Legal framework for gender equality at work in Turkey

Abstract

Achievement of gender-sensitive & gender-balanced legislation is an important step in the continuous struggle against cultural conservatism & sexist prejudice. Each new measure in favour of equality encourages a thoroughgoing change of habits & attitudes. Only with such a progressive legal approach will women be able to play their full part on an equal footing with men. To achieve this end, the primary strategy is the definition & putting into practice of the principle of equal rights & opportunities for both sexes. This means legal definition & gradual social implementation -- in the family, at work, in political & civic rights & in social & cultural life. The Turkish law that guarantees formal equality between men & women contains the essential points for achieving egalitarian treatment of women. The framework of legislation requiring equal treatment between men and women consists of constitutional provisions, as well as provisions of ratified international instruments.
