Abstract
Several conditions contributed to bring about the 1964 coup against Goulart. Deteriorating economic conditions, with high inflation coupled with stagnation, alienated large sectors of the population, including the middle class, businessmen, and the military. Many considered Goulart's presidency illegitimate but did not question the regime itself. When it became clear after Goulart's removal that the military would install a dictatorship, many who had supported the ouster of Goulart turned against the military
