The Importance of Gender in Congressional and Statewide Elections

Abstract

Analysis of 1983 mail questionnaire data from 67 political candidates indicates that gender is an important, but not determinant, variable in congressional & statewide campaigns. Gender-related differences in campaign techniques & strategies were found, although to a lesser degree than expected. Gender-based difficulties in campaign financing seem to be diminishing overall (particularly for F incumbents), but remain a major impediment for F challengers. 3 Tables, 1 Figure, 17 References. HA
