Abstract

Julian Lindley-French and James Townsend describe the potential path and pitfalls in pursuing an optimal effect for NATO, with one of the main recommendations being clearer focus. Energy competition, proliferation of weapons of mass destruction, global reach terrorism, pandemics, global warming, cyber-defense, critical infrastructure disruption and destruction and, the continuing conflict in Afghanistan all provide the sober backdrop to a series of summits that will take place over the 2008-2010 period.
