Racial Differences in Early Marriage in the United States

Abstract

Results from a 1972 follow-up sample of never-married Fs from the 1971 Survey of Young Women (N =3,687 Rs aged 15-19, of whom 1,145 were blacks) indicate racial differences in the effects of the perceived costs & benefits of marrying & heterosexual involvement on early marriage. These differences may result from variations in marital prospects & in educational & career opportunities. 1 Table. Modified HA.
