Abstract
The goals of the 1st Peronist regime were to overcome dependence on other nations within a capitalist framework, while simultaneously engaging in social reform & income redistribution. The overthrow of that regime led to replacement of its policy of developing labor-intensive industries by heavy reliance on imported technology controlled by the landed bourgeoisie. This led to the introduction of multinational corporations. Their activities produced mass protest which precipitated a militaristic takeover. This led to an alliance between workers, students, & disaffected sectors of the Mc. The activities of Peronist armed movements, general strikes, & liberal opposition weakened the Ongania regime & led to a military coup. Elections, through which the military government sought legitimacy, led to the return of Peron. Peronism's overall role can be seen as a compromise between the masses' desire for change & the establishment's desire to hold off revolution, by its serving an essentially reformist role. W. H. Stoddard.
