Massenmedien und lokaler Protest: Eine Fallstudie zur Selektivitat von Printmedien
In: Neue soziale Bewegungen: Forschungsjournal, Band 9, Heft 1, S. 91-94
Abstract
Media reporting of protest events in Freiburg, Federal Republic of Germany, 1983-1989 was investigated by comparing a reconstruction of actual protests (based partially on police & previous research data) with local & regional print coverage. Although a higher % of protests & demonstrations were reported in local vs regional papers, a significantly large number of protests received no print coverage whatsoever. Only an extremely small % of protest events were selected by regional papers. Final analysis of media selectivity regarding social movement activities in Freiburg will have to account for methodological complexities (eg, incompleteness of police data, the fact that protests are only one element of movements' repertoires) & the specific characteristics of Freiburg (eg, relatively small size, status as a university city). 7 References.
