Reviews the literature on how disorderly behavior arouses feelings of insecurity in the public and tends to lead to increased instances of theft and acts of aggression against persons, before presenting data from surveys conducted in the French cities of Grenoble (1990), Saint-Etienne (1995), and Romans and Paris (1998).
