far from disappearing, seed diversity persists – resisting homogenizing trends within industrial capitalism. Yet in lieu of binary analyses, a more accurate accounting, I argue, can come from investigating the epistemic practices and politics of agrobiodiversity: what is known – recognized, measured, valued – as being lost or maintained. Evaluating historical data on farmer naming systems along with newer methods of genomic and biochemical analysis, I develop a multi-dimensional framework for understanding seed diversity.My second paper considers crop wild relatives (CWR) as a fast-emerging site for new seed primitive accumulation. Faced with imminent climate change, scientists and agribusinesses are vying to develop crops that can survive drought, floods, and shifting pest regimes. CWR offer breeders the allure of 'climate-hardy traits,' infusing genomes of modern crops with 'lost' genetic variety. Paradoxically, wild relatives themselves are endangered, propelling CWR into the limelight as an international conservation and food-security priority. I examine accumulation processes along two fronts: conservation policies, where in situ approaches, typically regarded as empowering alternatives to ex situ, instead may support appropriation; and breeding and biotechnology research, which produces new use values for CWR while profoundly shaping upstream conservation priorities.My third and final paper explores the US-based Open Source Seed Initiative as one example of repossession. OSSI has created an alternative to intellectual property rights with a 'protected commons' for seed. Commons scholarship has contributed much on theories of institutional governance. But, I argue, attending to the practice of 'commoning' helps illuminate a more complex triad: communities who manage shared resources according to negotiated social protocols. Employing the metaphor of 'beating the bounds' – a feudal practice of contesting enclosures – I ask how OSSI defends the commons in intersecting arenas. First is legal, as OSSI negotiates a move from contract law toward moral economy law. Next is epistemic, as a 'freelance' breeder network revitalizes informal farmer-breeder knowledge, proving less structurally constrained than formal university breeders to lead commoning efforts. Third is seed sovereignty, as OSSI engages with global South movements whose diverse cosmovisions and seed cultures pose new challenges for constructing transnational commons. I conclude by using spatial 'centricity' to conceptualize power relations in seed systems. CWR exemplifies 'ex-situ centric' flows of seed knowledge, power, and value away from local communities to centralized, often distant sites of recognizing and classifying diversity. Expertise is conferred primarily upon those scientists and industrialists who can produce commodity goods. By contrast, OSSI mobilizes breeder and farmer knowledge in a countervailing, 'in-situ centric' direction: towards local spaces, towards legitimizing farmer-breeders as knowledge makers. This movement, I conclude, is not merely an opposite force: it triangulates across three bases of 'emancipatory' action at the heart of agroecology, food sovereignty and commoning. Uniting politics of recognition (race, gender, identity), politics of redistribution (class and inequality), and politics of representation (democracy and citizenship), the question of seed diversity and access, I suggest, is ultimately a political one. It calls for recognizing diverse knowledge-makers, redistributing genetic resources as commons, de-centralizing seed reproduction to suit heterogenous agroecologies, and addressing base inequalities in power that drive dispossession.

This thesis is composed of three independent essays studying the role of the schooling and social environment in which individuals make their educational, work or family decisions. The first chapter studies the impact of enrollment at a more selective Parisian high school on students' performance and choice of field of study. We compare students' educational outcomes depending on whether their 9th grade standardized score fell just above or below an admission threshold, and we find that enrollment at a more selective high school has no impact on students' performance but induces female students to turn away from scientific fields and settle for less competitive ones. Our results are consistent with lab-experiment findings on gender differences in attitude towards competition and bad grades. The second chapter analyzes grade repetition in higher education and focuses on the spillover effects induced by grade repeaters on undergraduate freshmen. We distinguish between spillovers effects induced by higher- or lower- achieving repeaters to disentangle class size from composition effects, and we find that grade repetition generates little congestion effects but has important negative composition effects. We show that the performances of freshmen are very sensitive to the number of higher-achieving repeaters while they are not impacted by the number of lower-achieving repeaters. One potential mechanism would be distortion in teaching practices. The last chapter studies the impact of temporary contracts and youth unemployment to explain observed delays in age at first cohabiting relationship and in age at first child. Using French data on the work and family history of large samples of young adults, this chapter provides evidence that access to permanent jobs has a much stronger impact than access to temporary jobs for family formation. According to our estimates, about 25% of the increase in age at first cohabitation and about 40% of the increase in age at first child observed during the second half of the century can be explained by the rise in unemployment and in the share of temporary jobs among young workers. ; Cette thèse se compose de trois essais indépendants dont le dénominateur commun est d'étudier le rôle du contexte institutionnel et de l'environnement social dans lesquels se décident les trajectoires scolaires, professionnelles et familiales. Une moitié environ des lycées parisiens (les plus prestigieux) reçoivent chaque année davantage de demandes d'admission de la part des collégiens qu'ils n'ont de places disponibles. Le logiciel d'affection utilisé (Affelnet) est contraint de définir, pour chacun de ces lycées, un niveau minimum (en termes de note moyenne obtenue en troisième) nécessaire pour l'admission. En comparant les trajectoires des derniers collégiens admis dans des lycées parisiens sélectifs avec celles des premiers recalés, nous montrons dans le premier chapitre que l'accès à un établissement scolaire sélectif n'a aucun impact sur les performances ultérieures au baccalauréat, mais un impact très négatif sur la propension des jeunes lycéennes à s'orienter dans la filière générale scientifique en fin de seconde. Dans le contexte parisien, l'accès à un lycée sélectif s'accompagne surtout d'une amélioration du niveau académique des camarades de classe, notamment en science. Nos résultats concorderaient donc avec les travaux d'économie et psychologie expérimentale suggérant que les filles seraient plus réticentes que les garçons à choisir des voies compétitives. Le deuxième chapitre porte sur les effets des politiques de redoublement en classes préparatoires scientifiques, en distinguant les effets directs observés pour les redoublants eux-mêmes et les effets indirects induits sur les autres élèves au moment de la préparation des concours. Nous montrons que les redoublements ont des effets très largement positifs pour les redoublants eux-mêmes, mais que la présence de nombreux redoublants dans une classe a des effets plutôt négatifs pour les autres élèves, notamment quand ces redoublants sont forts académiquement. Plus une classe compte de redoublants de haut niveau académique (niveau mesuré lors de leur première participation aux concours) plus les nouveaux arrivants sont en difficulté au moment des concours, alors que les performances des nouveaux arrivants sont largement insensibles au nombre de redoublants de niveau moyen ou faible. Les redoublements ne semblent pas influer sur les autres élèves parce qu'ils contribuent à surcharger les classes, mais parce qu'ils en modifient le profil et peuvent induire les enseignants à produire des cours d'un niveau trop ambitieux. Le troisième chapitre s'intéresse aux conséquences pour les trajectoires familiales de l'institutionnalisation des emplois précaires et des difficultés accrues rencontrées par les jeunes adultes pour s'insérer durablement dans l'emploi. Nous y développons une analyse de durée à partir du modèle d'Abbring et van den Berg (2003) et de deux enquêtes rétrospectives sur de larges échantillons de jeunes adultes, et montrons que l'accès à l'emploi stable constitue une étape bien plus décisive que l'accès à un emploi précaire pour la mise en couple et l'arrivée des premiers enfants. Ainsi, entre les générations nées au milieu des années cinquante et celles nées au début des années soixante-dix, la montée de la part des emplois précaires et du chômage des jeunes expliquerait environ 25% des retards observés dans l'âge de mise en couple, et 40% des retards dans l'âge au premier enfant.

The author analyzed the socio-demographic characteristics of the scientific and pedagogical intelligentsia of Ukraine on the eve of World War II. The author revealed the notion of "scientific and educational intelligentsia" and attempted to determine the place of this socio-professional group in the structure of Soviet society in the context of this research. There is analysis of the main factors that influenced the formation of a new social type of the scientific and educational intelligentsia – the "Soviet intelligentsia." in the article.Systems and methods of training scientific and pedagogical staff are paid attention to. The author has revealed the influence of political terror on the development and formation of the Soviet intelligentsia and on the moral and psychological atmosphere in the scientific-pedagogical collectives.The author based on the analysis of archival documents and materials of the All-Union population census in 1926 and 1939 has estimated dynamics of quantitative and qualitative composition of workers of education and science of the Republic in the interwar period.Special attention is given to the consideration of the national and gender characteristics of the intelligentsia, and to its level of education and professional qualities. The author has discovered the interrelation between social and economic experiments of the Soviet government and the number and structure of the scientific and educational intelligentsia in Ukraine during that period.The researcher has concluded that a new social type of scientific and pedagogical worker ("the part of the system") was formed as a result of purposeful policy in the Ukrainian SSR, and the activity of this new social type of scientific and pedagogical worker was completely directed to the interests of the totalitarian state. Characteristic features of the new social type of scientific and pedagogical worker were decrease of professional level, conformism, loss of national identity, departure from moral values to class values. In spite of some positive trends in the development of scientific and educational intelligentsia, social experiments of the Soviet government had lowered isocial status of scientific and educational intelligentsia and changed the structure of it. The policy of the Soviet government was aimed to turn the intelligentsia from the subject into the object of the historical process. ; В статье анализируются социально-демографические характеристики научно-педагогической интеллигенции Украины накануне Второй мировой войны. Автором в контексте даного исследования раскрывается понятие «научно-педагогическая интеллигенция», определяются характерные черты, приобретенные ее представителями в советское время, делается попытка определить место данной социально-профессиональной группы в структуре советского общества.В работе анализируются основные факторы, повлиявшие на формирование нового социального типа научно-педагогической интеллигенции – «советской интелллигенции». Уделяется внимание системе и методам подготовки научно-педагогических кадров, раскрывается влияние политического террора на развитие и становление советской интеллигенции, а также на морально-психологическую атмосферу в научно-педагогических коллективах.На основе анализа архивных документов и материалов Всесоюзных переписей населения 1926 и 1939 гг. дается детальная оценка динамики показателей количественного и качественного состава работников образования и науки республики в межвоенный период. Особое внимание уделяется рассмотрению национальных, гендерных характеристик интеллигенции, а также ее уровня образования и профессиональных качеств. Автором установлена взаимосвязь между социальными и экономическими экспериментами советской власти и изменениями в численности и стуруктуре научно-педагогической интеллигенции Украины.Делается вывод о том, что в межвоенный период вследствии целенаправленной политики в УССР формируется новый социальный тип научно-педагогического работника («винтика системы»), деятельность которого была полностью подчинена интересам тоталитарного государства. Его характерными чертами становятся снижение профессионального уровня, конформизм, потеря национального самосознания, подмена моральных ценностей классовыми. Несмотря на некоторые позитивные тенденции в развитии научно-педагогической интеллигенции, социальные эксперименты советской власти снизили ее социальный статус, изменили состав, были направлены на превращение интеллигенции из субъекта в объект исторического процесса. ; У статті аналізуються соціально-демографічні характеристики науково-педагогічної інтелігенції України напередодні Другої світової війни. Приділено увагу системі і методам підготовки науково-педагогічних кадрів, розкрито вплив політичного терору на розвиток і становлення радянської інтелігенції, а також на морально-психологічну атмосферу в науково- педагогічних колективах.На основі аналізу архівних документів і матеріалів Всесоюзних переписів населення 1926 і 1939 рр. зроблено детальну оцінку динаміки показників кількісного і якісного складу працівників освіти й науки республіки у міжвоєнний період. Особливу увагу приділено розгляду національних, гендерних характеристик інтелігенції, а також її рівня освіти і професійних якостей. Автором встановлено взаємозв'язок між соціальними і економічними ескпериментами радянської влади та змінами у кількості і структурі науково-педагогічної інтелігенції України.Робиться висновок про те, що у міжвоєнний період унаслідок цілеспрямованої політики в УРСР формується новий соціальний тип науково-педагогічного працівника («гвинтика системи»), діяльність якого повністю підпорядкована інтересам тоталітарної держави. Його характерними рисами стає зниження професійного рівня, конформізм, втрата національної самосвідомості, підміна моральних цінностей класовими. Незважаючи на деякі позитивні тенденції у розвитку науково-педагогічної інтелігенції в УРСР, соціальні експерименти радянської влади призвели до зни- ження її соціального статусу, змін в її структурі, були спрямовані на перетворення працівників освіти і науки з суб'єкту в об'єкт історичного процесу.

The Regional History Project at UC Santa Cruz has rich collections of interviews with generations of narrators, ranging across the administration, faculty, and staff. In the early years of the campus, founding director Elizabeth Spedding Calciano conducted two rounds of interviews focused on the student experience at what was then the newest campus of the University of California. Those interviews, conducted in 1967 and 1969 as the campus was still adding a new college every year, give a window into the original UCSC experiment, and into a time of sociocultural transformation as students responded to the Vietnam War and other social justice issues of the time. While the Project's archive includes various individual interviews with students conducted in the intervening years, in 2016 a decision was made by director Irene Reti to launch a follow-up endeavor focused specifically on the student perspective at UCSC today. The ensuing project, Student Interviews: 50 Years Later, consists of fourteen interviews conducted in April and October 2017 in a conference room the McHenry Library. In many ways, it was a very different endeavor from the original Student Interviews. At the beginning of 1967, there were only two colleges at UCSC; in 2017, there were ten, and the student population had boomed exponentially from less than 1,000 to more than 18,000. UCSC has grown into a major research university, offering more than sixty undergraduate majors and dozens of graduate programs across the divisions. In selecting students, there were new challenges of scale, and the challenge of finding a scope of voices that could speak to meaningfully different and diverse experiences on campus became a project in itself. However, while many things have changed at UCSC, this was a venture of continuities as well. Like the original Student Interviews, we accepted from the beginning that it was neither possible nor desirable to strive for a group that could fully represent the student story at UCSC. In addition to that story being far too plural and varied, we know that surprise and singularity are as much an element in oral history work as trends and commonalities. This is a gathering of unique and powerful life histories. That said, we did seek a group that could illustrate distinct points along the range of student experience here. Taking our cue from the '67 and '69 interviews, we contacted the provost of each college for recommendations, compiling a long list that we narrowed down to our final candidates. We also reached out to the directors of the resource centers, EOP, the graduate division, and selected student organizations. As a result, all ten colleges are represented here, as are many resource centers. While the group is mostly undergraduates, we do have graduate students as well. We also made certain that we had majors from all divisions, and strove for an intersectionally diverse and dynamic group, exploring relationships to place and space through the lens of racial and ethnic identity, sexuality, gender, class, and other markers of social difference. For 50 Years Later, this task was baked into our larger exploration of our narrators' academic and extracurricular work at UCSC, as well as their life histories, inspirations, struggles, and aspirations. One notable bias of our selection process is that, since we largely relied on faculty and staff recommendations, we tended to locate students that were exceptionally involved in their residential or academic communities, and were therefore especially visible to their recommenders. There are, of course, many other students who choose different spheres of involvement, or who, especially in the context of a growing research university, may simply not find the same recognition. For those who are struck by the thoughtfulness, eloquence, and importance of the stories included in this compendium, it is our hope that this reading can be the beginning of a greater curiosity and connection with the breadth of the student experience at UCSC. These are voices that need to be heard more widely and more clearly when it comes to the present and future of this campus. An unexpected parallel between the '67 and '69 student interviews and this new '17 project came through the rise of political awareness, activism, and debate at UCSC in the aftermath of the election of Donald Trump. The Sixties interviews took place in the Johnson and Nixon presidencies, a time when many students here were asking pointed questions about the priorities of their school, the Vietnam War, the nature of their education, and the future of justice in their society. These themes return in our 2017 interviews, as students share their life journeys of coming to this campus, their work finding a place here—more than one narrator describes our campus as a "PWI [predominantly white institution]"—and their hopes for how their UCSC education can shape their opportunities and outlook going forward. While some of their stories are particular to certain colleges or majors, many shine a light on deeper issues about this campus, including who is welcome here, how students adapt and make their way in their education, and what debates, dialogues, and differences mark the institution today. These are stories of community, stories of creativity, and stories of critique alike.
