This book explores the development of the bioeconomy across the world from an economic and policy perspective, as well as identifying potential future pathways and issues. It uses a broad definition, covering all sectors using biological resources except health. The book's chapters can be broadly grouped into four main parts. The first part (chapters 2-3) illustrates the current definitions, strategies, policy and economic information related to the bioeconomy. The second part (chapters 4-8) describes the current economic analysis and research effort in qualifying and understanding the economics of the bioeconomy. This part covers supply-side and demand-side issues, the role of markets and public policy in matching demand and supply, and the political economy of the bioeconomy. The third part (chapters 9-11) delves into more detail in a number of issues that are complementary and that help deepen the economic analysis, including how the bioeconomy can contribute to global sustainability objectives. The fourth part (chapter 12) concludes with some general outlooks and perspective views on the future of the bioeconomy.
