Rejón de Silva y el discurso ilustrado sobre la escuela de pintura española

Abstract

This article studies the attempts by the academic and politician Diego Rejon de Silva to define and maintain the existence of a Spanish School of painting in his book La Pintura (1786). His words are essential to analyse how the concept of Spanish School that remains to these days was first established, as well as providing a useful source to study the development of the discourse on its excellence in the context of the ideas in the Age of Enlightenment. La Pintura provides valuable material to understand how nationalistic values in painting were approached and defined, at a time of abundant eulogistic texts on Hispanic culture. Its publication shows an effort to generate and promote a feeling of national pride within the realm of painting, and reveals the connections between Art and power. ; En este trabajo, se estudian las tentativas de definición y defensa de la escuela de pintura española acometidas por el académico y político Diego Rejón de Silva en su libro La Pintura (1786). Sus palabras son un testimonio esencial paraanalizar cómo se configuró el concepto de escuela que ha persistido y constituyen una fuente útil para abordar el proceso de construcción del discurso sobre la excelencia pictórica hispánica en el contexto del ideario ilustrado. La Pintura aporta un valioso material para indagar sobre cómo se trataron y puntualizaron los valores nacionalistas en el arte, en una etapa en la que proliferaron los textos apologéticos sobre lo hispánico. Su publicación evidencia las acciones realizadas para difundir y generar un sentimiento de orgullo patrio en el ámbito pictórico, evidenciando las conexiones entre arte y poder.
