Abstract

According to the author, the 14th (Chinese Communist) Party Congress heralded a victory for Deng Xiaoping's programme of rapid economic transformation accompanied by tight political control. He (the author) analyses General Secretary of the CCP Jiang Zemin's Work Report to the Party Congress, key personnel changes within the CCP and offers some comments on the nature of the political challenges facing the new CCP leadership.
