Development and the Consumption of Leisure
In: Scandinavian journal of development alternatives and area studies, Band 18, Heft 2-3, S. 229-251
Abstract
In the neoclassical formulation, the categories & meanings of time in different places & in other periods are unproblematic. Because the wage rate determines the price of alternative uses of time, leisure also remains unproblematized. Leisure, when viewed as a derivative of work, holds few problems for neoclassical modeling. In this paper, we have attempted to problematize "leisure" & "consumption" as relatively neglected aspects of development literature, where development should be seen as a historical process in which disparate, not universal, time disciplines coexist, often in a struggle for domination. We see in the Fijian case but one among a number of alternative ways in which commoditization of work & leisure is being played out even as there is greater economic integration of Fiji into the global economy & culture. 4 Tables, 1 Figure, 17 References.
