"Seattle on the Tarn": French Solidarity against Capitalist Globalization
In: New politics: a journal of socialist thought, Band 8, Heft 2, S. 111-118
Abstract
(Part of a symposium on "Left Responses to Globalization," precipitated by a call in a previous journal symposium [2000] for positive alternatives to contemporary realpolitik globalization.) Presents a case study of "Seattle on the Tarn," describing the day (30 June 2000) when local organizers in southern France marched to support sheep farmers (including Jose Bove, who had participated in demonstrations against the World Trade Organization in Seattle, WA) accused of destroying a McDonald's restaurant. Other examples of such local protests against capitalist globalization are cited, & all located within strong local traditions of organizing. The climate of class solidarity from which such movements arise is described, & implications for similar efforts are discussed using the notion of a "culture of resistance.". K. Hyatt Stewart
