Abstract

The different forms of financing for innovation are a powerful instrument for the innovation and technological policies of the Spanish Government. The study of the characteristics of the companies that receive support for R&D, allows us to advance in the knowledge of the priorities that the government must have when making R&D policies. Therefore the objective of this study is to analyze the funds that Spanish companies receive for R&D through subsidies and aids, thus revealing the characteristic features that these companies have and up to what point a company depends on public financing to subsist. The sample is taken from the Survey on Technological Innovation of the companies in 2005 (PITEC). A fragmentation of the database into five groups, depending on the size of the company, was carried out showing that this variable significantly influences the type of innovative activities of the company. Then, different types of relationships between the variables associated with the resources that the companies use and the variables that have to do with the type of financing that the companies use, were established. It was observed that the most innovative companies are those with a smaller number of workers (micro and small), except in logistics and support. It was also found in this group of companies, that there is a direct relationship between total Expenditures in innovation, Internal Expenditures in R&D and the origin of the funds for R&D, which in the other groups of companies is not observed.
