Abstract

A study of the critiques of the National Exhibitions of Fine Arts held after the Revolution of 1868 provides us with useful knowledge of the evolution of artistic creation and reception in the political and social situation of the time in Spain. The Catholic press, which was extremely conservative, showed itself unable to assimilate the Church's loss of influence. Consequently, it launched a series of bitter attacks on realist art, using moral and pedagogical arguments, and on the changes in genres which bourgeois taste was promoting. The present article analyses the reactions in the Catholic press to the National Exhibitions held between 1871 and 1878. ; Las críticas a las Exposiciones Nacionales de Bellas Artes posteriores a la Revolución de 1868 constituyen un excelente campo para conocer la evolución de la creación y la recepción artística y la situación socio política española. La prensa católica, extremadamente conservadora, se mostrará incapaz de asumir la pérdida de poder de la Iglesia y aferrada a argumentos morales y pedagógicos realizará una ácida censura al arte realista y a la modificación de la jerarquía de los géneros que está imponiendo el gusto burgués. Este artículo estudia las críticas en prensa católica a las Exposiciones Nacionales desde 1871 a 1878.
