Research software has become a central asset in academic research. It optimizes existing and enables new research methods, implements and embeds research knowledge, and constitutes an essential research product in itself. Research software must be sustainable in order to understand, replicate, reproduce, and build upon existing research or conduct new research effectively. In other words, software must be available, discoverable, usable, and adaptable to new needs, both now and in the future. Research software therefore requires an environment that supports sustainability. Hence, a change is needed in the way research software development and maintenance are currently motivated, incentivized, funded, structurally and infrastructurally supported, and legally treated. Failing to do so will threaten the quality and validity of research. In this paper, we identify challenges for research software sustainability in Germany and beyond, in terms of motivation, selection, research software engineering personnel, funding, infrastructure, and legal aspects. Besides researchers, we specifically address political and academic decision-makers to increase awareness of the importance and needs of sustainable research software practices. In particular, we recommend strategies and measures to create an environment for sustainable research software, with the ultimate goal to ensure that software-driven research is valid, reproducible and sustainable, and that software is recognized as a first class citizen in research. In order to predict which ecosystem functions are most at risk from biodiversity loss, meta-analyses have generalised results from biodiversity experiments over different sites and ecosystem types. In contrast, comparing the strength of biodiversity effects across a large number of ecosystem processes measured in a single experiment permits more direct comparisons. Here, we present an analysis of 418 separate measures of 38 ecosystem processes. Overall, 45 % of processes were significantly affected by plant species richness, suggesting that, while diversity affects a large number of processes not all respond to biodiversity. We therefore compared the strength of plant diversity effects between different categories of ecosystem processes, grouping processes according to the year of measurement, their biogeochemical cycle, trophic level and compartment (above- or belowground) and according to whether they were measures of biodiversity or other ecosystem processes, biotic or abiotic and static or dynamic. Overall, and for several individual processes, we found that biodiversity effects became stronger over time. Measures of the carbon cycle were also affected more strongly by plant species richness than were the measures associated with the nitrogen cycle. Further, we found greater plant species richness effects on measures of biodiversity than on other processes. The differential effects of plant diversity on the various types of ecosystem processes indicate that future research and political effort should shift from a general debate about whether biodiversity loss impairs ecosystem functions to focussing on the specific functions of interest and ways to preserve them individually or in combination.

Dieser Schlussbericht präsentiert wissenschaftliche Erkenntnisse über Umsetzung, Inanspruchnahme, Wirkungen und Wirtschaftlichkeit der arbeitsmarktpolitischen Integrationsmaßnahmen für Geflüchtete. Es werden die Fragen beantwortet, wie effektiv und effizient die zentralen Maßnahmen der Arbeitsförderung in den Rechtskreisen SGB II und SGB III für Personen im Kontext von Fluchtmigration im Hinblick auf ihre Arbeitsmarktintegration und soziale Teilhabe sind, und welche Faktoren, wie etwa Sprachförderung und individuelle und lokale Kontextfaktoren, die Maßnahmenwirksamkeit verstärken oder hemmen. Die kausalanalytisch angelegte Auswertung administrativer Daten wird durch die Untersuchung von Befragungsdaten und eine umfassende Implementationsanalyse ergänzt. Aus den empirischen Erkenntnissen abgeleitete Handlungsempfehlungen geben schließlich Impulse, um die Organisation, Prozesse und Rahmenbedingungen der arbeitsmarktpolitischen Integrationsmaßnahmen für Geflüchtete so zu gestalten, dass ihre positiven Wirkungen weiter verstärkt werden können.

Soziologie ist an der Philipps-Universität in den 1960er Jahren als akademisches Studienfach entstanden und ab 1972 ausgebaut worden. Neben den beiden Kernbereichen 'Soziologische Theorien' und 'Methoden empirischer Sozialforschung' konnten Studierende Ende der 1990er Jahre zwischen sechs speziellen Soziologien ihre Schwerpunktsetzung wählen. Nach 30 Jahren Soziologie-Studium in Marburg erschien es sinnvoll, Daten und Informationen über den Verbleib der bisherigen Absolventinnen und Absolventen zusammenzutragen. Dieser Aufgabe stellte sich eine Gruppe von Soziologiestudierenden im Grundstudium (2./3. bzw. 3./4. Fachsemester) zusammen mit ihrem Tutor und ihrer Dozentin im Rahmen eines über zwei Semester laufenden Empirischen Praktikums (Oktober 2003 bis Juli 2004). In Anlehnung an Verbleibs- und Studienabbruchs-Studien anderer Hochschulen wurden Fragestellungen für verschiedene Teiluntersuchungen und Erhebungsinstrumente entwickelt, Interviewtechniken trainiert, Daten erhoben und quantitativ bzw. qualitativ ausgewertet sowie der abschließende Forschungsbericht geschrieben. Die Grundgesamtheit wurde (wegen der schwierigen Adressrecherche) auf die Abschlussjahrgänge 1990 bis 2003 beschränkt. Durchgeführt wurden: eine postalische Fragebogenuntersuchung aller erreichbaren AbsolventInnen (realisiert 88 Befragungen); drei berufsbiografische Interviews mit AbsolventInnenen der Jahre 1991-1996-2001; vier perspektivische Leitfadeninterviews (problemzentriert) mit AbsolventInnen des Jahres 2003; zwei Leitfadeninterviews mit einem Abbrecher bzw. einem Studienfachwechsler; Experteninterviews mit potenziellen ArbeitgebervertreterInnen. Für die Analysen wurden je nach Datenstandard statistische Verfahren, qualitative Inhaltsanalyse oder sequenzielle Analyse eingesetzt. Die Befunde ermöglichen Einschätzungen hinsichtlich der damaligen Diplom- und Magisterstudiengänge in Marburg - hinsichtlich Bachelor- und Master-Studiengängen oder für andere Hochschulen müsste eine Studie entsprechend modifiziert werden.

Fünf Jahre Arbeitsgemeinschaft für wissenschaftliche Forschung in den vielfältigen Bezirken der Naturwissenschaften und Technik, seit einigen Jahren notwendig und wirksam ergänzt durch die Forschung auf geistes­ wissenschaftlichem Gebiet, ist zu einem Begriff für deutsche Forschung und hervorragende Forschungsergebnisse nicht nur in Nordrhein-Westfalen, ihrem Wurzel- und Nährboden, sondern weit darüber hinaus im Bereich unseres gesamten Vaterlandes geworden, sogar mit Ausstrahlungen in die ganze Welt und Resonanz aus der ganzen Welt. Ein Beweis dafür, daß die Insti­ tution, die gar keine Institution im engeren und regelnden Sinne ist und auch nicht sein sollte, sondern ein freiwilliger Zusammenschluß namhafter Wissen­ schaftler und Forscher aus allen Gebieten der wissenschaftlichen Disziplinen, in Plan und Anlage richtig war und sich sinnvoll und zweckdienlich ent­ faltet hat. Was heißt in diesem Falle "zweckdienlich"? Dem Zweck des Austausches, der gegenseitigen Befruchtung von Forschern der verschiedensten Species in Rede und Aussprache dienen, um der Gefahr der Einseitigkeit, der jeder Spezialwissenschaftler ausgesetzt ist, zu begegnen und zu entgehen, um teilzuhaben an den Aufgaben, Erkenntnissen und Ergebnissen des Kollegen der benachbarten, aber und besonders auch der entfernteren wissenschaft­ lichen Bereiche. Die Arbeitsgemeinschaft für Forschung hat in ihren regelmäßigen Sitzun­ gen und durch ihre zahlreichen Veröffentlichungen einen Reichtum aus " ... Wort und Widerwort und wieder Wort ... " wie es auf der Beschriftung des Vogel Phönix von Ewald Mathare in der Vorhalle des Landtags heißt, gewonnen, eine Fülle von Erkenntnissen geschaffen, wie sie in dieser Reich­ weite und Tiefe kaum auf andere Weise zu erzielen sind als in einer solchen wissenschaftlichen "Societät".

Fauna Europaea provides a public web-service with an index of scientific names (including important synonyms) of all extant multicellular European terrestrial and freshwater animals and their geographical distribution at the level of countries and major islands (east of the Urals and excluding the Caucasus region). The Fauna Europaea project comprises about 230,000 taxonomic names, including 130,000 accepted species and 14,000 accepted subspecies, which is much more than the originally projected number of 100,000 species. Fauna Europaea represents a huge effort by more than 400 contributing taxonomic specialists throughout Europe and is a unique (standard) reference suitable for many user communities in science, government, industry, nature conservation and education. The Diptera–Brachycera is one of the 58 Fauna Europaea major taxonomic groups, and data have been compiled by a network of 55 specialists. Within the two-winged insects (Diptera), the Brachycera constitute a monophyletic group, which is generally given rank of suborder. The Brachycera may be classified into the probably paraphyletic 'lower brachyceran grade' and the monophyletic Eremoneura. The latter contains the Empidoidea, the Apystomyioidea with a single Nearctic species, and the Cyclorrhapha, which in turn is divided into the paraphyletic 'aschizan grade' and the monophyletic Schizophora. The latter is traditionally divided into the paraphyletic 'acalyptrate grade' and the monophyletic Calyptratae. Our knowledge of the European fauna of Diptera–Brachycera varies tremendously among families, from the reasonably well known hoverflies (Syrphidae) to the extremely poorly known scuttle flies (Phoridae).
