Abstract
ARTICLE EXAMINES THE IMAGES OF THE SOVIET UNION FORMED BY FOREIGN SERVICE OFFICERS ASSIGNED TO THE BALKANS OR TO THE STATE DEPARTMENT'S CORRESPONDING GEOGRAPHIC DIVISIONS OF SOUTHERN & EASTERN EUROPE FROM THE END OF 1944 TO WINTER OF 1945-46. IT CONTENDS THAT CAREER OFFICERS WERE PREDISPOSED TO VIEW SOVIET BEHAVIOR AS COOPERATIVE, IN CONFLICT WITH DEPARTMENTAL VIEWS.
