The 'constructivistic' approach in the sociology of science by Knorr Cetina intends to show that also in natural scientific laboratories reality is socially constructed. Her ethnographic studies show that data processing in natural sciences resembles interpretation procedures in social and cultural sciences: findings of natural scientific research is produced rather by communicative interaction then by the pure perception of 'brute facts'. Not doubting these results, this article points (among others) at the differentiation between data constructior: by communicative interaction in the daily routine of scientific work and data constitution by 'theoretical' reasoning as it was pointed out - somewhat misleading - by Alfred Schutz.
AN EDUCATION PROFESSIONAL WORRIES THAT THE AMERICAN EDUCATION SYSTEM NO LONGER TRANSMITS DEMOCRATIC VALUES, DOES NOT TEACH STUDENTS HOW THE PAST ILLUMINATES THE PRESENT, AND IS DOMINATED BY CULTURAL RELATIVISM WHICH ESTABLISHES NO VALUES FOR RIGHT OR WRONG AND DESCRIBES THE WORLD AS A TABULA RASA. ONE WAY TO BEGIN TO RESTORE THE PRINCIPLES OF LIBERAL DEMOCRACY TO EDUCATION IS THE TEACHING OF HISTORY.
National audience The article discusses the etio-pathogeny of the conversion process. He returned to the traditional interpretation which made the conversion symptoms a symbolic representative of a rejected conflict, a conflict relating, therefore, to a choice of object whose pushed representation returned to the body. It proposes a different hypothesis, which, moreover, does not necessarily exclude the previous situation: the conversion corresponds to a form of mimetism between the subject and the object of his desire, the symptoms then not being the symbolic representative of an objective-type relationship, but the trace in the body of an identificatory relationship.
The case of Villa San Luis (1971-2017) presents two opposing socio-spatial experiences. On the one hand, the city of popular participation, which through public policies and the direct action of residents sought to respond to a phenomenon of increasing urban marginality. On the other hand, as a result of the coup d'état and the subsequent dictatorship, these actions were cut short. The Villa, at that time known as the "Carlos Cortes" comrade population, was renamed in a process of disqualification with which the dictatorship sought to dissociate and forget that these places were the concretion of an urban imaginary of the left. Villa San Luis was evicted and its population displaced during the military dictatorship. Currently, it has been demolished by 95%, placing one of the most important real estate and business centers in Santiago de Chile, in the Las Condes district. Recently, the Court of Justice of the European Union issued decision C-131/12, which was considered a major breakthrough in Internet data protection. The general public welcomed this decision as an actualization of the controversial "right to be forgotten", which was introduced in the initial draft for a new regulation on data protection and repeatedly amended, due to objections by various Member States and major companies involved in massive processing of personal data. This paper attempts to delve into the content of that decision and examine if it indeed involves the right to be forgotten, if such a right exists at all, and to what extent it can be stated and enforced.
Based on a series of Argentinian novels published between the end of the 20th century and the early years of the 21st century, Julio Ariza writes about abandonment; a detailed study of how privacy and the social crisis, in their unequivocal referrals and matches, is a biopolitics of the invaluable experience. A text whose lucidity and precision calls for the status of 'treaty' on sequelae (traces, scars), which inevitably leaves love after departure. Faced with the temblor of the unsuitable nature, Ariza produces a delicate contrast between unique stories that revolve around a common axis. Thus, in every story, the author (Sergio Chejfec and Alan Pauls, Gabriela Massuh, Juan José Becerra, Daniel Link, Daniel Gustiel, Mariano Siskind, Maria fasce, Oliverio Coelho) brings us to the words that seek to translate the intensities and durations of the imperative apodictic finish. Ranking systems are becoming a fundamental tool in many areas, including the Web environment for ranking pages. PageRank, the most popular method, is based on the links stemming from a page and defined so as to be immune to their inflation, a property called intensity-invariance. This paper introduces and characterizes a new intensity-invariant method, called the handicap-based method. The method assigns not only a ranking to the items but also weights to the experts on which the ranking is based. Ranking and weights form an equilibrium for a relationship based on the notion of handicaps. The method is, in a sense made precise in the paper, the counterpart of the counting method in environments that require intensity-invariance.

The recent Planet of the Apes films can be defined by two questions: one internal to the films themselves, to their own universe, albeit with allegorical dimensions, and the other external, to their status as commodities in the culture industry. The first question is what is the nature of the conflict between humans and apes? Is it a natural conflict, a conflict between two species for domination, or is it a political conflict, a conflict between different ways of living. The second question is will audiences watch and identify with apes, with CGI characters, rather than humans played by human actors.Kingdom of the Planet Apes pushes the second question the furthest while continuing to offer a muddled response to the first question. With respect to the second question it is possible to see each film as moving from human to animal. The first, Rise begins as a story of a scientist trying find a cure for Alzheimers only to eventually become the story of Caesar, the ape leader; the second film, Dawn was as much a story of a human community trying to restore civilization after the plague as it was as an emergent ape society; it is only in the third movie, War that we get a full shift to the apes, with a human colonel emerging only as an antagonist and enemy that we only see in the final act. Each of the previous films had a cast to at least draw in an audience who might not see a movie of CGI apes, with James Franco (unfortunately) playing the scientist in the first film, Gary Oldman and Kerri Russell playing the human survivors in the second, and Woody Harrelson chewing up scenery as the colonel in the third. Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes does have a surprise human star showing up in the third act, but what is striking is how much of the film is about the apes themselves. It is nearly halfway through the film before the first human actor says a line. The shift from human protagonists to apes is now complete. It remains to be seen if audiences with embrace this pop posthumanism, shifting their attention to apes as the central characters. In some sense with CGI the forces of production have gotten ahead of existing social relations: it is possible to make a film with dynamic apes, lizards, and robots, but for the most part screenwriters, even AI assisted ones, insist on giving us stories of the people who care for an contain apes and giant lizards. After a brief scene following the death of Caesar the film begins several generations later in a world apparently entirely dominated by apes. We first meet Noa and his friends, a group of apes belonging to what will be called the eagle clan. They are engaged in an important ritual, stealing eggs of the eagles that they will bond with and use to hunt. The are apes who have mastered fire and the domestication of other animals, but the latter is lived almost as much as symbiotic relation as it is domestication. The use of the term clan here will be significant, in that this first group of apes are presented as more or less in a tribal society, as noble savages. I recent read The Invention of Prehistory: Empire, Violence, and our Obsession with Human Origins by Stefanous Geroulanos. One of the striking things about the book is that he reveals how old and persistent the three stage history of humanity is--the one that divides human history into savages, barbarians, and civilization. It has shifted from being a concept that was supposed to be derived from facts to be reified into a fact itself That is why one sees it appearing again and again, with different savages, barbarians and ideas of civilization. It is a concept that has been rewritten many times, into the stone, bronze, and iron ages in its more materialist variant and animism, religion, and science into its more idealist variation. It has even been updated into third, second, and first worlds in the twentieth century. Thus it is not surprising we find this same schema in the ape films as well.Noa and his clan are eventually besieged by the barbarians, a group of apes, including gorillas, the goons of the film series, who are both searching for humans, and looking for more workers for their grand imperial project. These apes are ruled by Proximus Caesar, an ape who continues the title, but not necessarily the legacy of the original Caesar. The barbarian stage is represented in this film by the ability of the apes to dominate and control other apes. Caesar's soldiers carry elaborate cattle prods that they use to keep others inline. This domination is in service of Caesar's grand plan, an attempt to crack through a giant silo constructed in the last days of humanity. This silo contains all of the technology necessary to solidify Proximus Caesar's rule over the apes, it has guns and tanks. Noa, Mae, RakaWhere does this leave the third term, civilization? In some sense we get it twice. First, as Noa begins his quest to find his clan and liberate them from the barbarians we meet Raka an orangutan. Raka continues the teachings of Caesar, the idea of apes living together, of ape not killing ape, a philosophy which also extends to peaceful coexistence with humans. The logic of the Apes films continues to be one splits into two. Two ape civilizations and two human civilizations in Dawn, with Caesar and Koba representing two futures for the apes, and the two human civilizations being represented by Malcolm (Jason Clarke) who wants to coexist with the apes and Dreyfus (Gary Oldman) who wants to exterminate the brutes. In the third film, War the division was between the apes the sided with Caesar and those that sided with the humans. Now this division continues into the legacy of Caesar himself. Proximus Caesar continues the idea of Caesars power, bringing the slogan "apes together strong" back to the fascist roots suggested by it initial image of sticks bundled together. Raka continues the philosophy of Caesar, even invoking the strange origin story of an ape raised by humans, as an ape who wanted to live with humans. The film seems to suggest that civilization begins not with symbols, "the symbols have meaning" as Raka explains a book to Noa, but when those symbols become contested and interpreted differently.Noa and Raka are soon joined by a human they refer to as Nova. Raka calls all humans "Nova" a nod to the second film and to the original film in the series. It is eventually revealed that Nova is not like the other humans, who live as feral beasts, she can speak and her name is actually Mae. Spoiler Alert: Mae is not an astronaut who crashed landed on this planet as some on the internet have speculated. I must admit that i thought that such an idea would be interesting, especially now that we have spent so much time with apes it would make sense to flip the original story. Tell it not from the perspective of the astronaut who is shocked to find out that it "was Earth all along," but from the apes who would be shocked to learn that humans can talk. The Planet of the Apes films keep remaking and reinventing the earlier prequels and sequels, borrowing elements from Conquest, Battle, and even Beneath, but never quite approaching the original plot of Planet. Mae is part of a group of humans who have survived not only the first round of the simian flu, the genetically created disease that wiped out most of humanity, but its second mutation as well, the disease that has left most of humanity as mute beasts. Noa, Raka, and Mae join up and travel to find Proximis Caesar's Rome by the ocean, a community dedicated to his task of breaching the silo. They travel together but it is not clear if they have the same goals. This brings us to the second question, that of the conflict between ape and humanity. The film shows us that the apes are divided politically as much as they are unified biologically. The apes of Proximus' kingdom and Noa's clan live differently, believe differently, and think differently, even the two followers of Caesar, Raka and Proximus, are sharply divided. We also get a division within humanity, Proximus has his own captive human, Trevathan (William H. Macy), who reads books and collects knowledge for his king. Like the gorillas in War he has aligned himself with what he sees as the dominant species, with his best chance for survival. The war is over and the apes have won. Mae's allegiance with Noa and Raka, we eventually learn, is only temporary and opportunistic, she is part of a community of humans that still is trying to restore their dominance on Earth. That is her real reason for traveling to the silo. Humans and apes are both divided, but differently. The apes are divided between two different social structures, the small tribe of the eagle clan and the kingdom of Proximus, while the humans are divided in terms of how they understand their best chances for survival. If apes and humans can be divided amongst themselves, split between those that live with nature and those that dominate other apes, then their interspecies conflict would suggest that any conflict they would have with humanity would be political as well. Whether or not apes and humans could co-exist would then be a political question, a question of political structure and not natural destiny. The films can never quite commit to this, and return again and again to the idea that conflict between ape and human is a species conflict determined by nature. The tagline of Rise, "Evolution becomes Revolution" already situated all of the films in the place where biological conflict became political conflict. As much as one could fault the films for vacillating between two ideas of conflict, of war--one which presents it as artificial, a product of our social relations, and the other that presents it as natural, part of the very existence of our species--it is worth noting, as Geroulanos argues in his book, that the very some vacillation around the question of war, as natural or artificial, defines much of the history of speculation on the concept. One divides into two is not just for apes. It is worth noting, that in the first film, the original Planet of the Apes, Taylor (Charlton Heston) wonders if humanity still wages war "on his fellow man," and searches for something better out there, some life beyond war and conflict. It is not clear if this is a search for a different species, for some creature not defined by conflict, or a different social order, some utopia.
; The relationship between humans and animals has changed significantly over the last century, especially in Western countries. As a result, social demands for ethically correct treatment of animals have increased considerably. This trend is underlined by intensive discussions presently taking place on the use of animals. Social criticism affects various forms of animal use – for example, livestock farming, animal experiments, animal shows, equestrian sports, and the keeping of companion animals. Such animal-ethical concerns have a considerable effect on the consumption of and purchasing behaviour related to animal products and services (e.g., food, clothing, cosmetics, circuses, and zoos). Therefore, it is of great importance for stakeholders in various sectors (e.g., politics, retail, science, agriculture, sports, and events) to gain a deeper insight into societies' animal-ethical values and the impact of these values on consumer behaviour. In consumer research, the causal relationship between the human value system, consisting of global and domain-specific values as well as attitudes, and behaviour is commonly used for this purpose. Domain-specific values are characterised by two essential advantages. Firstly, they offer a certain prognostic quality, since they are comparatively deeply rooted in the human value system. Secondly, they are generalisable to a certain extent, since they address a specific issue in an abstract and comprehensive way. Thus, domain-specific values are applicable to different questions within the considered thematic complex. However, thus far no attempt has been made to operationalise domain-specific values for the thematic complex of the human-animal relationship. In order to close this research gap, domain-specific values for the human-animal relationship were developed for the first time in the present cumulative dissertation (Study 1). These domain-specific values relate to different convictions on the ethically correct treatment of animals. For this purpose, an interdisciplinary approach combining philosophy (animal ethics) and agricultural marketing (consumer research) was chosen. Since the late 18th century, animal ethics has intensively dealt with the question of what ethically correct treatment of animals should look like. As a result, various animal-ethical positions have been developed in philosophy, ranging from original anthropocentrism (humans may treat animals in any way they see fit) to abolitionism (in principle, humans may not use animals). As part of the operationalisation of domain-specific values, the complex argumentation structures of philosophical positions were reduced to their key ideas. Due to this clear abstraction, the term 'animal-ethical intuitions' is used instead of 'animal-ethical positions' in the context of domain-specific values. By means of confirmatory factor analysis, it was determined that the scales developed for surveying domain-specific values are reliable and valid. The descriptive results provide an overview of the distribution of animal-ethical intuitions in German society. The new contractarian approach receives by far, the greatest approval (75–94%). In accordance with this approach, humans are allowed to use animals in principle, but, in return, humans have to ensure the animals have a good life. By developing domain-specific values, this study provides an essential contribution to the identification of relatively stable and comprehensive drivers within the human-animal relationship. In the second study, the animal-ethical intuitions developed were integrated into the human value system as domain-specific values. The consumption of game meat was used as an example. The hunting and consumption of local game is the subject of controversial discussions, which is why this example was deemed particularly suitable to investigate the impact of different animal-ethical intuitions on behaviour. A structural equation model was used to analyse the causal relationship between global values, domain-specific values (animal-ethical intuitions), attitudes (attitude towards hunting), and behaviour (consumption of game meat). Animal-ethical intuitions can be integrated well into the human value system at the level of domain-specific values. Consumer behaviour is affected, in particular, by the two polarising intuitions of original anthropocentrism and abolitionism. Integrating animal-ethical intuitions at the level of domain-specific values, this study confirms that animal-ethical intuitions are relatively stable drivers in the human-animal relationship. Furthermore, the study contributes to a deeper understanding of the link between animal-ethical intuitions and consumer behaviour. Based on the developed animal-ethical intuitions, consumer segmentation was carried out in the third study. Such segmentation, based on domain-specific values, is relatively stable over time and covers the whole range of the human-animal relationship. Five consumer segments were identified using a three-step cluster analysis. The descriptive analysis of the segments additionally demonstrates a correlation between animal-ethical value profile (totality of all intuitions) and diet. The results reveal that the rejection of relationism (different consideration of animals based on their relationship to humans) is of central importance in the choice of a sustainable diet (flexitarian, vegetarian, or vegan). About a quarter of the German population is characterised by a value profile that, on the one hand, applies animal-welfare-oriented intuitions (e.g., new contractarian approach, animal rights, and abolitionism) and, on the other hand, rejects relationism. This specific combination of domain-specific values correlates with an above-average proportion of flexitarians and vegetarians. In the light of social, political, and scientific discussions about sustainable diet, knowledge of this link is of great interest. Finally, it was examined whether laypeople apply animal-ethical intuitions uniformly to all animals, distinguish between different categories of animals, or decide on a species-specific basis (Study 4). An analysis of variance was used to determine whether the application or rejection of animal-ethical intuitions varies with specific reference to five selected animal species (fish, chickens, cows, horses, and dogs). In terms of intuitions on moral acting, there are only slight differences between the animal species, assuming a transferability of the generally surveyed intuitions – at least to traditional farm and companion animals. In terms of intuitions on the question of death, the differences are much more pronounced. The intuition painless killing of animals is allowed demonstrates this exemplarily. With specific reference to fish, chickens, and cows, this intuition is applied, while, for dogs, it is rather rejected. This differentiation is probably due to the cultural classification of animal species as edible or inedible, as edibility is necessarily linked to killing. Understanding whether or not animal-ethical intuitions are applied uniformly to all animals is of great importance if the insights gained are to be applied to different questions within the thematic complex of the human-animal relationship. Furthermore, it is of great interest to, for example, the agricultural sector whether society applies the same ethical standards to companion animals as to farm animals or whether a differentiation is made. The present dissertation, based on these four studies, contributes to a deeper insight into prevailing animal-ethical values. Thus, stakeholders in various sectors, who are confronted with societal discussions about ethically correct treatment of animals (e.g., politics, retail, science, agriculture, sports, and events), are given the opportunity to align their future decisions with societies' animal-ethical intuitions. ; 2021-03-11
The formation of politology as an important academic discipline at the Law Faculty of the Ivan Franko National University of Lviv is analyzed. Emphasis is placed on the importance of studying politology by law students. Politology is considered as an important social and humanitarian science of politics, its role and functions in the life of society and the state. It is noted that this task can be accomplished by law students to a large extent by mastering the most general laws and features of politics formation, its theory; characteristics of the functions of the political system and state power; functions and nature of the state; essence, forms and methods of activity of subjects of politics and laws of development of political process; analysis of global politics issues, in particular, international relations. It is shown that the formation, development and institutionalization of political science or politology was a long, complex and multifaceted process. The formation and development of politology took place almost simultaneously on different continents. This indicates that the study and dissemination of political science was an urgent social necessity, without which it is impossible to achieve a high level of development of society and the state. In Ukraine, the emergence of political science, in particular about political and state power, the essence, patterns, trends in the functioning and development of politics, its place and role in society first took place at the Lviv University, including the Faculty of Law, established January 20, 1661. The study of political geography, which provided knowledge about the formation and development of the political sphere of society, geographical conditions and features of the political system, domestic and foreign policy of different states, international relations and conflicts, characterized a multifaceted comparison of natural history and human history. The study of political geography was based on the works of the French lawyer and philosopher Jean Bodin. At that time, the graduates of the Faculty of Law («both rights») of the Lviv University realized themselves not only in church and educational activities, but also built political careers as senators and ambassadors to the Grand Sejm, county and zemstvo sejms, held positions of judges of city and zemstvo courts and government officials of the then Commonwealth of Poland.Certain changes in the development of politology took place after the accession of Galicia to the Austrian monarchy. An important role in the training of civil servants (judges, prosecutors, lawyers, notaries) was assigned to the Law Faculty of the Lviv University. During the Austrian period, four departments were established within the Law Faculty of the Lviv University, including the Department of Politology and Austrian Legislation. The curriculum of the Law Faculty of the Lviv University provided for the study of political science in the fourth year, when the study at the faculty was to be completed. The last fourth year of study at the Faculty of Law was final, so the study of politology formed in future lawyers a deep understanding of the essence of political and state activities, the importance of responsible decision-making in the field of relations between different social groups, states and peoples as well as struggle for the acquisition or retention of state power. It was the deep mastery of political knowledge at the Law Faculty of the Lviv University that enabled many law graduates to become deputies («ambassadors») of the Austrian Parliament and the Galician Regional Sejm and worthily represent the interests of the native people in Austria and later Austria-Hungary.The annexation of the western Ukrainian lands to the Ukrainian SSR in 1939 opened a new page in the history of the Lviv University and its Faculty of Law. In 1944, the Department of Theory and History of State and Law was established at the Faculty of Law, which was one of the first to acquaint students with political knowledge at the Faculty of Law during the Soviet period. After 1956, the faculties of law introduced a new scientific and educational discipline – History of Political and Legal Doctrines, which researched and continues to study the history of the emergence and development of theoretical knowledge about politics, state, law, studies the process of human knowledge of politics, state and law at different stages of history in different nations, from early statehood and modernity. This discipline has become a separate subject in university didactics, which was taught at the Faculty of Law at the Department of Theory and History of State and Law, and since 2008 at the Department of History of State, Law and Political and Legal Teachings of the Ivan Franko National University of Lviv.In the early 1990s, there were significant changes in public relations. The economic and political situation in the Soviet Union continued to worsen, the national liberation struggle unfolded in the national regions of the Union. It was at that time that the Department of Politology at the Ivan Franko National University of Lviv was established. This formation took place in a difficult period of our history, due to the totalitarian regime in the former USSR. At that time, political science was ambiguously perceived. However, as early as 1989, some young university professors gave lectures on political science at some faculties. In 1990, the Department of Political Science was established at the University of Lviv as a general university department, since 1996 it has been part of the Faculty of Philosophy of the Ivan Franko National University of Lviv. In 1997, the specialty "politology" was opened at the Faculty of Philosophy and the department became a graduate. The expansion of the department led to its division in 2007 into the Department of Politology and the Department of Theory and History of Political Science. The Department of Political Science taught a course in political science at the Ivan Franko National University of Lviv until 2019.In 2019, by the decision of the Academic Council of the Law Faculty of the Ivan Franko National University of, the course of politology was transferred to the Department of History of State, Law and Political and Legal Teachings of the Law Faculty , which plays an important role in training highly qualified lawyers. This course is taught in the fourth year of full-time and part-time study. The study of politics in politology is interdisciplinary in nature and is reflected in its integration with other disciplines, especially law. In addition to traditional topics for politology, while teaching politology, teachers thoroughly cover the methodology of the history of doctrines about the state and law, political and legal doctrine and thought; regularities of origin and tendencies of development of world theoretical thought about the state and law, the basic political and legal doctrines of the Ancient world, the Middle Ages, New and Modern times; main directions of modern political and legal ideology, basic schools of jurisprudence and political science at the present stage, history of political and legal thought of Ukraine. The study of politology will enrich law students with knowledge about the ways and forms of people's participation in the political life of the state, give an understanding of the types of dynamics of political processes, reveal the content and ways of forming political culture, diversity of modern concepts of social development.
; This thesis deals with the romantic critique of American society during the "golden age of capitalism". Even though, in that historical cycle, the victory in the Second World War and the economic recovery incited fantasies of the end of conflict, social tensions divided the new world leader with increasing force. My main hypothesis is that the romantic sensibility played an important part in the structure acquired by those struggles. To verify this, I analyze how the axes of romantic critique where placed at the heart both of the debates carried by social theorist on the realities of the United States and of literary works of paradigmatic value. In this way, I research the presence of the romantic structure of feeling in a specific moment of American history. In line with cultural Marxism, I examine how the romantic response to historical dilemmas manifests itself in a wide range of discursive genres, from scientific discourse to fiction, from cultural expressions to political declamations. Furthermore, I explore the relevance of the international circulation of ideas for the diffusion of romanticism, inquiring America's cultural tradition as a point of reception and emission of this legacy. From Michael Löwy and Robert Sayre, I draw a definition of romanticism as a countercurrent of capitalist modernity that places its criticism on five main features: 1) disenchantment of the world; 2) quantification of the world; 3) mechanization; 4) rationalist abstraction; 5) dissolution of social bonds. In agreement with the interpretations of Isaiah Berlin and Rüdiger Safranski, cultural Marxism highlights the protean qualities of romanticism, which defy the separation of art, philosophy and politics into different spheres. At the same time, I adopt from these classics the idea that romanticism transcends national barriers. Notwithstanding the disagreements on the origins of this sensibility, all these authors coincide on its international reach, its hold on a wide number of discursive genres, and its transmission from generation to generation. In the first chapter, I show that the dynamics of American society called into question the hypothesis of order presented by Talcott Parsons' sociology. In that context, I examine the emergence of the concept of counterculture as a category of the social sciences, later appropriated by social agents. In the work of Theodore Roszak, I observe how that neologism is linked to the five axes of the romantic critique. Furthermore, I break down how Parsons applied the category in his analysis of an American expressive revolution explicitly attributed to a reappearance of rousseaunian sensibility. The second chapter is dedicated to critical theory. Just like Parsons, the members of the Frankfurt School scrutinized American society in the hope of finding the main trends of the modern world. Their initial diagnosis differed in the deontological dimension, but not on the hypothesis of a growing stability. From a point of view deeply influenced by German Romanticism, Theodor W. Adorno and Herbert Marcuse impugned the totalitarian logic of the culture industry. As years went by, however, unexpected sources of conflict manifested themselves. This chapter of the thesis reviews the different ways in which Adorno and Marcuse utilized romanticism to challenge the United States, and their contrasting responses to the rise of the New Left. In the end, Adorno's coolness is explained by his affinity with the lonely branches of romanticism, while Marcuse's enthusiasm is sympathetic to its communal currents. The ambiguities of romanticism are shown to be at the core of their late estrangement. The third chapter is dedicated to the works of Jack Kerouac. Here, I delve into the relationship between Kerouac and an American tradition that brings together the literary escape motif with the autobiographical register. With that in mind, I trace how Kerouac links romantic motifs to the scorn of conventional society, its norms, rhythms and fundamental affiliations (family, work). Additionally, I stress the mentions to Marxism in Kerouac's novels. In this way, I show similarities and differences between America's rebel scene and Marxist schemes of social conflict, already identified in the social theory of the period. The last section of the thesis investigates the relationship of two Argentinean travelers with American romanticism. Firstly, I examine the books written by Ezequiel Martínez Estrada on the United States, a country he visited in 1942. Knowledgeable about the romantic tradition of that nation, Estrada borrows its concepts and images to express his dislike with the American landscape. The thesis shows how his 'somatic method' resembles the romantic ideal of a subjective science, and compares it with Adorno's philosophy. In the fifth chapter, I consider the trip taken by Osvaldo Baigorria towards hippie communities in the United Sates. For this chapter, I take into consideration Ricardo Piglia's study on the affinity between American romantic literature and the revolutionary tactics of Ernesto Guevara. Through the analysis of the influx that such current had on the vital and intellectual itinerary of Baigorria, I show the tensions between American romanticism and revolutionary schemes stemmed from Marxism.
