Abstract
The essay explores the general state of Japanese-Soviet relations, especially under Mikhail Gorbachev, the economic incentives and disincentives both countries perceive in closer economic co-operation aimed at developing Siberia and the Soviet Far East and the role which relations with China have played in their overall relations.
