This article evaluates the eaeu through lenses of four salient regional integration theories: neofunctionalism, liberal intergovernmentalism, social constructivism and neorealism, in four corresponding dimensions of integration: economic, politico-institutional, cultural and geostrategic. It concludes that the eaeu is not a useful undertaking for Russia in any of the listed dimensions. The bloc's economic consequences for the smaller states will be harmful. They will experience major production cutbacks and huge adjustment costs because of their undersized firms.

This article calls for a widening of the debate about humanitarian intervention to incorporate insights from constructivism, 'Welsh School'; Critical Security Studies, and critical approaches to Third World International Relations. After identifying a series of problems with the contemporary debate, which is dominated by the English School, it calls for a broadening of the concept of intervention and suggests a need to rethink the meaning of humanitarianism and terms such as the 'supreme humanitarian emergency'.
