The Far East Soviet Laborers in the Early 1920s: Social Status and Political Aspirations
This article, based on exclusive archives and the results of current research by leading Russian historians, examines the state of the Far East labor class post Civil War and military intervention. We pay special attention to the causes of complex political, economic, and social status of the Far Eastern region. We conclude that acute economic hardship of the Far Eastern workers, combined with the rise of political tension, compelled the Soviet leadership to promote a an accelerated economic development policy for the region.
