This article has a twofold aim: (1) It describes briefly the main directions & controversies of the debate on the European city by Europeans, which gradually ended in the 1960s. (2) It presents the major peculiarities of the 20th-century European city, the visibility of European history in the city, specific urban growth, the European division between urban & rural culture, European urban inequalities, European use of urban culture, the European debate about city planning, & European urban planning policies.
