Abstract
Urbanization experience of Tamilnadu is explained through the working of its different regional economies. Traditional rural market systems which form an important indigenous element of the state's regional space economies serve as a key variable. Spatial, functional and social deficiencies of the urban system are highlighted. It is argued that such "grass-root" elements of the space economy may have a potential for urban systems development "from below". (Economische Voorlichtingsdienst)
