Challenges to Transnational Social Movements
In: Peace review: the international quarterly of world peace, Band 6, Heft 4, S. 395-401
Abstract
Identifies the common characteristics & challenges in transnational social movement organizations (TSMDs). Despite variations in objectives & organizational styles, TSMOs share: (1) goals that focus on values, lifestyles, identities, personal autonomy, & self-realization; (2) organization structures that are nonhierarchical, decentralized, & participatory; & (3) an emphasis on postmaterialist values & a more socially diffuse support base. Challenges that these movements must face include globalization & the lack of cross-cultural skills crucial to transnational mobilization; nationalism, which must be combined with global objectives; membership continuity & the need for more formal organizational structures; isolation from conventional politics; & harsh attitudes toward the Third World.
